because M. Hamel had said that he would question them on participles.

Q What did Franz notice that was unusual about the school that day?

That day, Franz noticed the absence of the routine commotion (शोर-ग़ुल) caused
by the opening and closing of desks, repeating of lessons in unison and rapping of
the teacher's ruler on the table. The usual hustle-bustle was replaced by a strange
stillness that was the characteristic of a school on a "Sunday morning."

The French districts of Alsace and Lorraine had been taken over by
the Prussians. Hence, the bulletin board displayed the news that
an order had come from Berlin to teach only German in the schools
of Alsace and Lorraine.

learn everything they could. M.Hamel taught patiently
and solemnly as if he wanted everybody to understand
every word he said.

Answer : Franz was shaken. He felt apologetic that he did


not study French enough and paid no attention. His books,
which seemed a nuisance and a burden earlier were now his
old friends. His feelings about M.Hamel also changed. He
forgot all about his ruler and how cranky and strict he was.

The people suddenly realized that French was precious to them


because it was being forced out of their minds and hands. It was being
taken away from them. Naturally, they understood its importance once
the threat to their culture, their language arose because France had lost
to Prussia in the war.

The chapter highlights the recognition of this loss when even the village
elders are sitting in the classroom and taking the last lesson. The beauty of
French language was highlighted, the teacher was dressed up and grieving as
it was his last lesson; he was leaving his garden behind which could also

the end, the school was dismissed with Vive La France.
