Homonymy Vs Polysemy.

Sence and sence relations:


What are sence relations?

Few theories discuss the nature of this concept if we recall were the
image theory, classical theory, causal theory and prototype.

We have in to our mind a thousands of concepts (sence), it's not easy


to access these Concepts Whenever we needed them, there has to
be Some kind of relation, Some kind of network that connect all
these senses together.

Ex: Bank
→The side of river.

→ A money vaults.

Has multiple Sences.

Father
Dad
Same exact sence, the same meaning.

What relation exist between them if any.

Sence relation:

1. Homonymy and polysemy.


2. Semantic Similarity or (synonym).
3. Semantic opposition.
4. Taxonomic or Hierarchical relations..

The general difference between Homonymy and polysemy.


Homonymy:

Sences are unrelated.

Homonymy: What is related could be the Sound or Othography.

Orthography: the spelling used or the letters used.


-Two sences that unrelated but look exactly the Same we call this
Homography.

-Two words that are unrelated in sence but sound exactly the same
we call this homophony.

-Two words that unrelated sences that sowed the same and the
spelled exactly we call this pure homonymy.

Polysemy: Sences in polysemy are related.

EX:Magazine
→ Something you read.
→ Cartridge to shore bullets for gun.

we go to the etymology of the word.

Semantic Similarity (synonymy):

Synonymy
different phonological words with highly related meaning.

Taxonomy:
Is a hierarchical relation that we impose out of nowhere.

-Where do color terms go?


Colors are really viewed as a Continuum So you might start with the
dork color and ends up with light Color.

all of these in the same level and we call them sisters (Taxonomic
sisters).

Hyponymy:
level of conceptual representation.

Inclusion
If I is a hyponym of X then y contains the many properties of
Somethings that extra.

Transitivity:
If X is a y and y is a Z then X is a Z.

3. Lexicalized Hierarchy / Taxonomy:

Lexicalized: people have gotten into the habit of grouping these


things together.

Similar to Taxonomy (may have).

5. Member Collection relations:

ship + ship + ship -> Fleet

Bird + Bird + Bird→ flock

6. Protion Mass relation:

Mass nouns → which are nouns that are there to stand for things
that have no unit of measurement.
