Biology circulatory system important questions

Question and answers

1. What are the fluids in our body and state few charecteristics about them
Ans:
 Blood: contained in the heart and blood vessels it is red in colour (bright red in arteries ,
dull red in veins)
 Tissue fluid : occupies the space between cells in the organs
 Lymph : it is contained within lymph vessels, spleen and tonsils

2. State two examples for both circulating and non- circulating fluids
Ans :
Circulating fluids : blood and lymph
Non – circulating fluid : synovial fluid and vitreous humour

3. What do you mean by diapedesis and phagocytosis

Ans :
WBC’s are amoeboid and can produce pseudopodia with which they can squeeze through the
walls of capillaries into tissue is called diapedesis

Neutrophils engulf particle like solid substances , especially bacteria which is termed as
phagocytosis

4. State the threecellular elements of blood / blood corpsucles

Ans :
Red blood cells ( erythrocytes)
White blood cells ( leucocytes) [ tip leuco means white]
Platelets (thrombocytes)

5. What is the shape of erythrocytes and leucocytesrespectively

Ans: biconcave disc shaped and amoeboid shape respectively

6. What is the site of production of red blood cells in adults , children and embryo
Ans :
Marrow of long bones [adults]
Marrow of all bones [children]
Spleen and liver {embryo ]

7. What is the site of destruction of red blood cells
Ans : spleen , liver and bone marrow

8. What is carbon monoxide poisoning

Ans : Haemoglobin has a strong affinity (attraction) towards carbon monoxide thereby forming a
stable compound carboxyhaemoglobin (HbCO) . this cuts down capacity of blood transporting
oxygen sometimes even resulting in the death of the person due to lack of oxygen and this
phenomenon is called carbon monoxide poisoning

9. Why are white blood cells called leucocytes

Ans: since they spend most of their time in tisssue fluid or lymph and ver little time in blood

10. What is the composition of pus

Ans: dead white blood cells

11. What is meant by inflammation and state its charecteristics

Ans: Inflamation occurs due to the reaction of tissuesto injury and to localized invasion of germs
it is characterized by local heat, redness , swelling and pain

12. State the function of antibodies

Ans: WBC’s produce antibodies which kill or neutralize the germs, or poisons from them

13. What fight against the toxins produced by the disease causing germs
Ans: antitoxins

14. Give the logical order for blood clotting

Ans: Injured tissue cell , thrombokinase , prothrombin , thrombin,fibrinogen , fibrin , clot

15. What is meant by haemophilia

Ans: Haemophilia is a genetic disorder in which blood does not clot properly due to ack of blood-
clotting proteins . Also in case where the number of platelets fall to an abnormally low count

16. What is antigen and antibody

Ans: antigen is a specific protein on the surface of RBCs

Antibodies are the complementary proteins present in the blood plasma

17. Sate the blood group which is a universal donour and universal recipient
Ans: Universal donor – O+ Universal recipient – AB+

18. State the location of Heart ( centre between two lungs and above diaphragm )
19. What is the covering of the heart
Ans: pericardium

20. State the fluid present in pericardium and state its function
Ans: pericardial fluid , its function is to protect heart from mechanical friction during beating of
heart and protect it from mechanical injuries

21. What is meant by heart beat and state the time taken
Ans: the alternate systole of atria and systole of ventricles and the relaxing stage of all the walls
constitue the heart beat which takes about 0.85s

22. How are the sounds lubb and dub produced

Ans: the sharp closing of ario-ventricular valve produces the sound lubb while the closing of
roots of aorta and pulmonary semilunar valve at the roots of aorta and pulmonary artery get
closed

23. Where does the impulse or command that starts heart beat arise
Ans: pacemaker

24. Name the blood vessel which takes blood away from heart
Ans: artery

25. Name the blood vessel that brings blood towards the heart
Ans: veins

26. Sate the function of capillaries

Ans :
 Outward diffusion of oxygen
 Inward diffusion of carbon dioxide
 Aloows diapedesis

27. Smallest branch of artery and vein are

Ans: arteriole and venule

Ans: hepatic portal vein [ donot write portal vein only write hepatic portal vein]

31. What is the utility of hepatic portal system

Ans:
 Glyogenesis
 Deamination
 Detoxification of food

32. What is blood pressure

Ans: the pressure exerted by the flowing blood on the walls of arteries is called blood pressure

33. What is the composition of lymph

Ans: white blood cells , mostly lymphocytes

34. What are the main functions of lymph

Ans:
 Provides nutrition to parts where blood can not reach like eye
 Defends our body from foreign particles and micro-organisms by diapedesis and

Tonsils-on the sides of neck

36. State the functions of spleen

Ans:
 It acts as a blood reservoir and supplies blood in the times of haemorrhage or carbon
monoxide poisoning
 Produces lymphocytes
 Destroys worn out erythrocytes
 Spleen produces in the embryo
