Q. What was Franz expected to be prepared with for school that day?
Q What did Franz notice that was unusual about the school that day?
That day, Franz noticed the absence of the routine commotion (शोर-ग़ुल) caused
by the opening and closing of desks, repeating of lessons in unison and rapping of
the teacher's ruler on the table. The usual hustle-bustle was replaced by a strange
stillness that was the characteristic of a school on a "Sunday morning."

Q The people in this story suddenly realize how precious their language is to
them. What shows you this? Why does this happen?

elders are sitting in the classroom and taking the last lesson. The beauty of
French language was highlighted, the teacher was dressed up and grieving as
it was his last lesson; he was leaving his garden behind which could also
stand for his legacy. Students paid rapt attention to the lessons that day. In
the end, the school was dismissed with Vive La France.

What was the mood in the classroom when M.Hamel gave his
last French lesson? (Delhi 2009)
ANSWER: When M.Hamel was giving his last French lesson, the
mood in the classroom was solemn and sombre. When he
announced that this was their last French lesson, everyone
present in the classroom suddenly developed patriotic feelings for
their native language and genuinely regretted ignoring their
mother tongue.

This is your last French lesson. How did Franz react to this
declaration of M.Hamel? (Delhi 2010)
ANSWER: Franz was shaken. He felt apologetic that he did not
study French enough and paid no attention. He understood that
all the village elders had come in order to say 'thank you' to the
master for his forty years of service and pay gratitude to their
nation. He wanted to study all the books and learn grammar that
had seemed a menace to him.

Franz was also surprised to see village elders sitting in the back
rows: old Hauser, with his three-cornered hat, the former mayor,
the former postmaster, and several others besides. Everybody
paid rapt (लीन) attention to the lessons and tried to learn
everything they could. M. Hamel taught patiently and solemnly as
if he wanted everybody to understand every word he said.
