• Interpersonal communication is the process of exchange of information, through verbal


or non-verbal methods
• It is essential to:
✔ Solve problems
✔Negotiate
✔ Make decision
✔Discuss in groups
✔Listen and understand
PROBLEM-SOLVING
The following are the primary elements in the
problem-solving process:
1. Identify the problem – understand and
evaluate the problem
2. Look for solutions – generate possible
solutions
3. Choose a solution – analyse and choose
the most appropriate solution
4. Implementation of the solution –
implement the solution and establish
benchmarks
5. Monitoring progress – stay updated and
monitor the solution
NEGOTIATION The following are the primary elements in the
negotiation process:
1. Listen – understand and empathise others,
and clarify when needed
2. Say what you mean – be specific
3. Use body language – read the room
4. Manage emotions – recognise and react
accordingly
5. Ask effective questions – gather
information to avoid misunderstandings
6. Respect others – maintain courteous
attitude
7. Be open – adapt and explore possibilities
8. Reflect – seek feedback
DECISION- MAKING The following are the primary elements in the
decision-making:
1. Identify the decision – define the decision
2. Gather relevant information – seek for
internal and external source
3. Identify alternatives – provide more the
one option
4. Weigh the evidence – identify potential
pitfalls
5. Choose among the alternatives – choose
the most appropriate solution
6. Act – implement the decision
7. Review the decision – learn from mistakes
and improve
GROUP DISCUSSION The following are the primary elements in the
group discussion:
1. Introduce topic – provide introduction and
brief the purpose of discussion
2. Prepare – give some time for people to
take notes
3. Initiate – present thoughts and point of
view
4. Discuss – listen and speak if required
5. Ask questions – ask to clarify or challenge
the points made
6. Build consensus - find common ground
7. Conclude – summarise the points and
reach an agreement
8. Provide feedback – give comments for
improvement
LISTENING SKILLS The following are the primary elements in
listening skills:
1. Limit distractions – minimise interruption
and focus on the content
2. Use the right body language – provide
feedback through body language
3. Focus on the present – listen to
understand, don’t get caught up to
respond
4. Connect the meaning – consider the tone
used and body language
5. Summarise the content – counter check
the content shared
6. Ask questions – both close and open-
ended questions should be helpful
