ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) is a software system that integrates various business
processes across departments into a unified platform. It facilitates the flow of information,
helps automate back-office functions, and enhances decision-making. Commonly used by
organizations to manage operations such as finance, human resources, supply chain, and
customer relations, ERP systems help businesses streamline processes and improve
efficiency.

Features of ERP:

1. Integration: ERP integrates various functions like accounting, HR, procurement, and
production into one system.
2. Automation: Automates routine tasks like payroll, order processing, and invoicing.
3. Data Management: Centralizes data storage for real-time access across departments.
4. Customization: Offers modules that can be customized to fit the unique needs of an
organization.
5. Analytics & Reporting: Provides built-in tools for reporting and data analysis to
support decision-making.

ERP Models:

1. On-Premise ERP: Installed locally on a company’s hardware and servers, providing

full control over the system.
2. Cloud-based ERP: Hosted on a vendor’s servers and accessed through the internet,
offering flexibility and scalability.
3. Hybrid ERP: A mix of on-premise and cloud solutions, allowing some modules to
run locally while others are hosted.

Advantages of ERP:

1. Improved Efficiency: Streamlines business processes and reduces redundancy.

2. Data Accuracy: Provides a single source of truth, ensuring data accuracy and
reducing errors.
3. Better Decision-Making: Real-time data access enhances business intelligence and
strategic decisions.
4. Cost Savings: Automates processes and improves productivity, leading to cost
reductions.
5. Scalability: ERP systems can scale with business growth, accommodating increasing
operations.

Disadvantages of ERP:

1. High Implementation Costs: ERP systems can be expensive to implement,

especially on-premise solutions.
2. Complexity: ERP systems can be complicated to set up, requiring time, expertise, and
extensive training.
3. Customization Challenges: Customizing the system to fit specific needs can be
difficult and may require specialized resources.
4. Maintenance: On-premise ERP requires ongoing maintenance and upgrades, which
can be costly and time-consuming.
5. Security Risks: Cloud-based ERPs may face security issues if not properly managed
or secured.
