Aims & Objectives
About
English Language is one of the four important subjects of the WAEC examinations
and without a pass in it, you cannot gain admission in any university in Nigeria.
This exam will test your writing skills, your ability to use correct English and punctu-
ate properly.
You will also be asked questions based on a comprehension passage where you may
be asked the grammatical functions of some words.
You must study both your syllabus and past questions because you will learn a lot
about the exams.
Papers 1, 2 and 3, all of which must be taken. Papers 1 and 2 will be a composite pa-
per to be taken at one sitting.
PAPER 1 (For candidates in The Gambia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone and Liberia only): Will
consist of eighty multiple choice questions; forty lexical and forty structural ques-
tions. Each question will have four options lettered A to D and should be answered
within 1 hour for 40 marks.
PAPER 2 (For all candidates): Will consist of five essay topics and a passage each to
test candidates’ comprehension and summary skills. Candidates will be expected to
write an essay on one of the topics and answer all the questions on the comprehen-
sion and summary passages. The paper will last 2 hours and carry 100 marks
PAPER 3: Will consist of sixty multiple-choice items on the Test of Orals for candi-
dates in Nigeria and Liberia, and the Listening Comprehension Test for candidates in
the Gambia and Sierra Leone. All the questions should be answered in 45 minutes
for 30 marks.

WAEC Grading System
Having a good grade is very important in every exam especially one like WAEC which
will determine your admission status in higher institutions. Below is a table showing
how WAEC grades you depending on your score
75-100 A1 Excellent
65-69 B3 Good
60-64 C4 Credit
55-59 C5 Credit
50-54 C6 Credit
45-49 D7 Pass
40-44 E8 Pass

It is very important to score at least 50% which will give you a C6 in the 4 compul-
sory subjects as well as your core subjects or you could have problems getting admis-
sion and may have to re-write the exams.
For example, if you want to study Medicine and Surgery, you should try hard to score
high in Mathematics, English, Civic Education, and the trade subject you are writing
and your core subjects which are: Physics, Biology, and Chemistry
