Hospital.

PART B

Answer any one full question from each module, each carries 14 marks.
Module I

11 a) With the help of circuit diagram explain the working of a high-pressure sodium (8)
vapour lamp.

b) Discuss the different qualities of good lighting system. (6)

OR

12 a) Explain the necessity of supplementary artificial lighting (5)

b) Explain the working of a mercury vapour lamp and list out its advantages (9)

Module II

13 a) State and explain the laws of illumination (6)

b) The candle power of a source is 300 candela in all directions below the (8)

lamp. The mounting height of the lamp is 6 m. Find the illumination at a point:

i). A just below the lamp.

ii). B which is 4 m horizontally away from the lamp on the ground.

iii). The total luminous flux in an area of 1.5-m diameter around the lamp on the
ground
Luminance is a measure of the brightness or intensity of light emitted or reflected from a surface in a given direction. It is
often measured in candela per square meter (cd/m²). OR
L=(E.R)/PI
Illuminance is the amount of luminous flux received per unit area on a surface, usually measured in lux (lm/m²).
14 a) Discuss the method to calculate the luminance and illumination due to a round (5)
use cosine law
source

b) Explain the concept of polar curves and calculation of MSCP using Rousseau's (9)
curve

Module III

15 a) Explain the design considerations while illuminating staircase and corridors (7)

b) The front of a building 30 × 12 m is illuminated by 20 ,1000-W lamps arranged (7)

so that uniform illumination on the surface is obtained. Assuming a luminous

efficiency of 40 lumens/W and a coefficient of utilization of 0.65. Determine the
illumination on the surface. Assume DF = 1.3 and waste light factor 1.2.

OR

16 a) A hall of 30 × 20 m × 5 m is to be provided with a general illumination of 300 (11)

lumens/m2. Determine the number of 500 W fluorescent tubes required, their
spacing, mounting height, and total wattage. Take luminous efficiency of
fluorescent tube as 25 lumens/W. Assume coefficient of utilization of 0.6 and
depreciation factor of 1.6

b) Define ULOR and DLOR (3)

Module IV

17 a) Discuss the requirements of street lighting and the level of illumination required (6)
for different types of street.

b) Explain the classification of different zones in a tunnel according to the (8)

illumination level required

OR

18 a) Discuss the classification of projectors used in flood lighting (4)

b) A building frontage 50m x 20m is to be illuminated by flood lighting projectors (10)

situated 20 m away. Estimate the number and size of projectors required to get an
illumination of 100 lux. Take coefficient of utilization = 0.5, depreciation factor
= 1.2 and waste light factor = 1.3. Sketch the projectors recommended indicating
the usual adjustments provided. The following table gives lamp and lumen output.

Watts 300 500 1000 1500

Lumens 5000 9000 18000 27000

Badminton court.

b) The boundary of a football stadium is 100m x 50 m. Calculate the number of (9)

luminaries required to get an illumination of 600 lux. Luminaries of 1000 W with
an efficiency of 90 lumen per watt are used for installation. Assume utilization
