PURPOSE

This manual contains important instructions for the installation, configuration and use Power Electronics
Freesun products HEM/K and PCSM/K GEN3.

TARGET AUDIENCE

This manual is intended for qualified customers who will install, configure and operate Power Electronics
Freesun products HEM/K and PCSM/K GEN3.

Only trained electricians approved by Power Electronics may install and commission the inverters. The
instructions assume that the installer is familiar with electrical installation rules and regulations.

SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
This manual contains important instructions for HEM/K and PCSM/K GEN3 that shall be followed during
installation and maintenance.

Read carefully all documentation before manipulating the product and pay special attention to safety
recommendations to maximize the performance of this product and to ensure its safe use and installation.

It is the installer’s responsibility to follow the instructions provided on this manual, to follow good electrical
practices and to identify all mentioned warnings and recommendations before starting up and operating
the inverter.

WARNING

If the instructions on this manual are not followed, the products may present a SHOCK HAZARD.
Read and retain the Hardware and Installation Manual for future reference. Before installing the inverter,

read all instructions and cautionary markings. Failure to follow the safety instructions could result in severe
shock or even death. Exercise extreme caution always to prevent possible accidents.

Ensure the inverter is completely disconnected from the power supply and connected to ground
before manipulating it or performing any maintenance tasks. Otherwise, electric shock hazard exists.
To prevent electrical hazards, disconnect input supply, connect the product to ground, remove all control
voltages before carrying out any task and ensure busbars are completely discharged.
Warning and safety labels must be properly placed in terminals, enclosures and control panels according
to local normative in force.

In addition to the recommendations on this manual, local and site-specific safety procedures must be
considered regarding electrical installation, buildings, fire and other regulations or network requirements
applicable to the installation and/or product. Also, national and local electrical codes must be followed in
order to avoid personal injuries and/or product damage.
Failure to comply safety instructions and electrical codes may void the warranty.

When working in electrical installations always remember to apply the FIVE GOLDEN RULES:

1. Visible cutout of all sources in voltage.


2. Mechanical locking of all cutting elements.
3. Check the absence of voltage.
4. Ground and short-circuit all possible voltage sources.
5. Define and mark the work area.

Do not modify the product in any way not authorized by Power Electronics.

WARNING

A solar or battery inverter is a dual power source. There may be voltage present, from the photovoltaic
generator and / or the product. It is especially important to consider this when disconnecting parts of the
system.

The input configuration and the fuse values must be selected according to the installation
characteristics and meet all code requirements. It is the responsibility of the installer to select the
proper overcurrent values.

Up to 1500 Vdc may be present in the solar array / BESS. Use LOTOTO procedures to ensure the
system is safely deenergized prior to making connections.

Once LOTOTO procedures are complete, ensure AC are also cut off before making any actions on
the product. There could be hazardous voltages present in the busbars and you may get an electric
shock.

Do not connect any supply to the product while the doors are open.
Otherwise, you could get an electric shock.

Do not apply power to a damaged inverter or to an inverter with missing parts even if the
installation is complete.
Otherwise, you could get an electric shock.

Keep all doors closed during product operation.


Otherwise, you could get an electric shock

Do not open the doors except for periodic inspections or wiring, even if the input power is not
applied. Otherwise, you could contact the charged circuits and get an electric shock.

Always operate switches with dry hands and use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Otherwise,
you could get an electric shock.

Any tasks performed must be carried out with, at least, two operators. The inverter should never be
operated by a single operator.

Do not use cables with damaged insulation. Do not subject the cables to abrasions, excessive
stress, heavy loads or pinching. Otherwise, you could get an electric shock.

Ensure compliance of all safety regulations for medium voltage operations that are in force at the
place where the inverter is installed. Otherwise, you could get an electric shock.

In case the product stops due to a power loss, do not perform any works on it. Automatic restart
function might be enabled, and you could get an electric shock.

Any tests performed on the products must be previously validated and approved by Power Electronics.

In the case of HEM / PCSM products, under no circumstances shall any modifications be made to the
transformer taps. If a transformer ratio test is required, it must be performed using the factory tap.

Always follow proper lockout / tagout procedures. For further information, refer to the Maintenance
Manual.

WARNING

The product contains capacitors on the AC and DC sides. The discharge time of the
capacitors is 5 minutes. Wait until the capacitors have been discharged before
carrying out any maintenance task.

Work at heights shall be carried out under the appropriate safety conditions and equipment and
always in accordance with the regulations of the country where the operation is carried out.

In the cabinets where high voltage is present, the installer must add a warning signal “DANGER –
HIGH VOLTAGE”.

PRODUCTS WHICH INCLUDE GFDI PROTECTION:


When a ground fault is indicated, normally grounded conductors may be ungrounded and energized or
normally ungrounded conductors may be grounded

PRODUCTS WITH UNGROUNDED POLES CONFIGURATION: EN


When a ground fault is indicated, normally ungrounded conductors may be grounded.

A solar o battery inverter is dual power source. There may be voltage present from the PV generator
or BESS and/or inverter. It is particularly important to consider this when disconnecting parts of the
system.

The input configuration and fuse ratings must be selected according to the characteristics of the
installation and comply with regulatory requirements. It is the responsibility of the installer to select the
appropriate overcurrent values.

Up to 1500Vdc may be present in the solar field or batteries. Use LOTOTO procedures to ensure that
the system has been safely de-energized before making connections.

ISOLATION GUIDELINES HEM / PCSM

To ensure the safety of the personnel who will be working on the inverter, it is imperative to open the input
circuit breaker and earth the MV switchgear supplying voltage to the product. Besides this, the customer
must remove voltage from the MV facility network and discharge it to ground by keeping it in ground
position while the product is open (unless a task specific Health and Safety study is completed, and task
specific procedure is available).

In addition, it is necessary to completely disconnect the DC power supply from the PV array or BESS
system to the product, unless a Health and Safety study has been performed and a task-specific
procedure is available. In this case, please note that the DC cabinet cannot be opened, as there is voltage
present from the PV field or BESS.

WARNING

To perform any maintenance or activity inside the products, the user must verify that no voltage is present
on the product, as well as carry out the LOTOTO procedure as indicated in the Maintenance Manual.
Always apply the five golden rules to ensure that no dangerous voltages are present.

These manoeuvres are beyond the scope of Power Electronics personnel. The customer will be
responsible for ensuring the safety of Power Electronics personnel working on the product.

GROUND CONNECTION HEM / PCSM

Electric shock prevention:

• The product chassis must be properly grounded to prevent a possible electric shock if a leakage
current flows through the enclosure. Disconnect all the voltage supplies before proceeding with
maintenance operations within the product. The product contains capacitors which may have a
hazardous voltage even when the input voltage is disconnected. Make sure the product is
discharged before performing any operation.

• Only connect the earth grounding to the product’s earth plate. Do not use the case or the chassis
screw for grounding.

• The earth protection cable must be connected first and disconnected last.

• The product must be connected to ground by using the ground busbar located in the medium
voltage switchgear.

AC output cables are medium voltage cables. As shown in the figure below, they are coaxial cables,
each one including earth. To carry out a correct connection, it is necessary to bond the earth of each
phase and connect it to the ground busbar of the product (located in the MV voltage switchgear).

CAUTION

Install the product on a solid and levelled surface. Follow the recommendations on how to build
the foundation. Otherwise, there is a risk of malfunction and even permanent damage.

Disconnect the input power in case the inverter gets damaged.


Otherwise, it could result in a secondary accident or a fire.

Do not allow lint, paper, wood chips, dust, metallic chips or other foreign matter into
the inverter. Otherwise, a fire or an accident could occur.

After the input power is applied or removed, the inverter will remain hot for a few
minutes. Touching internal hot parts could result in skin burns.

CAUTION

According to IEC 62920 type A inverters are not designed to be used in a residential environment.
This inverter may cause radio frequency interference, in which case the user may be required to take
additional mitigation measures against electromagnetic interference.

Observe all minimum clearance requirements for electrical code, thermal and safety requirements.
Refer to NEC 110.34 for additional clearance requirements for product above 600 Volts

NOTICE

RECYCLING
Product packaging must be recycled. Separate all different materials (plastic, paper, cardboard, wood…)
and place them in the corresponding containers. Ensure waste collection is properly managed with a Non-
Hazardous Waste Agent.

To guarantee health and natural environmental sources protection, the European Union has
adopted the WEEE directive concerning discarded electric and electronic product (SEEA).

Waste of electrical and electronic product (WEEE) must be collected selectively for
proper environmental management.

Our products contain electronic cards, capacitors and other electronic devices that should
be separated when they are no longer functional. These WEEEs should be managed
accordingly with a Hazardous Waste Agent.

Power Electronics promotes good environmental practices and recommends that all its products sold
outside of the European Union, once they reach the end of their life, are separated and the WEEE managed
according to the particular country applicable legislation (especially electronic cards, capacitors and other
electronic devices).

REQUIRED PERSONAL PROTECTION EQUIPMENT (PPE from now on)

PPE is required according to standards for repairing and maintaining Freesun inverters. Always Follow
the site operative instructions to fulfil the compliance of national or local normative.

In case of actions with voltage presence, it is compulsory to use an Arc Flash Safety Kit (gloves, clothes
and face shield).

A detailed example of PPE used will be shown below. Customer must specify in his safety instructions
(risk assessment and method statements) which are the PPE required and when and how they should be
used according to his electric arc studies, the characteristics of site, inverters, installation and country.

Power Electronics accepts no responsibility or liability for any damages resulting from
inappropriate use of the product or failure to comply national or local normative.

The following table includes just an example of commonly used PPE description. Always follow local
regulations / NFPA-70E standard about Safety and Health.

une utilisation et une installation en toute sécurité.
Il est de la responsabilité de l’installateur de suivre les instructions fournies dans ce guide, d’adopter les
bonnes pratiques en matière d’électricité et d’identifier tous les avertissements et recommandations
mentionnés avant de d’activer et d’utiliser l’onduleur.

AVERTISSEMENT

Si les instructions fournies dans ce guide ne sont pas respectées, les produits peuvent présenter
un RISQUE DE CHOC ÉLECTRIQUE. Lisez et conservez le Guide du matériel et d’installation pour
référence ultérieure. Avant d’installer l’onduleur, lisez toutes les instructions et les mises en garde. Le
non-respect des consignes de sécurité peut entraîner un choc grave ou même la mort. Faites toujours
preuve d’une extrême prudence pour prévenir des accidents éventuels.

Assurez-vous que l’onduleur est complètement déconnecté de la source d’alimentation et relié à


la terre avant de le manipuler ou d’effectuer des tâches d’entretien. Dans le cas contraire, il y a un
risque de choc électrique.
Pour prévenir les risques électriques, débranchez l’alimentation entrante, reliez le produit à la terre,
supprimez toutes les tensions de commande avant d’effectuer une tâche et assurez-vous que les barres

Assurez-vous de respecter toutes les règles de sécurité pour les opérations de moyenne tension
en vigueur à l’endroit où l’onduleur est installé. Dans le cas contraire, vous pourriez recevoir un choc
électrique.

N’effectuez aucune tâche sur le produit s’il cesse de fonctionner en raison d’une perte de
puissance. La fonction de redémarrage automatique peut être activée et causer un choc électrique.

Tout essai réalisé sur les produits doit au préalable être validé et approuvé par Power Electronics.

En aucun cas des modifications ne doivent être apportées aux prises des transformateurs des produits
HEM / PCSM. Si un essai de rapport de transformation est nécessaire, il doit être effectué à l’aide de la
prise d’usine.

Suivez toujours les procédures appropriées de cadenassage / d’étiquetage. Pour plus d’information,

d’entrée et de mettre à la terre l’appareillage de commutation MT alimentant le produit en tension. Outre
ces mesures, le client doit supprimer la tension du réseau du site MT et le décharger à la terre, en le
gardant dans cette position alors que le produit est ouvert (à moins d’avoir réalisé une étude de santé et
de sécurité spécifique à la tâche et qu’une procédure spécifique à la tâche ne soit disponible).

De plus, il est nécessaire de débrancher complètement la source d’alimentation en CC de la batterie


photovoltaïque ou du système BESS du produit, à moins d’avoir réalisé une étude de santé et de sécurité
et qu’une procédure spécifique à la tâche ne soit disponible. Dans un tel cas, veuillez noter que l’armoire
électrique CC ne peut pas être ouverte en raison d’une tension présente dans le champ photovoltaïque
ou le système BESS.

CONNEXION À LA TERRE HEM / PCSM

Prévention des chocs électriques:

• Le châssis du produit doit être mis à la terre correctement pour prévenir un choc électrique
possible en cas de courant de fuite circulant à travers le boîtier. Débranchez toutes les
alimentations en tension avant d’effectuer les opérations d’entretien à l’intérieur du produit. Le
produit contient des condensateurs qui peuvent présenter une tension dangereuse, et ce, même
lorsque la tension d’entrée est déconnectée. Assurez-vous que le produit est déchargé avant

d’effectuer toute opération.

• Raccordez la mise à la terre uniquement à la plaque de terre du produit. N’utilisez pas le boîtier
ou la vis du châssis pour la mise à la terre.

• Le câble de protection à la terre doit être raccordé en premier et déconnecté en dernier.

• Le produit doit être relié à la terre à l’aide de la barre omnibus à la terre située dans l’appareillage
de commutation à moyenne tension.

Les câbles de sortie CA sont des câbles de moyenne tension. Comme l’illustre la figure ci-dessous, ce
sont des câbles coaxiaux, chacun comprenant la terre. Pour effectuer un raccordement approprié, il est
nécessaire de relier la terre de chaque phase et de la raccorder à la barre omnibus à la terre du produit
(situé dans l’appareillage de commutation MT).

MISE EN GARDE

Installez le produit sur une surface solide et nivelée. Suivez les recommandations sur la
construction de la fondation. Dans le cas contraire, cela peut entraîner des dysfonctionnements et
même des dommages permanents.

Débranchez l’alimentation entrante en cas de dommage à l’onduleur.


Dans le cas contraire cela pourrait causer un accident secondaire ou un incendie.

Ne laissez pas la peluche, le papier, les copeaux de bois ou de métal, la poussière


ou d’autres corps étrangers s’infiltrer dans l’onduleur. Dans le cas contraire, un
incendie ou un accident pourrait se produire.

Une fois que l’alimentation entrante est appliquée ou retirée, l’onduleur restera
chaud pendant quelques minutes. Le contact avec les parties internes chaudes peut
causer des brûlures de la peau.

MISE EN GARDE

Selon la norme IEC 62920, les onduleurs de type A ne sont pas conçus pour une utilisation dans
un environnement résidentiel. Cet onduleur peut causer des interférences aux fréquences
radioélectriques. Dans un tel cas, l’utilisateur peut être tenu de prendre des mesures d’atténuation
supplémentaires contre les interférences électromagnétiques.

Respectez toutes les exigences de dégagement minimal du code de l’électricité pour assurer la
sécurité et la protection thermique. Référez-vous à l’article NEC 110.34 pour d’autres exigences de
dégagement minimal pour les produits dont la capacité est supérieure à 600 volts

RECYCLAGE
L’emballage du produit doit être recyclé. Triez les différents matériaux (plastique, papier, carton, bois...) et
placez-les dans les contenants correspondants. Assurez-vous que la collecte des déchets est effectuée

Afin de garantir la protection de la santé et des sources naturelles de l’environnement,


l’Union européenne a adopté la directive DEEE relative aux déchets d’équipements
électriques et électroniques (SEEA).

Les déchets d’équipements électriques et électroniques doivent être récupérés

Nos produits contiennent des cartes à puces, des condensateurs et d’autres dispositifs
électroniques qui doivent être retirés lorsqu’ils ne sont plus fonctionnels. Ces DEEE doivent

Power Electronics encourage les bonnes pratiques environnementales et recommande que tous ses
produits vendus à l’extérieur de l’Union européenne, une fois qu’ils atteignent la fin de leur cycle de vie,

ÉQUIPEMENT DE PROTECTION INDIVIDUELLE (désormais EPI) OBLIGATOIRE

L’EPI est obligatoire conformément aux normes de réparation et d’entretien des onduleurs Freesun.
Suivez toujours les instructions opérationnelles du site pour assurer la conformité aux règlements nationaux
et locaux.
Si vous devez effectuer des tâches en présence de tension, il est obligatoire d’utiliser une trousse de
sécurité contre les arcs électriques (gants, vêtements et écran facial).
Un exemple détaillé de l’EPI utilisé est illustré ci-dessous. Le client doit préciser dans ses consignes de
sécurité (évaluation des risques et méthodologie) l’EPI obligatoire et quand et comment il doit être utilisé,
en se basant sur ses vérifications d’arc électrique, les caractéristiques du site, les onduleurs, l’installation
et le pays.

4. HANDLING, TRANSPORTATION AND


INSTALLATION 4

4.1. Delivery and storage


Power Electronics’ products are carefully tested and packed for shipment. In the event of damage to the
product during transportation, notify the transport agency and Power Electronics (International +34 96
136 65 57, US +1-415-874-3668), or your nearest agent, within 24 hours from receipt of the goods.

Make sure the model and serial number of the inverter match the information on the delivery packing list.

The inverter should be stored in a location that is protected from direct sun and moisture excess.

4.2. Handling and transportation


The instructions to be followed during handling and transport of the product are indicated throughout this
section. The use of any other method of handling not described therein may damage the product.

Preparation before unloading


The product may be delivered in a maritime container or fixed to a platform. Depending on the case,
one guideline or the other must be followed.

a) MARITIME CONTAINER

To unseal and open the container, the following instructions must be followed:

• Cut the door seal and the tarpaulin cord seal.

• Remove the cord by sliding it out of the lugs in such a way that both short sides and a single
long side of the container are free of the cord. Bundle the excess lanyard properly to ensure
that the inverter is correctly hoisted onto the container, as well as any other process described
in this document.

• After releasing the lanyard on all three sides of the container, remove the tarpaulin from the top
of the container, folding it over the long side of the container from which the lanyard has not
been removed.

Once the tarpaulin has been removed, the necessary top bars must be removed to ensure that the
product is correctly hoisted onto the container.

Note that in the case of HEMK / PCSK, each container can include two or three inverters.

In any case, to avoid any movement that could damage any of the products during transport, they have
been fixed with straps (1), with an L-shaped metal plate at the rear of the inverter with the last position
(2), a wooden beam at the front (3) and with air bags at the sides (4).

All these elements must be removed in compliance with the relevant health and safety measures in
accordance with local and national regulations. In this case:
• Untie or cut the webbing (1), never the slings and set them aside. Keep the slings knotted at the
top to facilitate access when hooking up to the crane at a later stage and prevent them from
slipping into the gaps at the sides of the inverter, as this space is very small and could make it
impossible to handle the slings.
• If there is one, unscrew the L-shaped metal plate at the rear.
• Remove the side air bags.

b) PLATFORM

The inverter must be received covered by a tarpaulin to protect it during the journey and either fixed to
the transport platform or to the trailer. The product is secured to the platform by means of a series of
fastenings.

To release the product, the protective tarpaulin must be removed in accordance with the safety
precautions and the fastenings of the inverter to the platform must be unhooked.

Note that chains, restraints and tarpaulins are not supplied by Power Electronics. The transport
service is responsible for having incorporated the necessary lashing equipment and tarpaulin.

Unloading of the inverter


Before unloading the inverter, the optimal conditions of the lifting slings, as well as any other element
involved in this process, must be ensured. In the event of identifying any type of damage, defect or
problem in the lifting elements, as well as their accessories, these must be replaced with similar or
equivalent ones in accordance with the regulations in force in each country. Do not use damaged or
defective slings.

The following images show the lifting points corresponding to each piece of equipment. The lifting
points will be the upper vertex of each sling.

Before lifting the inverter, the following considerations must be considered:

• Do not bend slings or tie knots.

• Keep the slings knotted at the top to ensure access when hooking up to the crane.

• Attach the inverter to the lifting system. The inverter has a reinforced steel base with rings EN
designed for lifting with slings.

• Attach both ends of each sling to the lifting tool used that complies with the occupational safety
standards applicable at the installation site. Power Electronics recommends the use of an H-lift
outrigger or equivalent alternative as simple spreader beams for use as lifting tools.

• Loading and/or unloading must be carried out in accordance with the lifting plan according to
the occupational safety standards applicable at the installation site, taking into account the
health and safety measures, as well as assessing the necessary auxiliary means in accordance
with the regulations in force in that country.

• Take into account cutting angles and use special protection if necessary.

• If single spreader beams are used, the lifting angle must be checked and complied with in
accordance with current local and national loading regulations. This type of lifting tool applies
to both HEM/K and PCSM/K.

• In the case of HEM / PCSM if the lifting tool is attached to the crane by two lifting chains, the
lengths of the chains must be set to keep the inverter in balance. The lifting angle must be less
than 90 degrees. If this is not the case, check and comply with the lifting angle in accordance
with local and national loading regulations.

The inverter can only be removed from the top of the container, never from the rear of the container. All
the occupational safety standards applicable at the place of installation must be followed at all times,
taking into account the health and safety measures, as well as evaluating the necessary auxiliary means
in accordance with the regulations in force in that country. Never stand underneath the inverter to
work, or within a radius that could allow the load to fall on the operator.

If the maximum tonnage of the cranes does not meet the requirements, this could cause damage to
inverter and personnel. The load capacity must be greater than the weight of the inverter in compliance
with all occupational safety standards. See the "Dimensions and weight" section for more information on
the products.

After unloading of the inverter, if it has been transported by container, it is the responsibility of
the client to reseal the container after unloading the product prior to carrying out the following points:

• Clean the container of all reinforcements, locks and additional hardware. The container must be
clean, and the waste must be disposed of in the appropriate containers in accordance with the
regulations of that country. EN
• Reinstall the top bars of the container.

• Turn and tighten the tarpaulin over the container bars.

• Once the container is completely covered, thread the cord back through the eyelets and tie it in
the same position where it was originally tied and sealed.

• Close the container doors.

4.3. Standard storage


Standard storage is defined as the expected period of time from the time the product arrives at its location
until commissioning occurs. It is assumed that this period should be less than 3 months. This period may
vary depending on local climatic conditions. The storage temperature of the products is indicated in the
"Technical characteristics" section.

The customer is responsible for deciding whether the products will be installed within the standard period
or, on the contrary, there is no defined date for installation. In this case, the customer must take
appropriate measures.

The following rules must be followed to keep it in proper condition until the time of installation:

• The product should be stored in a location that is protected from moisture (inside and outside the
product).

• Avoid floodable grounds. No part of the product should ever be submerged under water.

• Store product on a flat, even surface. Never use log woods underneath the product.

• Store product away from high traffic areas where the inverter could get damaged.

• Make sure animals cannot get inside the product.

• Keep doors closed and covers in place during storage.

• Store unit away from corrosive chemical products or gases.

• According to the recommendation of Power Electronics, the inverters should be stored indoors
and protected from the weather outside. In this case, all defined external packaging and protective
elements must be kept in place.

• If indoor and covered storage is not possible, all external protective elements must be removed
in order to avoid any counterproductive effects on the inverters. This packaging material must be
stored indoors to be replaced when the inverters is shipped to its final destination.

• Once the inverter is located at its final destination, all external packaging and protective elements
must be removed, except for the protections that cover the air inlets of the inverter. These shall
be removed prior to commissioning.

• Slings must be stored in a dry, ventilated place, free of dust, grease, acids or corrosive products.
The ambient temperature should not exceed 60°C. They should not be exposed to high
temperatures. They should not be placed directly on the floor, being recommended the use of
wooden supports with rounded profiles or on pallets or shelves, for example. It is recommended
not to expose them to direct sunlight or other sources of ultraviolet radiation.

Note: When inverters are stored for an extended period (3 months or more) prior to commissioning, or if
the inverter has been commissioned but remains idle for a month or more, additional considerations to
those described above must be taken into account. Please refer to section “Extended storage” for further
information.

Protective elements: VCI foams


VCI foams are corrosion inhibitors in foam format measuring 250 x 250 x 10mm located inside the
inverter. They are used to protect the inverters during sea transport or possible adverse environmental
conditions.

The removal of these foams must be done by cutting the fastening flange carefully to avoid any damage
to the inverter or any of its components.

These foams must be removed just before the inverter is commissioned and Power Electronics
recommends that they remain inside the inverter.

4.4. Extended storage


Extended storage is considered to be any period until commissioning that exceeds three months, during
which the inverter is located in its final position outdoors, i.e. exposed to external climatic conditions such
as rain, snow, sun, wind and temperature variations, among others.

In this case the product requires more protection by means of increased VCI foams. The following table

4.5. Foundation considerations

NOTICE

The instructions on this section do not replace the internal regulations of each country.

Prior to installation, a geotechnical study of the terrain where the inverter will be installed must
be carried out, in order to determine its characteristics and decide the most suitable type of
foundation.

It is the responsibility of the client to design and build the foundation.

It is recommended that anchor holes be drilled before placing the product in its final location. For more
details regarding the anchoring of the product, please refer to the "Anchoring requirements" section.

The products support different accessories such as the noise attenuation kit. The customer must
review the accessories available for their project in order to perform the foundation calculation
correctly and comply with the operating distances of the product.

Soil
The soil should have the following characteristics:

• It must be dry, compacted, stable and homogeneous.

• It must be gravel, ballast or pebble.

• It must have hard or medium harshness characteristics.

• The calculation of the maximum permissible pressure on the ground must comply with local
and national standards, as well as with any other requirements regarding natural disasters
(hurricanes, earthquakes, etc.) that may apply to the place of installation.

• Do not install on floodable grounds.

• The soil must be provided with drainage systems, especially in high water table and / or heavy
precipitation sites.

• It is recommended that the ground does not exceed the level of the foundation.

• The minimum soil compaction degree is 98%.

• Maximum slope is 0,25%.

The foundation must provide a solid and levelled surface for the inverter. It may be a concrete slab,
concrete footings, steel piles or concrete pillars1.

Concrete slab

NOTICE
it is important to position the inverter so that the side where the access doors to the field
replaceable units are located (see section Cabinet distribution) faces the road entrance, or an
area of level ground with vehicle accessibility.
It is necessary to allow vehicles to approach the slab for maintenance and inspection of the products.

A layer of lean concrete can be laid between the slab and the ground. The slab must comply with the
following characteristics:

• Dimensioning must be adequate in relation to the weight of the product, with sufficient

• It must have trenches wide enough to guarantee proper cable passing.

• The slab must comply with minimum working distances around the product for its safe and
correct operation. These distances will be shown below.

In case there is any specification regarding variable actions such as snow, wind or earthquake, the slab
must also meet the following requirements:
• Ability to withstand compressive forces of 25N/mm 2.

• Steel frame with capacity to withstand traction forces of 500N/mm 2.

• Considering severe wind conditions (greater than 60m/s) dimensions would be:
o The longitudinal side of the frame must be able to withstand forces up to 80kN.
o The transverse side of the frame must be able to withstand forces up to 10kN.
Please notice that thickness of the slab must be determined based on the results of the
geotechnical study.

Steel or concrete pillars


When using steel or concrete pillars, the seismic zone in which the product is installed, i.e. whether it is
a moderate or high seismic zone, must be taken into account.

The following image (footprint view) shows for HEMK / PCSK the anchorage points of the product
according to the seismic zone. For moderate seismic zone it is recommended to use a base of six (6)
pillars (marked in blue) as shown in the figure.

In the case of high seismic zone, it is necessary to add one more anchor point (marked in red), so it is
required a base of seven (7) pillars.

Similarly for the case of HEM / PCSM, if the product is installed in a moderate seismic zone it is
recommended to use a base of ten (10) pillars (marked in blue).

In the case of high seismic zone, it is necessary to add three more anchor points (marked in red) so it
is recommended to use a base of thirteen pillars (13) as shown in the following image.

NOTICE

The design, construction and maintenance of the structure with pillars, as well as their
characteristics is responsibility of the customer.

It is mandatory to build an auxiliary platform (or balanced, safe, secure and passable
structure/base) above the pillars to facilitate access to the product. The platform must be at least
2m (80 in.) larger on each side of the inverter in order to guarantee, permanently, a minimum
practical perimeter around the product, with ground level at the height of the product for
maintenance works. It is necessary to have an auxiliary element that prevents workers from falling
to different levels on the perimeter of the work platform, as well as ensuring safe access to it.
Failing that, some method of lifting must be available/provided at the plant to allow safe access to the
product and that meets all the mentioned requirements.

Anchoring must always be done with screws. They should not be welded to prevent corrosion problems
and, specially, power electronics problems.
Any other anchoring system different from the one mentioned on this manual is not allowed and,
in that case, the warranty will be voided.

If an inverter HEMK / PCSK is connected to a Twin Skid Compact GEN3, it must be noted that the
station cannot be installed on pillars, unless the station is placed on a solid structure capable of
supporting the weight of the MV transformer base.
It is the customer's responsibility to design and build the structure.

4.7. Clearances

NOTICE
The products are designed with thermal insulated cabinet doors to ensure the optimum outdoor
performance. For an adequate inspection, cooling, operation and heavy vehicles with crane
passing, it is important to leave a walkway around the inverter.

The products support different accessories such as the noise attenuation kit. The customer must
check the accessories available for his project to comply with the operating distances of the
equipment.
For more information about available accessories, please refer to the Accessories Manual of the products.

The following figures show the front and bottom views of the products HEM/K and PCSM/K respectively
with the recommended safety clearances.

When installing two inverters with the air outlets facing each other, it is necessary to increase the distance
between them to ensure the optimum performance of the cooling system, resulting in a total distance of

4.8. Unpacking
Prior to installation at the final location of the inverter, all external protective and packaging elements
must be removed in accordance with all the occupational safety standards applicable at the installation
site. For this purpose:

1. Position the inverter on firm ground in a non-final location.

2. Remove the polypropylene (PP) film (1) from the base of the product, which is attached to the rest
of the protective elements.

3. Lift and place the inverter in its final position, once the polypropylene sheet has been removed.

4. Remove the adjustable film (2) from the contour of the inverter.

5. Remove the cardboard protections (top and side corner protectors) (3).

6. Remove slings and shackles (4),once the inverter has been secured in its final position.

The product is properly labelled including project information, reference and serial number of the product.

After unpacking, the customer must install the protective visors and the ventilation grilles, the
polycarbonates in the DC cabinet, GPS antenna (if applies) and uninstall the SSAA transformer brackets.

NOTICE
The polycabonates are installed at the same time as the equipment is wired, so keep them in a safe
place until wiring. For more information, see the "DC Connections" section.

Do not remove the transparent packaging film located in the inductance cabinet, SSAA transformer
cabinet and/or MV transformer cabinet until hot commissioning.

Waste disposal is customer's responsibility, and it is not within Power Electronics' scope.

Ventilation visors and grids


The customer must install the visors on the ventilation grilles of the product. These visors are delivered
inside the inverter to avoid damage during transport. EN
Before assembly, the inverter must be disconnected at all times, without any active zones in panels,
busbars, AC circuit breaker (in the case of HEMK / PCSK) or the filter itself (boards, capacitors and other
elements with voltage presence).

Eight visors must be installed in the air inlets of the DC cabinet: four at the front and four at the rear. To
do this, screw in the three M6 screws on the top of the visor as shown in the following picture. Applies to
all inverters.

Note: It is possible that a new model of visors and grids (applicable to HW1.1 onwards) may need to be
installed in the field. If so, follow the procedure below.

The steps to be followed to install all the components are described below. Please note that the
procedure explains the process of replacing one grid, being applicable to the rest of the components.

Step 1. Mount the grid Ref.01 on the unit by fastening it with six M1367L screws.

Step 2. Install the visor Ref.02 on the grid using the four centering pins to position it. Then fix the visor
using eight self-tapping screws M3690.

Step 3. Once the grid and visor have been mounted on the inverter, the filter Ref.03 must be installed.

This element does not use screws for fastening; to install it, it must be inserted through the lower part of
the visor until it fits into the slot in the grid intended for this purpose.

Activate the spring lock and insert the filter inside the visor until it stops in the visor's perimeter seat.
Then release the filter locks, making sure that the latches are inserted into the seats provided in the visor:

In case of HEM / PCSM, must also be installed twelve visors on the air inlets of the MT transformer
cabinet (six at the front and six at the rear). To do this, screw in the M6 screws at the top of the visors

NOTICE

Anchoring should always be done with screws. They must not be welded to avoid corrosion problems.
Any other anchoring system than the one mentioned in this manual is not permitted.

To facilitate anchoring tasks, it is recommended to use additional brackets attached to each


anchor point as shown in the pictures below. Please note that the anchoring of the products
depends on the seismic zone in which it is located.
These brackets are not mandatory and are not intended for moderate or high seismic compliance.

The location and dimensions of the anchor (footprint view) are shown below, depending on the product.

In the case of HEMK / PCSK is located in a moderate seismic zone, it is recommended to use six (6)
anchor points (marked in blue). Use twelve (12) anchor screws.

If, on the other hand, it is located in a high seismic zone, it is necessary to add one more anchor point

5.1. Wiring access

CAUTION

For a correct electrical installation, it is very important to respect the bending radius of the cable.
It is essential that the trenches are deep enough. It is recommended that the cables enter straight
and that the bending radius is outside the product so as not to force the connection terminals.

The following figures (bottom view) show the location of the access points for DC connections, auxiliary
connections and AC output according to the product.

installing the appropriate glands and cable glands on the plates before inserting the cables. Once

5.2. Ground connection


The products have a common ground to which the customer must connect the ground busbar located
in the DC cabinet. The ground busbar installed in this area is the grounding point for the general
grounding of the product.

In addition to the main ground busbar, there are other grounding bars in the product:

• For both HEM/K and PCSM/K there is a grounding plate in the user cabinet for customer
connections. See section "User cabinet connections" for more information.

• In case of HEM / PCSM, the grounding plate must be considered for the connection of the
protective conductor by the customer. Their location depends on the type of MV switchgear

(UL / IEC). See section "AC connections for HEM / PCSM " for more information.

Main ground busbar is made of tinned aluminum. Connection should be done considering the following
recommendations:

• The ground cable must enter in the inverter through the removable metal plate located in the
bottom of the cabinet and be connected to the main ground busbar. The cable must be routed
in the inverter only with conduit hubs or fittings rated as 3, 3S, 4, 4X, 6 or 6P1.

• Before connecting the cable, clean the contact surfaces with a clean cloth and ethanol cleaner.

• Apply conductive paste between the terminals and the plates to improve and protect any
electrical contact Al - Al, Al - Cu and Cu - Cu exposed outdoors, allowing the reduction of
electrical resistance and the sealing of the contact parts to avoid corrosion. The working
temperature range of this paste should be between -40ºC and 150ºC (-40ºF to 302ºF).

5.3. DC Connections
The DC input connections from the PV or BESS field must be made in the DC cabinet. However, before
connecting the power cables to the input terminals, the following assembly sequence of the different
elements that affect this cabinet must be followed:

• Installation of the protection fuses1.


• Connection of the DC+ / DC- power cables.
• Installation of polycarbonates.

The first step is to install the protection fuses before connecting the power cables to the DC cabinet
plates. The fuses are shipped separately from the products and must be installed in the field. It is imperative
that this wiring sequence is followed, failure to pre-install the fuses may result in serious damage to
the product. Refer to the "Fuse Installation" section for more information.

The power wiring is then installed in the DC cabinet. This process must be carried out in conjunction
with the installation of polycabonates as they are installed between the different polarities of the DC
cabinet connection plates. It is necessary to consider their location before wiring the product. See the
section "Installation of polycarbonates" for more information.

Fuses installation
As mentioned above, the DC cabinet fuses are supplied separately and must be installed in the field.
Note that the DC cabinet may vary depending on the project configuration. The fuse installation
procedure is common to all configurations and is detailed throughout this section.

WARNING
Before performing any of the steps explained in this document, ensure all safety and health
regulations are followed and that proper PPE is used.

Ensure there are no voltages present. Otherwise, you may get an electric shock.

Read all instructions and cautionary markings. Failure to follow the safety instructions could result in
severe shock or even death. Exercise extreme caution always to prevent possible accidents.

Nuts are preinstalled in the fuse-holders. Fuses, screws, washers and nuts are sent separately. To carry out
the installation of fuses it is necessary to have the materials listed below.

PROCEDURE

NOTICE

Before installing the fuses in the DC cabinet, check the project configuration that applies to the particular
case.

Regardless of the configuration, the procedure to install the fuses is the same. User must take the first
fuse and follow these three steps. Repeat for all fuses.

STEP 1. Open the DC cabinet

Open the DC cabinet using the key of the product.

STEP 2. Preparation

Apply conductive paste between the fuse and the plates to improve and protect the electrical contacts.

STEP 3. Installations of fuses

Place the fuse in the fuse holder and use two washers (1 belleville + 1 wide flat) on each side. Put the
nut with the washer on the upper rear part of the fuse. Position the materials as shown in the following
pictures.

Use a torque wrench with a 17mm socket bit with a tightening torque of 40Nm. If necessary, use a fixed
spanner 17 mm for fastening the rear nut with washer.

General characteristics DC connections


DC+ and DC- cables from PV or BESS must be routed from beneath the inverter and connected to the
input plates. Each cable must be routed in the inverter only with conduit hubs or fittings rated as 3, 3S,
4, 4X, 6 or 6P1.

Recommended cable section for DC connections is 250 mm2 for IEC normative and 450 kcmil for UL
normative. The maximum admissible cable section for DC connections for IEC and UL normative,
respectively, is:

• 400mm2 (750kcmil) for connection of one cable per terminal.

• 300mm2 (600kcmil) for connection of two cables per terminal.


Additional considerations to take into account:

• The connection of more than two cables per terminal is not allowed. In this case, the
operation of the product may be compromised, and the warranty may be voided.

• In products with individual terminals, when choosing the cable to be used, it must be taken
into account that the maximum current supported by each individual terminal is 400A.

DC busbars are made of tinned aluminum. Connections should be done considering the following
recommendations.

• Before connecting the cables, clean the contact surfaces with a clean cloth and ethanol cleaner.

• It is recommended to use two-hole copper, aluminum or copper-clad aluminum terminals.

• Lugs with a temperature rating of either 75ºC or 90ºC (167ºF or 194ºF) are acceptable for DC
terminations.

• Use copper, aluminum or copper-clad aluminum 75ºC (167ºF) cables with conductor size
according to the National Electrical Code, ANSI/NFPA 70 for this Temperature rating of wire.
As an alternative, use copper, aluminum or copper-clad aluminum 90ºC (194ºF) cables with
conductor size according to the same NEC requirement. In all cases, cables must have a
minimum rated voltage of 1500V.

• The use of fully covered cables is recommended. In case any part of the cable is bare, a
minimum distance of 20mm (0.79in.) must be respected.

• Apply conductive paste between the terminals and the plates to improve and protect any
electrical contact Al - Al, Al - Cu and Cu - Cu exposed outdoors, allowing the reduction of
electrical resistance and the sealing of the contact parts to avoid corrosion. The working
temperature range of this paste should be between -40 ºC and 150 ºC (-40ºF to 302ºF).

• In case of needing to turn the bolts for an easier connection, the minimum safety distances
between metallic parts must be kept (20mm / 0.79in.).

• Use a spring washer and a fender washer between the nuts or bolts head and the busbar or
terminal lug.

• The earth of cable meshes must be connected to ground.

the DC cabinet (one per module) are used, and to isolate the DC input cables from fuses, optional

5.4. AC Connections
This section will detail the connections required for the AC part of the products:

• In the case of HEMK / PCSK, the AC terminals are located on the side of the product. These
terminals must be used to connect the AC output to the MV transformer.
• In the case of HEM / PCSM, these connections are located in the MV switchgear cabinet.

AC connections for HEMK / PCSK


The HEMK / PCSK inverters can be connected to a Power Electronics’ MV Skid / Twin Skid, or to a
transformer not integrated in a MV Skid / Twin Skid provided by Power Electronics.

MV Transformer
A galvanic and preferably high-efficiency isolation transformer must be placed between the HEMK /
PCSK products and power grid. If the transformer is not provided by Power Electronics, it must
comply the following requirements:

Low Voltage

• The applicable standards of the country must be taken into account.


• The MV transformer can be a liquid-immersed transformer (e.g., with mineral oil or bio-
degradable oil) or a dry-type transformer.
• Each inverter needs a separate galvanically isolated low-voltage winding. Hence, the parallel
operation of several standard inverters without prior notice to Power Electronics with one low-
voltage winding is not permissible.
• In product with grounded poles, the low-voltage winding of the MV transformer must withstand
non-sinusoidal voltages up to ±2200V phase to ground. The maximum root-mean-square
(rms) value of the voltages to earth is +1000V. In case of ground failure, it may appear instantly
higher voltages.
• In product with ungrounded poles, the low-voltage winding of the MV transformer must
withstand non-sinusoidal voltages up to ±1100V phase to ground. The maximum root-mean-
square (rms) value of the voltages to earth is +600V. In case of ground failure, it may appear
instantly higher voltages.
• The low-voltage windings of the medium-voltage transformer must be designed for the rated
output voltage of the inverter.
• The maximum AC output continuous current of the inverter can be found in the inverter
datasheets, HW manuals and brochures.
• The low-voltage winding of the MV transformer can only be configured as Delta or floating
wye. Never connect to ground the neutral point of the low-voltage winding.
• The low-voltage windings of the MV transformer must be designed for voltages that are
capable of a voltage gradient dV/dt of up to 500V/μs to earth. The line-to-line voltages are
sinusoidal.
• The minimum short circuit impedance at maximum temperature of the MV transformer must
be 7% 2.
• The maximum short circuit impedance at maximum temperature of the MV transformer must
be 10% 6.

The short-circuit impedance of the transformer should be defined so that it does not exceed the maximum short-circuit
current on the low voltage side. For example, for a short-circuit impedance of 7%, the maximum SCR on the MV side is
100. The minimum short-circuit impedance can be reduced for low SCR conditions (<100). For more information, please
contact Power Electronics.

Medium Voltage

• The voltage level on the medium voltage side of the MV transformer must be selected in
accordance with the voltage level at the grid-connection point.
• A tap changer is recommended on the medium voltage side to enable alignment to the voltage
level of the medium-voltage grid.
• The MV winding of the MV transformer can be configured Delta or Wye. If it is Wye configured,
the connection of the resulting neutral point at the utility neutral interconnection point does not
affect the inverter performance.
• The MV transformer must deliver the rated current registered by the inverter at the different
temperatures described in section “Technical characteristics”.
• The frequency of the MV transformer must be selected in accordance with the frequency at
the grid-connection point (50Hz or 60Hz).
• According to IEC 62109-2, table 30, the minimum inverter isolation requirement is basic
insulation.

AC connections for HEM / PCSM

WARNING

The HEM / PCSM products have a padlock located on the MV switchgear that blocks tampering with the
closing or opening of the switchgear. Only authorized Power Electronics personnel may operate on the
MV switchgear.

Access to the MV switchgear cabinet is only allowed once all voltage sources have been removed.
Otherwise, you could get an electric shock.
Refer to the “Safety instructions” for further details and an illustrative figure.

Once AC connections have been finished, lock the plate of the MV switchgear cabinet by using
the square polyamide lock. Once locked, the access plate should never be opened, even if PPE is used,
unless the user has ensured that no voltages are present by following the LOTOTO procedure. Otherwise,
you could get an electric shock.

Medium voltage cables must be selected according to the line voltage of the installation.

The AC connection terminals are compatible with copper terminal, bimetallic terminal and zinc aluminum
terminals. Power Electronics recommends the use of elbow connectors.

It is strongly recommended to install a surge protection device (SPD) at the end of each high voltage
line.

User must perform the connections L1, L2, L3 in the AC terminals. It is recommended to follow these
steps to ensure proper and enduring AC connections:

1. Remove the bottom metallic panel. Mark and drill the holes for cable access. Install proper cable
glands and watertight fittings. Once finished, install the panel again.

2. Route AC cables from beneath the product, through the bottom metallic panel.

3. Pass each cable through a clamp and secure it. Connect also the cable ground to the ground
busbar. The use of the MV cable clamps supplied with the product (two clamps per cable in the
UL case with a range between 25-38mm) is mandatory to accommodate the MV cables, to
make a good connection and to avoid mechanical stresses.

4. Connect the elbow connectors to the AC terminals. Ensure connectors are free of moisture or
dust and use grease to ease the connection. Tighten according to the MV switchgear
manufacturer’s instructions3.

The switchgear UL corresponding to HW 1.1 consists of a protection switchgear and a cable feeder
for user connections. The following picture shows the location of the terminals, the cable clamps and
the grounding plate for the connection of the protective conductor by the customer.

Each conductor is hooked to the clamps provided for this purpose until the subsequent final connection of
the cylinders that connect to each phase of the MV switchgear as shown in the following image.

In the case of HW1.3 for HEM / PCSM inverters the MV switchgear differs, and the customer connections
are affected. The new IEC switchgear consists of one protection switchgear and two line cells. The MV
cables will be connected from the bottom to each of the line cells, each conductor being hooked into the
clamps provided for this purpose until the final bottler connection.

At the bottom is the grounding plate for the connection of the protective conductor by the customer in the
IEC switchgear. They are located on the protection cell and must be connected by the customer from the pit
of line cell 1.

The customer has a 50x10mm plate identified as BE13:1 and it is only possible to connect from the top. The
cable entry covers of the line cubicles are blind and do not have defined cable glands.

The following picture shows the passage between line cell 1 and the protection cell.

5.5. User cabinet connections


The control and auxiliary service connections are located in the user cabinet. Do not make any
modifications (drilling, mechanical changes, etc.). The use of PPE is recommended to open and perform
any action on it.

The ground plate has 8 through holes of diameter 8mm (0.31in.).

Please note that not all holes are available. The following image shows the holes that are free
(3,5,6,7,8) for the customer to use.

User cabinet layout


Depending on the configuration of each project, three panels can be differentiated within the user cabinet:
the main customer panel (PPCU), the customer options panel (POCU) and the user control panel
(PTCU).

Note that this configuration is an example presentation of the user cabinet. The different panels
are affected by configuration variables, namely fiber optic switch integration, DC metering integration,
optional Econ Mode, etc.

The location of the different panels of the user cabinet is shown below.

• Main customer panel (PPCU). Corresponds to the signal interconnection panel between the
product and the client. There are three types: empty, basic and advanced. This panel incorporates
a terminal block (X35) and an RJ45 connector (U04) located at the bottom of the panel available to
the customer. The basic and advanced configurations include a series of single-phase and three-
phase protections, respectively.

• Control user panel (PTCU). This is optional. It corresponds to the product's communications
panel. It varies according to the fiber optic switch option chosen.

• Customer options panel (POCU). It is optional. It is installed for HEM / PCSM products only when
the Econ Mode option is selected. A connection point is available to the customer.

wiring diagrams specific to each project.

6. LEDS AND CONTROLS

6.1. LEDs and controls
The following control elements and indicator LEDs can be found on the door of the Main control cabinet.

• ON/OFF key: Allows to stop or start the power modules of the inverter.

• AC Disconnect: Disconnector. Allows the AC disconnection of the product. The manipulation of


this selector must only be used for the LOTOTO procedure of the inverter.

• DC Disconnect: Disconnector. Allows the DC disconnection of the product. The manipulation of


this selector must only be used for the LOTOTO procedure of the inverter.

• STOP: Pushbutton. Allows to stop and isolate the inverter in case of an emergency situation.
Auxiliaries are not isolated with this pushbutton.

• LEDs: Show the operation status of the products, according to the following table:

Do not use the emergency pushbutton to perform regular stops. It should only
be used when an emergency occurs.
Otherwise, longevity of the main components could be shortened and result in
product damage.

• DISPLAY: USB port. Allows connecting the display unit to the Main Control cabinet door.

ONLY use the DISPLAY port to connect the display unit. Do not connect other
USB devices. Otherwise, the port may get permanently damaged, and you may
cause product malfunctioning.

• ETHERNET: RJ45 port. Allows connecting an Ethernet cable in the Main Control cabinet door to
access the product’s network.

For PCS battery inverters, the number of DCx VOLTAGE PRESENCE LEDs varies depending on the
number of busbars.

In the case of two busbars, there will be two DCx VOLTAGE PRESENCE LEDs which will light up when

DC voltage is present. Similarly, in the case of four busbars, there will be four LEDs, corresponding to
each bus bar.
