Workshops Softwares
INTRODUCTION: The modern time with automation and digitalization all over the world has brought us many
technological gifts, amongst which the modernization of designing, planning, monitoring and management of
industry-standard petroleum production, processing, storage and delivery. As one of the largest global industries,
this field has seen the vast and swift development which assists not only risk management but also efficiency, made
possible by the migration into software-based workflow. Our goal is to take a sneak-peek into some of the most
commonly used Petroleum and Mining related softwares and to get a basic level of familiarity with them.
LIST OF SOFTWARES: As 21st century petroleum engineers, where gigantic machinery and enormous
mechanical infrastructure exists to continuously aid the industry, soft-skills are a must-learn to understand, operate
and maintain these infrastructures as well as to attain, record, process & summarize the huge amount of data that are
regularly dealt with in the industry.

SCHLUMBURGER PETREL, ECLIPSE & TECHLOG : The Petrel offers a variety of available workflow
including 3D modelling and simulation of reservoirs, analysis and interpretation of reservoir data, identifying and
categorizing sub-surface anomalies and deformities etc.
The integration of petrel with eclipse, TechLog and many other widely used application in form of plug-in function
by the parent company Schlumberger allow us to use both software in one installation, enchancing the availability
and efficiency of learning.
The Petrel and other Schlumberger softwares are paid and latest model uses online licencing system to prevent
piracy. However, an older version of the application and environment system (Petrel 2017) can be installed.
SUMMARIZATION: Although almost all the application mentioned above offers tempting functionality and can
boast a major point in a petroleum engineers’ CV, but not all the application are available to us and even the
available applications have some steep learning curve. Hence, my proposal is to focus on one programme at a time,
and as time and learning increases, we can expand and enhance our resources to focus on more soft-skills. As for
now, the SLB Petrel offers the most functionality, has most usability and is available at hand, which makes it a clear
choice for the primary software training programme. In-depth info on installation, learning and operating this
application, Sazid Bin Alam vi from 18th batch may be contacted.
