Elements of Art

The elements of art are the building blocks

used by artists to create a work of art.

Line is a mark with greater length than width.

curved; thick or thin.

Color - according to dictionary.com, it is the
property possessed by an object of producing
different sensations on the eye as a result of
the way the object reflects or emits light. It has
three main characteristics: hue (the name of
the color, such as red, green, blue, etc.), value
(how light or dark it is), and intensity (how
bright or dull it is).

Subject Matter of the Philippine Contemporary Arts

If the traditional artists’ art consisted of portraits, landscapes, still life and human
interest mostly as naturally as possible, the contemporary artists’ works are
expressions of freedom, experimentation and exploration of patterns, figures, objects,
and a combination of many things that are important to them.

Subject matter in contemporary art is not confine to representations of human

figures and landscapes. The favourite subjects in contemporary art are children,
women, or the environment such as Juan Alcazaren’s Flora and Fauna. It can also be
a combination of any of these.

Tokwa Penaflorida’s “Diwata”

image taken from https://www.behance.net/gallery/2342660/Bleed-and-Drip

In some artworks, the subject matter is not easily recognized. If the artwork is
an experiment on technique, the subject matter is the technique itself. In others, such
as those in conceptual art, the viewer has to engage in thinking and exploring the
meaning of the artwork.

Dan Matutina’s work

Some artworks are intended to make a statement about an issue so the viewr is
guided by a written explanation. In Plet Bolipata’s Cat Dolls, the subject matter
combines human figure and cat head. The artist constructed a human skeleton made
of wires and covered it with textile. The cat head is made of resin. Several of these are
found in front of her house to serve as “guards”.

13
Let’s Think Deep

Search the internet for artworks by Alfredo and Isabel Aquilizan,Pacita Abad, or
Impy Pilapil. Choose one artwork that you like. Study the elements and principles
employed in the artwork. Then answer the following questions. Write your answers
in your notebook.

1. Describe the work?

2. What is the subject matter of the artwork?
3. What are the dominant colors?
4. How does the size of the repeated elements vary?
5. Is it beautiful? Why do you think so?

Let’s Remember

What are the most common subject matter in

Philippines contemporary arts? How can
unity and emphasis be achieved in art
production?

Let Me Apply It

Direction: Create a 2D or 3D art that has a unique subject matter which

reflects your experiences as a Senior High School student. Apply the
elements and principles necessary to achieve a creative output. Record a
2- to 3-minute video presentation of your output.

14
Read each question carefully and answer them in complete sentences.

1. What the subject matter of your 2D or 3D art piece?

2. How did you make us of the elements and design in your

output? Explain and describe it according to

2.1 balance

2.2 emphasis

2.3 texture

2.4 shape and form

2.5 color

3. How can this artwork reflect your own identity?

15
Let’s Check It

Direction : Based on what you have learned in this module, complete

the sentences in the figures below to make a meaningful statement.
