“Fourteen killed and hundreds left sickened after mysterious gas leak;
Department of Chemistry, University of Karachi is investigating for the cause.”
This news hit my ears when I returned home after a regular game of cricket. The
incident made me disquiet, and I started pondering how can a gas kill someone.
The next day, I asked my High School Chemistry teacher about the incident. He
told me about the insidious functioning of the gas. From that day, I started taking
extra interest in Chemistry. I started studying Chemical principles and
phenomena. So for my undergraduate degree, Chemistry was the most obvious
choice.
At the start of my undergraduate degree, I lost my focus, which affected my
learning and grades badly. I was lagging my class fellows. I then realized that this
type of attitude is not going to work. I changed myself. During summer break, I
worked on myself. I contacted professors and got course contents for the next
semesters. I started studying by myself. From next semester, I was a changed
person. Not only, my grades improved but I also won the Chemistry quiz
competition. This deeply engraved a belief that with focus, determination, and
hard work, anything is achievable. I kept this attitude and ended up as one of the
top students.
During me under graduation, chemistry fascinated me a lot. I came to know how
Chemistry is involved in our everyday lives. The food we eat, the clothes we wear,
and medicines everything can be studied under Chemistry. I also came to know
that Chemistry can help us to improve our lives. We can engineer molecules that
can cure diseases. We can obtain fuels with higher efficiency and lower
environmental hazards. We can address global issues like the shortage of
freshwater and global warming. This compelled me to pursue a master’s degree in
chemistry.
Apart from my studies, I have an ardor for teaching as well. For the past three
years, I am involved in the teaching of about 15 high school students. I have not
only tried to improve their grades but also tried to broaden their thinking and
their viewpoint about education. I am also motivating other students in the
community to get an education.
In contrast to under graduation, which was theoretically based, a master’s degree
will enhance my knowledge and develop my technical skills. I believe that I
possess sound knowledge of undergraduate chemistry and the perseverance
required to succeed at the graduate level. Due to the lack of research facilities
and the environment in Pakistan, I decided to pursue a master’s degree abroad.
During my graduation, I am interested in working in the field of synthetic organic
chemistry. I especially want to study under the supervision of Professor Yunus
Turkmen as I am a great admirer of his work in synthetic organic chemistry and
catalysis. The MSc students of his research groups gain valuable insight into
modern research of the field and get accepted in the prestigious institutes.
In today’s world, people are suffering from a wide variety of diseases most of us
have never heard of. So to combat these diseases, drug design is a necessity. My
long-term goal is to work as a medicinal chemist to discover new methodologies
for potential drugs. Obtaining an MSc is the first step. My next step will be to
obtain my Ph.D. in organic chemistry.
I am very thankful to you for providing me an opportunity to express myself.
