TOPICS IN CHEMISTRY
FINAL TERM EXAMINATION
A.Y. 2022-2023(2nd Semester)

Name____________________ Course & Yr._________________

I. Solve the problems with complete solutions.

1. Octane is a chemical substance that exists in petrol or gasoline and that is used to measure the quality
of the fuel. The heat given off by the combustion of 1 mole octane (C8H18) is -273 kJ from the perspective
of the surroundings.

A. Write a balanced thermochemical equation for the combustion of 1 mole of octane.

B. Calculate the amount of heat evolved when 4.75 g of octane is burned.

2. A 360.0-g piece of steel rod used for reinforcing concrete is dropped into 425 mL of water at 24.0 °C.
The final temperature of the water was measured as 42.7 °C. Calculate the initial temperature of the piece
of the steel. Assume the specific heat of steel is approximately the same as that for iron (450 J/kg°C), and
that all heat transfer occurs between the steel and the water (there is no heat exchange with the
surroundings).

3. A 0.500 g sample of naphthalene (C10H8) is burned in a bomb calorimeter containing 650 grams of water
at an initial temperature of 20.00ºC. After the reaction, the final temperature of the water is 26.4ºC. The
heat capacity of the calorimeter is 420 J/ºC. Using these data, calculate the heat of combustion of
naphthalene in kJ/mol.

For numbers 4 and 5, consider the chemical equation below:

4.Using the values of bond dissociation energies, calculate the heat of reaction and determine whether it
is an exothermic or endothermic process.
5.Using the values of standard enthalpy of formation, calculate the heat of reaction.

II. Answer the questions comprehensively.

Given the chemical structure of cholesterol, answer items 1 and 2.

1. Give the molecular formula of the compound.

2. How many sigma bonds and pi bonds are there in the chemical structure given? Identify the sigma and
pi bonds using the symbols σ and ∏ respectively.

3. Propanoic acid, also known as propionic acid is a compound used as a preservative, fungicide, and
antimicrobial agent.

A. Draw the expanded structural formula

B. Determine the hybridization state of each carbon and heteroatom (any atom except C and H) in the
drawn structure.

4. Draw and give the IUPAC name of all the structural isomers with the molecular formula C6H14.
(Right minus wrong)

5. Write the structural formula of each of these type of compounds containing 4 carbon atoms. Name
the compounds formed using the IUPAC system of naming organic compounds.
A. Halocarbon
B. Ketone
C. Ester
D. Amide
E. Ether
