Prayer (Students will pray)

Greetings everyone! Kindly stand up and let us pray.

Greetings Good morning Sir!

Good morning my dear grade 3 students!

Classroom Management

Now, what should we do when we have classes inside the classroom?

1. Sit properly
2. Be positive and be happy
3. Be respectful to your classmates and to your teacher
4. Be cooperative when we have activities

Do you understand? Yes, Sir!

B. Motivation

Before we begin with our new lesson for today, we are going to
play a game. I will show you a pictures of numbers and then Yes Sir!
you will tell what numbers is being present in the pictures. (Everyone in the class’s

Is it clear? participating)

How many girls are here in the classroom?

How many boys are here in the classroom?
What is the total of all students here in the classroom?

C. Proper lesson / Presentation

Did you know that Rizal Park in Manila originally covered 58 hectares?
Recently, an additional 8 hectares of open space and gardens were
added to the park, making its total area now 66 hectares. This makes
Rizal Park one of the largest urban parks in Asia, where people can
enjoy even more space for recreation and relaxation!

In addition sentence 58+8=66, 58 and 8 are called addends while 66 is

called the sum. Addends are the numbers being added while the sum is
the result in addition.

Addition is the process of putting two or more numbers or things

together. For instance, let us illustrate the following:
5 apples added by 3 apples, the total will be 8 apples.

To find the total number of apples, we can simply count them from left
to right. The addition sentence would be 5 + 4 + 8.

Lets also consider the block model as illustration for this addition.

5 3

Let’s now proceed in the Properties of Addition

1. Commutative Property of Addition (CPA)
You learned earlier that 5 + 3 = 8. What would be the answer of we
change the order of the addends into 3+5?

3 5

8
It shows that 5+3 = 3+5 =8. This is called Communicative Property of
Addition - the order of the addends does not affect the sum.

2. Associative Property of Addition (APA)

Another property of addition is associative property. It says that
changing the group of the addends does not affect the sum. For
example, the sum of (6+7)+2 is equal to the sum of 6+(7+2).

(6+7)+2 = 6+(7+2)
13+2 = 6+9
15 = 15

3. Identity Property of Addition (IPA)

The Identity Property states that the sum of a number and zero is the
same number.
Examples:
9+0=9 0+35=35 1+0=1

Adding two to three-digit numbers

To add two to three-digit numbers, follow the steps below.
Step 1: Arrange the numbers in column so that the digit of the same
place value are aligned. For example, let’s find the sum of 78 and 151.

Hundreds Tens Ones

Place Place Place
7 8
+ 1 5 1

Step 2: Add the digits in ones place, tens place, then hundreds place.

Hundreds Tens Ones

Place Place Place
7 8
+ 1 5 1

In the tens place, since 7 tens plus 4 tens total 11 tens, then rename 11
tens as 1 hundred and 2 tens; write the 2 tens in the tens digit of the
sum and regroup the 1 hundred with the hundreds digit of the addends,
then add.
Hundreds Tens Ones
Place Place Place
1
7 8
+ 1 5 1

2 2 9

The sum of 78 and 151 is 229.

Are we all clear?

Great!
Do you have any clarification with this?
If none, lets now proceed to our activity.

2.

+ 4 2

3.
3 8

+ 2 3 9

E. Generalization

Did you learn a lot in our lesson? Very good! So our topic again is
about addition of whole numbers.
- Addition is the process of putting together two or more numbers.
- The numbers being added are called addends while the answer is
called sum or total.
4. -Commutative Property of Addition (CPA) is the order of the
addends does not affect the sum. Associative Property of Addition
(APA) states that changing the grouping of the addends does not affect
the sum, while the Identity Property of Addition (IPA) says that when
zero is added to a number, the sum is the number.

IV. Evaluation

Direction: Get the sum of the following addends.

1.
1 6 2
+ 2 3 9
