Activity 3

(Methods of Proof)
I. Determine the contrapositive of the following statements:
1. If x is less than zero, then x is not positive.
2. If x and y are both even integers, then x+y is even.
3. If Ferdie is an Ilocano, then he was born in Northern Luzon.

II. Find the negation of the following statements:

1. ∀𝑥, 𝑥 + 2 = 𝑥.
2. ∀𝑛 ∈ 𝑁, 𝑛 + 4 > 3.
3. ∃𝑛 ∈ 𝑁, 𝑛 + 4 < 7.
III. Prove the following using direct proof, proof by contrapositive and proof by contradiction:
1. If 5x – 3 = x + 5, then x = 2.
2. If x and y are both even integers, then x + y is even.
3. If 𝐴 ∩ 𝐵 = ∅, then 𝐵 ∩ 𝐴′ = 𝐵, for any sets A and B.
4. Show that if 2𝑎 + 1 is a multiple of 5, then 14𝑎2 + 19𝑎 − 19 is a multiple of 25

IV. Prove the following using PMI:

𝑛(2𝑛−1)(2𝑛+1
1. ∑𝑛𝑖=1(2𝑖 − 1)2 = 3
, for all integers 𝑛 ≥ 1.
2. (𝑎𝑏)𝑛 = 𝑎𝑛 𝑏 𝑛 , for all integers 𝑛 ≥ 1
𝑎(1−𝑟 𝑛 )
3. Show that 𝑎 + 𝑎𝑟+. . . +𝑎𝑟 𝑛−1 = ∀ 𝑖𝑛𝑡𝑒𝑔𝑒𝑟𝑠, 𝑛 ≥ 1.
1−𝑟
1 1 1 1 1
4. + 22 + 23 +. . . + 2𝑛 = 1 − 2𝑛 ∀ 𝑖𝑛𝑡𝑒𝑔𝑒𝑟𝑠 𝑛 ≥ 1
