INVERSE
TRIGONOMETRIC
FUNCTIONS
Prepared by:

Faculty, Calculus/Data Analytics/Statistics
OUTCOMES
CO2: Develop solutions and illustrations for some
problems involving circular functions, trigonometric
identities, inverse trigonometric functions, and polar
coordinate system with an aid of computer applications.

LO4.1: Determine the exact values, graphs, and other

characteristics of the six inverse trigonometric functions.

LO4.2: Convert the coordinates of a point from

rectangular to polar systems and vice versa.

LO4.3: Solve situational problems involving inverse

trigonometric functions and polar coordinate system.
RECALL
• The three main functions in trigonometry, which
relate an angle of a right-angled triangle to the ratios
of two sides length, are:
o Sine Function:
sin(θ) = Opposite ÷ Hypotenuse (SOH)
o Cosine Function:
cos(θ) = Adjacent ÷ Hypotenuse (CAH)
o Tangent Function:
tan(θ) = Opposite ÷ Adjacent (TOA)
• For a given angle θ each ratio stays the same no
matter how big or small the triangle is
RECALL
• We can also divide "the other way around" (such as
Adjacent/Opposite instead of Opposite/Adjacent):
o Cosecant Function:
csc(θ) = Hypotenuse ÷ Opposite (CHO)
o Secant Function:
sec(θ) = Hypotenuse ÷ Adjacent (SHA)
o Cotangent Function:
cot(θ) = Adjacent ÷ Opposite (CAO)
• Example: When Opposite = 2 and Hypotenuse = 4 then
sin(θ) = 2/4 and csc(θ) = 4/2
RECALL

• Reciprocal Identities: • Tangent Identities:

1 1 sin(θ)
o sin(θ) = o csc(θ) = o tan(θ) =
csc(θ) sin(θ) cos(θ)
1 1
o cos(θ) = o sec(θ) = cos(θ)
sec(θ) cos(θ) o cot(θ) =
1 1 sin(θ)
o tan(θ) = o cot(θ) =
cot(θ) tan(θ)
RECALL
• Pythagorean Identities: • Derivations:
o sin 2 θ + cos 2 θ = 1 o sin 2 θ = 1 − cos 2 θ o tan 2 θ = sec 2 θ − 1
o sec 2 θ =1 + tan 2 θ o cos 2 θ = 1 − sin 2 θ o cot 2 θ = csc 2 θ −1
o csc 2 θ =1 + cot 2 θ o sin θ = 1 − cos 2 θ o tan θ = sec 2 θ − 1
o cos θ = 1 − sin 2 θ o cotθ = csc 2 θ − 1
RECALL
INVERSE TRIGONOMETRIC FUNCTIONS

• Reciprocal Identities: • Tangent Identities:

1 1 sin(θ)
o sin(θ) = o csc(θ) = o tan(θ) =
csc(θ) sin(θ) cos(θ)
1 1
o cos(θ) = o sec(θ) = cos(θ)
sec(θ) cos(θ) o cot(θ) =
1 1 sin(θ)
o tan(θ) = o cot(θ) =
cot(θ) tan(θ)
INVERSE TRIGONOMETRIC FUNCTIONS
• Inverse Trigonometric Functions are the inverse functions of the basic trigonometric functions
which are sine, cosine, tangent, cotangent, secant, and cosecant functions.
• They are also termed as arcus functions, antitrigonometric functions or cyclometric functions.

Example:

Find the exact values of each of the following:

1. sin-1 1

2. sec (arc sin 1/2)

3. cos (arc sin 1/2)

4. sin (arc cos 3/2)

TRIGONOMETRIC EQUATIONS

Trigonometric Equation
• is an equation involving one or more
trigonometric ratios of unknown angles.
• It is expressed as ratios of sine(sin),
cosine(cos), tangent(tan),
cotangent(cot), secant(sec),
cosecant(cosec) angles.
• For example, cos2 x + 5sin x = 0 is a
trigonometric equation.
TRIGONOMETRIC EQUATIONS

Example:

1. Find all the solutions of the 2sin2x - 3sinx+1 = 0 in

the interval [0,2𝜋)

2. Solve the equation cos x + sin x = 1 in the the

interval [0,2𝜋)
APPLICATIONS OF INVERSE TRIG FUNCTIONS
AND TRIGONOMETRIC EQUATIONS

Problem 1

A tower, 28.4 feet high, must be secured with a

guy wire anchored 5 feet from the base of the
tower. What angle will the guy wire make with
the ground?
APPLICATIONS OF INVERSE TRIG FUNCTIONS
AND TRIGONOMETRIC EQUATIONS
Problem 2
The acceleration of a piston is given by
𝒂 = 𝟓. 𝟎 𝒔𝒊𝒏𝝎𝒕 + 𝒄𝒐𝒔𝟐𝝎𝒕 , Where: 𝜔𝑡
is the crank angle (angular velocity ×
time). At what positive values of 𝜔𝑡 less
than 2𝜋 does 𝑎 = 0?
