1. Purpose
This procedure provides how to handling and processing urgent or stat samples those that are
needed immediately in order to manage medical emergencies
2. Scope
This procedure applies to APHIDBL during the management of urgent specimens.
3. Responsibility:
It is the responsibility of all APHIDBL personnel to ensure effective implementation and
maintenance of this procedure.

5. Definition:
Urgent Specimen: is a specimen in which the laboratory personnel need to treat in a prioritized way
separately from the routinely requested specimens.
6. Activity description:
Urgent Specimen
1. Check completeness of the required patient information by cross checking with the requisition
paper or equivalent electronic and it must match with the specimen identification.
2. The type or urgency of specimen must be clearly identified and labelled “URGENT “on the
request paper.
3. Check all the information so as to accept or reject the sample & record on the sample
receiving log or rejection log appropriately

4. Process the sample and the results should be reported as soon as possible and telephoned
to the requestor as required followed by hard copy.
5. Reported results should be recorded panic or critical record format.
Note: In keeping the urgent nature of the request it is the clinician’s responsibility to provide
contact information to the laboratory so that the laboratory can report urgent results to the
clinician in timely manner.
