A 6063 is an aluminium alloy, with magnesium and silicon as the alloying

elements. The standard controlling its composition is maintained by The

Aluminium Association. It has generally good mechanical properties and is
heat treatable and weld able. It is similar to the British aluminium alloy HE9.
6063 is the most common alloy used for aluminium extrusion. It allows
complex shapes to be formed with very smooth surfaces fit for anodizing and
so is popular for visible architectural applications such as window frames, door
frames, roofs, and sign frames.[1][2]Applications requiring higher strength
typically use 6061 or 6082 instead.

Chemical composition [edit]

The alloy composition of 6063 is: [3]

 Silicon minimum 0.2%, maximum 0.6% by weight

 Iron no minimum, maximum 0.35%
 Copper no minimum, maximum 0.10%
 Manganese no minimum, maximum 0.10%
 Magnesium minimum 0.45%, maximum 0.9%
 Chromium no minimum, maximum 0.10%
 Zinc no minimum, maximum 0.10%
 Titanium no minimum, maximum 0.10%
 Other elements no more than 0.05% each, 0.15% total
 Remainder Aluminium

Mechanical properties[edit]
The mechanical properties of 6063 depend greatly on the temper, or heat
treatment, of the material. [3]
6063-O[edit]
Un-heat-treated 6063 has maximum tensile strength no more than 130 MPa
(19,000 psi), and no specified maximum yield strength. The material has
elongation (stretch before ultimate failure) of 18%.
6063-T1[edit]
T1 temper 6063 has an ultimate tensile strength of at least 120 MPa
(17,000 psi) in thicknesses up to 12.7 mm (0.5 in), and 110 MPa (16,000 psi)
from 13 to 25 mm (0.5 to 1 in) thick, and yield strength of at least 62 MPa
(9,000 psi) in thickness up to 13 millimetres (0.5 in) and 55 MPa (8,000 psi)
from 13 mm (0.5 in) thick. It has elongation of 12%.
6063-T4[edit]
6063-T5[edit]
T5 temper 6063 has an ultimate tensile strength of at least 140 MPa
(20,000 psi) in thicknesses up to 13 millimetres (0.5 in), and 130 MPa
(19,000 psi) from 13 mm (0.5 in) thick, and yield strength of at least 97 MPa
(14,000 psi) up to 13 millimetres (0.5 in) and 90 MPa (13,000 psi) from13 to
25 mm (0.5 to 1 in). It has elongation of 8%.

6063-T6[edit]
T6 temper 6063 has an ultimate tensile strength of at least 190 MPa
(28,000 psi) and yield strength of at least 160 MPa (23,000 psi). In
thicknesses of 3.15 millimetres (0.124 in) or less, it has elongation of 8% or
more; in thicker sections, it has elongation of 10%.
Other tempers[edit]
6063 is also produced in tempers T52, T53, T54, T55, and T832, with various
improved desired properties.

Uses[edit]
6063 is used for architectural fabrication, window and door frames, pipe and
tubing, and aluminium furniture.[3]
Welding[edit]
6063 is highly weldable, using tungsten inert gas welding. Typically, after
welding, the properties near the weld are those of 6063-0, a loss of strength of
up to 30%. The material can be re-heat-treated to restore a higher temper for
the whole piece.
Aluminium Alloy 6063 Aluminium alloy 6063 is a medium strength alloy commonly referred to as an
architectural alloy. It is normally used in intricate extrusions. It has a good surface finish, high
corrosion resistance, is readily suited to welding and can be easily anodised. Most commonly
available as T6 temper, in the T4 condition it has good formability.

Applications 6063 is typically used in: Architectural applications Extrusions Window frames Doors
Shop fittings Irrigation tubing In balustrading the rails and posts are normally in the T6 temper and
formed elbows and bends are T4. T4 temper 6063 aluminium is also finding applications in
hydroformed tube for chassis.

Aluminium Alloy 6063A Aluminium alloy 6063A is a variation of 6063 with greater strength but
retains the same good surface finish qualities and affinity for anodising.

Applications 6063A is used in the same applications as 6063. It is also used in: Road transport Rail
transport Extreme sports equipment
ALLOY DESIGNATIONS Aluminium alloy 6063/6063A corresponds to the following standard
designations and specifications but may not be a direct equivalent : AA6063 Al Mg0.7Si GS10

TEMPER TYPES The most common tempers for 6063 aluminium are:

O – Soft

• T6 - Solution heat treated and artificially aged

SUPPLIED FORMS Alloy 6063 is supplied as standard extrusions including tee, channel, angle and flat
bar as well as box section and tube Extrusions• Tube• Bar• Rod

WELDABILITY Alloy 6063 is suitable for all conventional welding methods. Welding wire generally
should be alloy 5183 or alloy 4043. When maximum electrical conductivity is required use alloy
4043. For strength and conductivity use alloy 5346 and increase the size of the weld to compensate
for the lower conductivity.
