Science Lesson Plan

Purpose:
● Today’s focus will be reviewing previous material, gauging background knowledge, and
preparing students for the new SOL objectives.

● Earth and Space Systems 2.6

The student will investigate and understand that there are different types of weather on
Earth. Key ideas include
a) different types of weather have specific characteristics;
b) measuring, recording, and interpreting weather data allows for identification of
weather patterns; and
c) tracking weather allows us to prepare for the weather and storms.

Objectives:
The student will be able to write and describe the stages of the water cycle given a
worksheet with 100% accuracy.

Procedure:
Introduction
● Students will come to the carpet.
● I will ask students what precipitation is
● I will ask them how they think it forms
● Give time for students to answer and class discussion
● Play the Brainpop Jr. of the Water Cycle
● Students will go back to their desks
Development
● I will show the Water Cycle PowerPoint

● After the PowerPoint students will get out their interactive notebooks
● We will go back through the slides to copy down bold words
● We will define each bold word found in the slides
● Students will draw pictures that match each cycle
● They will cut and paste this worksheet into their interactive notebooks to
draw the pictures

● I will read this poem about a raindrop

● I will hand each student a water cycle worksheet

● The instructions say “Imagine you are a rain drop. Using transition words,
tell what would happen to you during each stage of the water cycle.”
● I will read the instructions to the class
● I will remind students that you are starting off as rain (precipitation) so
what stage would happen next
● Students can begin working silently
Summary
● To close the lesson, students can share what they wrote
● Everyone can provide feedback
● After someone shares, we will pick out the transition words that they used
● I will collect everyone’s paper for an exit ticket and participation grade

Materials needed for the lesson

● BrainPop video
● Computer
● PowerPoint
● Interactive notebooks
● Pencils
● Crayons

Differentiation/extension:
● To differentiate the lesson, students can use their interactive notebooks to
help them fill in their raindrop worksheet. I can even have the water cycle
written/drawn on the board for them to look at while they complete their
classwork.
● To extend the lesson, students can complete a water cycle wheel.
● They have to cut this out, color it, and put it together
Evaluation Part A:
● Writing the correct definitions in their interactive notebooks
● Student’s writing of the water cycle

Evaluation Part B: (Post-lesson assessment and reflection of the lesson to be completed after
the lesson has been taught)
Did the students meet your objectives?
How do you know?
Did your lesson accommodate/address the needs of all your learners?
What were the strengths of the lesson?
What were the weaknesses?
How would you change the lesson if you could teach it again?
