TRIP UNIT

in
CIRCUIT BREAKER

Eng. Ahmed Osama Abdel_Hak

Trip Unit of the CB

 In the MCB the trip unit is inside the circuit breaker

There are two types of trip unit :
1. Fixed type ( thermal magnetic )
2. Adjustable type ( thermal magnetic - electronic )
 Trip unit is adjust from 0.4 to 1 from rating of CB for electronic trip unit, but in
thermal trip unit from 0.7 to 1 In
 Thermal magnetic in MCB and MCCB
 Electronic in MCCB and ACB
 In the MCB the thermal magnetic trip unit is fixed only, in the MCCB the thermal
magnetic may be fixed or adjustable, the electronic trip unit is always adjustable
and it always used in the the ACB and in the MCCB.
The Adjustable Trip Unit ( Electronic Type )
In the adjustable trip unit there are values for current and time depending on the trip
unit types [ LI - LSI - LSIG ] :
1. In : rated value of the trip unit
2. Ir : the current setting of the long time delay (thermal )
3. Im=Isd : the current setting of the short time delay (magnetic)
4. Ii: the current setting of the instantaneous tripping
5. Tr: the time setting of the long time delay
6. Tsd : the time setting of the short time delay
 Can operate with ac only because it depends on sensing the current by CT or
sensor

The Adjustable Trip Unit ( Thermal- Magnetic Type )

1. In : rated value of the trip unit
2. Ir : the current setting of the long time delay (thermal )
3. Im=Isd : the current setting of the short time delay (magnetic)

 Can operate with dc or ac current because it depends on

the thermal an magnetic effect of the current
 In equal Ir in case of fixed trip unit as MCB
 The values of the current setting change the curve horizontally, and the time
setting change the curve vertically

 In schneider TMD may be variable in thermal and magnetic as CVZ630N

When adjustable trip unit must be used ?
1. If there are future loads
So the trip unit (in) will selected depending on the future load, but the Ir will be
selected depending on the current load
2. Selectivity Study
3. In case the second rating of the CB is much larger than the load current you may
make a setting of the Ir depending on the load current, then design the cable
depending on the Ir. Still, you must make sure that the setting of the CB can’t be
changed from anyone expect the specialist.
Micro Logic in Schneider
X: type of protection :
1- 2: LI
2- 5: LSI
3- 6:LSI+earth fault protection
4- 7:LSI+earth leakage

Y: Generation degree ( related to supplier )

Z: Measurement

A- Ammeter
A- Energy [ A+V +PF+P+E]
P- Power [ V+A+P+VAR+VA+WH+VARH]
H- Harmonics [ all the P + Harmonics] for ACB only
 In Oil & Gas Application, it’s preferred to use an external trip unit.

Rating Plug for MCCB/ACB

 The rating plugs are field interchangeable from the front on all trip units
 It enables the protection thresholds to be adjusted according to the actual rated
current of the system.
 This function is particularly advantageous in installations that may require future
expansion or in cases in which the power supplied needs to be limited temporarily
(e.g. mobile Gen Set).
Selectivity & Discrimination :
If the upstream and down stream is selective that’s mean that the down stream will
trip before the upstream so the continuity of the system will be higher and also the
productivity and the down time is reduced .
Note : down time is the time needed to get the position of the fault

Types of Selectivity :
1- Totally selective 2- Partial Selective
 Total selective : is selective in all values of short circuit current

 Partial Selective : is selective up to certain value of short circuit current

The technique used to make the selectivity :
1- Current Selectivity 2- Time Selectivity
3- Current and Time Selectivity 4- Micro Logic Selectivity
5-Energy Selectivity ( Special to type A Circuit Breaker )
_________________________________________________________
1- Current Selectivity :
( Is preferred when the value of short circuit is wide from each other )

2- Time Selectivity :
( Not preferred because now we wait with the value of short circuit which may make
problems ) ( referred to CAT B)

Current & Time Selectivity :

3- Micro Logic Selectivity :

4- Energy Selectivity :
Is respond to Cat A Circuit Breaker only
In Energy Selectivity we depend of the different capability of every breaker ( Cat A)
to store different amount of Energy of short circuit , so the upstream can store energy
more than the down stream
.
Tables of Selectivity :
Example
Upstream Breaker: NSX160F With TM100D
Downstream Breaker: IC60N – 20A
Steps of Solution :
1- Define The Upstream and the Down stream CB which you want to study the
selectivity between them
2- Enter The page which you verify the step.1

3- Define the Colum of the Upstream rating

4- Define the row of the Downstream CB rating

The intersection is 0.8 that’s mean this selectivity is partial selectivity up to

1.5 KA.
