Aim:

This unit aims to enable learners to proficiently conjugate German verbs, enhancing their ability to
communicate effectively in various contexts.

Instructional Objectives:

This unit intends to:

 Discuss the basic concept of verb conjugation in the German language


 Describe the different verb forms for regular and irregular verbs
 Practice conjugating verbs in common tenses like present, past, and future
 Conjugate a variety of German verbs confidently and accurately

Regular Verbs:

 Follow a consistent pattern in their conjugation.


 Most end with -en in the infinitive form.
 Conjugation is generally straightforward, with the addition of
personal pronoun endings.

Example:

Regular Verb: spielen (to play)


 Ich spiele gerne Gitarre. (I like to play the guitar.)
 Du spielst Fußball am Wochenende. (You play soccer on the
weekends.)

Irregular Verbs:

 Do not follow a consistent pattern in conjugation.


 May undergo stem changes or have unique conjugation forms.
 Past participle forms and conjugations need to be memorised as
they do not follow a standard pattern.

Example:

Irregular Verb: haben (to have)

 Ich habe einen Hund. (I have a dog.)


 Wir haben gestern Kaffee getrunken. (We had coffee yesterday.)
