Refugees

Refugees are people who fled from their birth country due to the fear of being victimised , jailed,
political issues such as race, culture, or belonging in a social group.

The problems that refugees face are poverty, high unemployment, leaving their relatives behind, no
homes, water, electricity or working toilets, not having enough food, etc.

Refugees also have some important needs such as: water, food, shelter, clothes and basic medical
treatment.

(xenophobic = people who hate refugees)

Organization that helps refugees


UNHCR (United Nation Refugee Agency) is a organization that provides food, shelter, and basic
medical treatment for any diseases that refugees need. They also have a registration system
which helps the organization identify any special needs that refugees may have. It also helps
the organization to help protect the refugees. The organization also helps reunite separated
children from their parents or families.

Protective clothing

Firefighters protective clothing:


Helmets, gloves, firefighter suit.
Firefighters' clothes need to have properties such as waterproof, fireproof, dry and cool, light
weight and need to be kept safe from heavy objects falling on them.

Textile materials that can suit these properties are Nomex, Kevlar and Teflon

NSRI (NATIONAL SEA RESCUE INSTITUTE) protective clothing:


Life jacket, pants, ‘long johns’, gloves and helmets
NSRI workers need to have properties such as waterproof, lightweight, durable, needs to keep
them warm in a cold environment weather.

Textile materials that can suit these properties are Nylon, Teflon and Kevlar.
Hypothermia
Hypothermia is when a person is exposed to extremely cold weather/temperature for a long
time.
