Question no.1 Difficulty level Answers

Determine stresses in each element of a pin connected truss Easy σAC = 159MPa
σBC = 15.3MPa
as shown in Figure 1. The element AC has a diameter of
20mm and BC has 50mm. (P = 30kN, LAB = 600mm, LBC =
800mm)

Question no. 2 Difficulty level Answer

A short post constructed from a hollow circular tube of Easy 192 MPa

aluminium supports a compressive load of 250kN. The inner

and outer diameter of the tube are 90mm and 130mm
respectively. Determine the compressive stress.

Question no. 3 Difficulty level Answers

A solid circular post ABC (see Figure 2) supports a load P1 = Tough a) 1415.43 psi
b) 4800 lbs
1600 lb acting at the top. A second load P2 is uniformly
distributed around the shelf at B. The diameters of the upper
and lower parts of the post are dAB = 1.2 in. and dBC = 2.4 in.,
respectively.
(a) Calculate the normal stress in the upper part of the post.
(b) If it is desired that the lower part of the post have

1 of 4
the same compressive stress as the upper part, what should
be the magnitude of the load P2?

Question no. 4 Difficulty level Answer

Calculate the compressive stress in the circular piston rod Tough 11.2 MPa

(see Figure 3) when a force P = 40 N is applied to the brake

pedal. Assume that the line of action of the force P is parallel
to the piston rod, which has diameter 5 mm. Also, the other
dimensions shown in the figure (50 mm and 225 mm) are
measured perpendicular to the line of action of the force P.

Question no. 5 Difficulty level Answer

A high strength steel rod having modulus of elasticity and Tough 654kN

Poisson’s ratio of 200GPa and 0.3 respectively is compresses

by an axial force P. Before the load was applied the diameter
of the rod was 50mm. In order to provide certain clearances,
the diameter of the rod must not exceed 50.025mm under
load. Find out the value of load P?

Question no. 6 Difficulty level Answer

A prismatic bar of circular cross section is loaded by tensile Tough 0.023mm

forces of 120kN. The Almunium bar has a length of 3m,

diameter of 30mm, modulus of elasticity and Poisson’s ratio
of 73GPa and 1/3 respectively. Calculate the decrease in the
diameter.

Question no. 7 Difficulty level Answers

An angle bracket having thickness t = 18mm. is attached to Challenging a) 48.6 MPa

b) 69.66 MPa
the flange of a column by two 16mm diameter bolts (see
Figure 4). A uniformly distributed load acts on the top face
of the bracket with a pressure p = 2MPa. The top face of the

2 of 4
bracket has length L = 200mm and width b = 70mm.
Determine the average bearing pressure between the angle
bracket and the bolts and the average shear stress in the bolts.
(Disregard friction between the bracket and the column.)

Question no. 8 Difficulty level Answers

Three steel plates, each 20 mm thick, are joined by two 15 Challenging a) 117 MPa
b) 148 kPa
mm diameter rivets as shown in the Figure 5.
(a) If the load P = 70 kN, what is the largest bearing stress
acting on the rivets?
(b) If the ultimate shear stress for the rivets is 210 MPa, what
force Pult is required to cause the rivets to fail in shear?
(Disregard friction between the plates.)

Question no. 9 Difficulty level Answers

A rod of 10ft length, having cross sectional area of 5in2 and Challenging 0.0083ft

modulus of Elasticity of 29000ksi has been placed inside a

tube of the same length but different cross sectional area and
modulus of Elasticity of 8in2 and 50000ksi respectively.
What is the deformation in the rod and tube when an axial
compressive force of 100lbs is exerted at its both ends.

Question no. 10 Difficulty level Answers

The rails of a railroad track are welded together at their ends Challenging 53.6 MPa

(to form continuous rails and thus eliminate the clacking

sound of the wheels) when the temperature is 60° F. What
compressive stress is produced in the rails when they are
heated by the sun to 120° F if the coefficient of thermal
expansion is 6.5 x 10-6 /° F and the modulus of elasticity E =
