A South African entrepreneur and founder of and Training
INO Biodiesel, a company based in Pretoria.

INO Biodiesel specializes in converting waste

cooking oil into biofuel, which can be used as
a renewable alternative to petroleum diesel.
This biofuel powers generators, mining
equipment, fleets, and even airplanes.
Mamaila’s company contributes significantly
to the green economy of South Africa by
preventing used oil from contaminating
water sources and creating jobs for women
and youth in rural areas of Limpopo,
Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, and Mpumalanga.

Her entrepreneurial journey began during the

COVID-19 lockdown when she decided to
address the unemployment crisis by starting
a business that contributes to job creation
and environmental sustainability. Since its
establishment, INO Biodiesel has employed
numerous women and youth, directly
impacting over 20,000 people through its
waste oil collection and recycling network.

In addition to promoting green fuel, Mamaila

is committed to empowering communities
by offering employment and training in
biodiesel production and environmental
research.

A South African entrepreneur best known as
the inventor of DryBath, a waterless body
cleaning gel. He grew up in a rural area with
limited access to water, which inspired him
to develop a hygiene solution that didn't rely
on water.

At 17, Ludwick came up with the idea for

DryBath after a friend complained about
having to bathe. Using his mobile phone to
research, he created the business plan.

He developed an entrepreneurial mindset

which led him to pursue business. In 2009, he
had his big break as he received financial
aid to support his DryBath business idea.
This is the first all-in-one substituting
lotion in the world. After application, users
do not need to take a bath as it substitutes
for soap, water, and lotion. The company's
mission is to improve hygiene standards in
water-scarce regions by providing
affordable, waterless products like DryBath,
while also promoting sustainability and
access to basic sanitation.

Headboy Industries aims to empower

underserved communities by offering
practical, health-focused innovations that
address the world's growing water scarcity
and hygiene issues.

A South African entrepreneur and the founder
of Lilly Loompa, a company that creates
upcycled homeware from discarded waste
materials. Born in Paarl, Lizl faced numerous
financial difficulties after a failed business
venture, losing almost everything. This
adversity led her to start Lilly Loompa in 2016,
where she turned her circumstances into an
opportunity for sustainable innovation by
transforming waste into stylish, usable home
products.

Lilly Loompa's products include upcycled

lamps, storage solutions, and home décor
made from materials like glass, wood, and tin
cans. The company's signature items, such
as the Toona Can and slumped wine bottle
platters, reflect Lizl's passion for design and
environmental conservation. Through her
work, she addresses South Africa's pollution
challenges and promotes the circular
economy by giving waste materials a second
life.

Her success has garnered attention,

including winning the Stellenbosch Network's
#IdeasForChange challenge, which supports
innovative green businesses. Today, Lilly
Loompa continues to grow, with Lizl
advocating for environmental sustainability

Mining
South Africa is one of the largest producers of minerals
globally, with mining being a cornerstone of its economy.
The industry includes the extraction of gold, platinum,
coal, diamonds, and other minerals, contributing
significantly to exports, employment, and the GDP.

Mining accounts for around 8% of the country's GDP and

employs hundreds of thousands of workers. It provides
critical raw materials for the global and local industries,
generating revenue through exports and taxes.
Additionally, the sector stimulates investments in
infrastructure, such as railways and energy production

Energy
The energy industry, driven by coal, renewables, and
nuclear power, is essential for South Africa’s industrial
and economic growth. Although coal remains the
dominant source of energy, renewable energy sources,
like wind and solar, are gaining momentum as the
country shifts toward a cleaner energy future.

The energy sector powers South Africa's industries and

households. It contributes significantly to GDP, with coal

WELL-KNOWN COMPANIES IN THIS INDUSTRY

12
The Economy’s Leveraging
Technologies for
Industrial Productivity
Management Information Systems (MIS) is
important in managing and organizing data
in many industries, particularly in mining and
manufacturing. Through automated systems,
companies can improve decision-making by
quickly analyzing production levels, resource
allocation, and customer needs. Mining
companies like Anglo American and De Beers
use MIS to monitor supply chains and
optimize their operations.

Cloud Computing provides businesses with flexible

data storage and accessibility, while Business
Analytics enables data-driven decisions. FinTech
companies like Discovery and Nedbank use cloud
solutions to securely store customer data and
analyze real-time financial trends. This enables them
to offer personalized financial services and ensure
more efficient banking operations. MTN and
Vodacom also use cloud-based analytics to track
consumer patterns and improve mobile services.

13
The Economy’s Leveraging
Technologies for
Industrial Productivity
Business Analytics helps industries turn data
into actionable insights. Mining companies use
analytics to optimize extraction processes and
predict equipment failures. Financial institutions
like First National Bank (FNB) employ analytics to
better understand customer behavior and tailor
services. This enhances operational efficiency
and customer satisfaction across sectors.

South Africa’s financial sector heavily relies on

Financial Technology for innovations like mobile
banking, peer-to-peer lending, and secure online
transactions. Digital banking platforms like FNB
(First National Bank) and Standard Bank offer
seamless online transactions, mobile banking
apps, and digital wallets. These services enable
tourists to manage their finances easily, pay for
services, and transfer money without the need for
physical bank visits. Blockchain technology is
used to enhance transparency and security in
transactions. For example, Wala, a South African
blockchain-based financial platform, provides
low-cost financial services to underserved
communities, including tourists.

14
The Economy’s Leveraging
Technologies for
Industrial Productivity
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is used across
various sectors in South Africa, including
mining, manufacturing, and financial
services. AI-driven automation helps in
predictive maintenance in industries like
mining, while in financial services, AI is used
for customer support and fraud detection.
FinTech companies like Jumo and Luno utilize
AI to optimize customer interactions and risk
management.

Robotics is growing in South Africa’s

manufacturing and mining industries.
Robotics improves precision and safety in
mining operations, reducing the need for
human workers in dangerous
environments. In the automotive sector,
companies like Toyota South Africa Motors
have adopted robotics to enhance
production efficiency, speed, and quality
control.

15
The Economy’s Leveraging
Technologies for
Industrial Productivity
With the rise of digital transactions,
Cybersecurity has become a critical focus in
protecting data from cyber threats. FinTech
companies like Yoco and PayGate prioritize
encryption and multi-layered security
approaches to secure financial transactions.
Larger institutions, such as Standard Bank,
have also implemented advanced
cybersecurity frameworks to safeguard their
platforms from evolving cyberattacks.
