LEARNING PACKAGE NUMBER 1:
Limit of a Function, Limit Laws, and Limits at Infinity
As a student, you need to know that you need the concept of limits. It could be the
speed limit at a highway, laws, restrictions, a maximum value, or a boundary. Calculus is a
branch of mathematics with a foundation on the limits of functions. Thus, a solid grasp of
the different types of functions is necessary. Limits are essential for other important
Calculus topics such as derivatives and integrals. Bridges have weight limits. Weight limits
depend on the construction of the bridge itself, its age, the materials used to build it, and
some other factors. You are going to learn also about the different laws of limits that you
can apply to easily and efficiently find the limit of a function and apply the limit laws in
evaluating the limit of algebraic functions.
In connection to this, you should be able to do the following; determine the limit of a
function without using table of values or using its graph, determine the limit of a function
without using table of values or using its graph, apply the different limit laws in evaluating
limit of a function, and learn about Limits at Infinity of Some Algebraic Functions.
ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS:
2. How can you determine the limit of a function without graphing the function
or using table of values?
3. How does the limit at infinity of a polynomial function depend on its end
behavior?
LESSON COVERAGE:
1
Lesson 1: Limit of a Function
In this lesson, you will discover more about limit of a function using table of values. What
comes to your mind when you hear the word “limit”? It could be the speed limit at a
highway, laws, restrictions, a maximum value, or a boundary. Limits are essential for other
important Calculus topics such as derivatives and integrals. Also, you will demonstrate
OBJECTIVITY in making judgment of one’s characteristics.
I. LEARNING TARGETS:
At the end of this lesson, YOU CAN illustrate the limit of a function using a
table of values and the graph of the function by:
1. defining the limit of a function, one-sided limits, infinite limits;
2. estimating the limit of a function using tables of values; and
3. estimate the limit of functions using graphs.
Answer: _____________________
b. Activation of Prior Knowledge
Title of the Activity: Approaching the Area of the Unit Circle
Instructions: Approximate the area of the unit circle using areas of polygons.
Answer the guide questions.
Procedure
1. Answer Part A of the worksheet. This part serves as a review on the area
of a circle.
2. In your computer, open the GeoGebra applet through this link:
https://www.geogebra.org/m/q59yJf4t
3. Explore the applet by changing the values the radius 𝑟 of the circle and
the number of sides n of the inscribed polygon. Observe the values for the
2
area of the circle, the area of the inscribed polygon, and the difference
between their areas.
c. Guided Questions:
1. What happens to the area of the polygon as the number of sides 𝑛 increases?
2. What do you think is the value being approached by the areas of the polygons as
the number of sides 𝑛 increases?
d. Linking Statement:
Based on your responses, as the number of sides 𝑛 increases the area of the polygon
also increases, the applet shows the use of an inscribed polygon on variable sides as a tool
for approximating the area of a circle. As you increase the number of sides "n", you will see
that the area becomes more and more accurate. Thus, today, you are going to learn more
about Limit of a Function. You will be working with a partner and you are expected to
illustrate the limit of a function using a table of values and the graph of the function
by defining the limit of a function, one-sided limits, infinite limits, estimating the limit
of a function using tables of values and estimate the limit of functions using graphs.

Calculus is mathematics of change. In this lesson, you learned about evaluating the limits of
functions. Then, you already know how to estimate limits by using a table of values and
evaluate the limits of functions by observing their graphs. Graphs are visual representations of
data. By using graphs, we simplify numerous and complicated figures. That is why graphs are
often used to analyse data. Also, as a student, how will you demonstrate OBJECTIVITY in
making judgment of one’s characteristics?

Lesson 2: Limit Laws
In this lesson, you are going to learn about the different laws of limits that you can apply to easily
and efficiently find the limit of a function. You are going to learn the eight basic limit laws that are
useful to easily evaluate the limit of a given function. You are done with the first lesson of this
week; you were able to determine the limit of a function through table of values and a graph. Also,
at the end of this lesson, you will demonstrate EXCELLENCE as you innovatively works in any task
given.
I. LEARNING TARGETS:
At the end of this lesson, YOU CAN illustrate the limit laws by:
1. determining the limit of a function without using table of values or using
its graph; and
2. applying the different limit laws in evaluating limit of a function.

Based on your responses, the limit of the given function is 3. In this lesson, we will
illustrate the eight basic limit laws that are useful to easily evaluate the limit of a given
function. Thus, for today, you are going to learn more about the Limit Laws. You will
still be working with your pair and you are expected to illustrate the limit laws by
determining the limit of a function without using table of values or using its graph
and applying the different limit laws in evaluating limit of a function.

Reflection
You have learned about the different limit laws in this lesson that are useful to easily evaluate
the limit of a given function. I hope these laws have helped you evaluate the different limits.
Without the use of table of values and graphing, you were still able to evaluate them. Also, as a
student, how will you demonstrate EXCELLENCE as you innovatively works in any task given?
V. INDEPENDENT PRACTICE
Title of Activity: Limit Laws
Instructions:
1. Determine the limit of a given function.
2. Show complete solution for your final answer.
3. Do not place your answer beyond the box
4. Show complete solution for each law.
5. Do this individually.

Lesson 3: Limits at Infinity
You were able to identify the limit of a function f(x) as x approaches a real number in
previous sessions. Depending on the value that x approaches, the limit may or may not
exist. Let us discover more about the limit of different types of function as 𝑥 increases or
decreases without bound. Also, at the end of the lesson, you will demonstrate EXCELLENCE
as you become proactive and innovative in dealing with situations.
I. LEARNING TARGETS:
At the end of this lesson, YOU CAN apply the limit laws in evaluating the limit
of algebraic functions (polynomial, rational, and radical) by:
1. illustrate limits at infinity of some algebraic and transcendental functions;
and
2. compute the limits at infinity of some algebraic and transcendental
functions.

3. Observe the table of values of each function as 𝑥 becomes infinitely large or small.
Verify your observation by graphing the function using the link below.
Desmos. “Graphing Calculator.” Desmos. “Graphing Calculator.”
c. Guided Questions:
1. Is the given function algebraic or transcendental?
2. How will you describe the values of each function as 𝑥 becomes infinitely large or
small?
d. Linking Statement:
Based on your responses, you were able to see the limit of ( ) as x approaches
infinity through table of values and graphing. The given function is algebraic. You
could also observe from the graph that as 𝑥 approaches positive infinity, 𝑦 also
extends to positive infinity. Likewise, as 𝑥 approaches negative infinity, 𝑦 extends to
positive infinity. Thus, the last lesson for this week is Limits at Infinity. Thus, you
will be working with a pair and you are expected to apply the limit laws in
evaluating the limit of algebraic functions (polynomial, rational, and radical)
by illustrate limits at infinity of some algebraic and transcendental functions
and compute the limits at infinity of some algebraic and transcendental
functions.
