Introduction
Welcome to BookCash – your step-by-step guide to writing a short book that
can generate fast profits with and without the help of AI…

And do so ethically and responsibly!

Doing it this way will mean that your book will not only sell better but will also
never be flagged by a platform or even turned down by a publisher, if you want
to go the traditional route.

That said, this system is ideal for self-publishers as you can opt for multiple
platforms and formats to maximise your revenue…and yes, I give you ideas for
that too.

If you're a beginner writer or a marketer looking to break into the publishing

world, this course is perfect for you.

By the end of it, you'll know how to create and market a book that provides
value to readers while generating consistent sales…

And you’ll be able to do it faster and easier than ever using a proven process.

You’ll also know precisely what kind of book to write because I am giving you a
tried and tested bestseller formula:

The How-To

8
Amanda Craven TrustyMarketer.com
Why A How-To Book?
Simple – it’s an easy format for anyone to follow and these books are
consistently popular. Short how-to book usually range from 15,000 to 30,000
words and have gained popularity due to their concise, easy-to-digest format.

People love how-to books because they solve problems, specifically their
problems which is what makes them perfect for anyone who wants to use their
books as the foundation for courses, talks, workshops, coaching…

And anything else you can think of that will not only give you limitless earning
potential but serve your audience with exactly what they want.

This is why it’s so important to hit on the right topic for your how-to book and
to think high concept all the way. Ideally, you want to write on a subject you
are knowledgeable and passionate about, but you also need to ensure there's
a demand for that topic.

You want a Big Idea. A hook for your book.

That holds true whatever format you use to write your book. It’s been the
basis of my success and I know it can be the basis of yours too.

But how do you find that Big Idea or hook?

Again, simple.

Especially when we’re talking about nonfiction.

9
Amanda Craven TrustyMarketer.com
Finding Your Big Idea
First, you do these three things, using the space provided in your workbook.

• List your areas of expertise or knowledge.

• Identify your passions and interests.

• Explore current trends and popular topics.

Once you’ve done that, you’ll have a better idea of the topics and expertise
you can cover and convey through your how-to book.

Let’s now go deeper as well as exploring ways you can use AI and other
resources to help with some of that…

Especially finding that all-important hook for your book!

10
Amanda Craven TrustyMarketer.com
Identifying Your Expertise, Knowledge, Passions &
Interests

Everyone knows something they can teach to another person. You don’t have
to be a world class expert or innovator to provide solutions to other people’s
problems or to fulfil their needs.

You don’t even have to be original or reinvent the wheel.

You simply have to add unique value with your own experience, voice and
knowledge.

To do that the BookCash way, you take a book that’s already a proven
bestseller and add your own twist to it.

Note that I’m not suggesting you plagiarize or do anything unethical – merely
that you use that book for inspiration.

How do you find those proven bestsellers?

With a quick Google, you’ll find a list like this:

https://www.booklistqueen.com/the-new-york-times-nonfiction-best-sellers/

Look at that list and especially at the titles. They’re emotive, provocative,
anything but mediocre, bland or me-too…

And that’s exactly what you need to do. In whatever niche or genre you want
to write.

11
Amanda Craven TrustyMarketer.com
The formats I’ve chosen for you make that extra simple because essentially you
are solving a problem in either a how-to or list format…

So all you need to do is identify that problem and how you’re going to solve it
in as enticing or intriguing a manner as possible.

You can either do that by getting inspiration from lists such as the one above
or you can use ChatGPT to do the heavy lifting for you.

Here’s how I do it…

An AI Hook For Your Book

My method comes up not just with a hook for your book but an entire concept
that you can tweak or use as inspiration, applying it to your own topic.

What I do first is choose an author whose work allies with that topic. In this
example, I’ve chosen Tim Ferriss because he’s a big name in the online space
as well as a bestselling author.

Here’s the first prompt I fed to ChatGPT:

“You are the author Tim Ferriss. Come up with an idea for your next bestselling
book”

14
Amanda Craven TrustyMarketer.com
Where’s the hook? In that final paragraph. ‘ It’s not just a book, it’s a roadmap
for readers to transform their lives, redefine their limits, and achieve
extraordinary results.’

Let’s try another example, this time by Googling ‘nonfiction best sellers 2023’ I
pull out what look like the three most interesting first page results:

https://www.stylist.co.uk/books/25-non-fiction-books-you-cant-miss-in-
2023/738972

https://www.waterstones.com/blog/the-non-fiction-you-need-to-read-in-
2023-july-december

That should give me a broad selection to choose from which might ally with my
own interests and expertise.

Top tip – try and always choose a topic you already know something about,
especially if you are going to be using AI as a writing assistant. That way, you
don’t need to spend additional time researching and fact checking beyond the
bare minimum.

From the Men’s Health list, I picked Jenny Odell’s book Saving Time because I
have already written extensively on productivity and work-life balance.

Here’s the prompt I entered:

15
Amanda Craven TrustyMarketer.com
“You are the author Jenny Odell. Come up with an idea for your next
bestselling book based on how to achieve a better work-life balance while
increasing your productivity and leisure time”

exercises, and thought-provoking insights, readers will learn how to reclaim
their time, nurture their passions, and rediscover the joy of simply being. This
book is a call to embrace the art of stillness, leading to a more harmonious and
fulfilling existence.

Personally, I love the second version more so that’s the one I would go with.

I much prefer to work like this than to go looking for a niche that I may or may
not know anything about.

For one thing, the books listed in the results I’ve shown you have already been
put through the laborious process of deciding whether or not they will be
profitable and preferably bestsellers by a commissioning team.

No publisher is going to waste their money and effort on a title, especially not
in these fiercely competitive days, unless they have already done their
research and decided it’s worth the risk. And it’s always a risk – you mitigate it
by doing that due diligence.

Or rather, in this case by profiting from the publishers who have already done
it for you.

20
Amanda Craven TrustyMarketer.com
Remember these are just ideas – you can’t simply swipe someone else’s idea
wholesale. It wouldn’t just be unethical, it would be downright stupid as
publishers speed dial their lawyers.

Do it the way I’ve shown you here, check the results to make sure you’re not
just swiping wholesale and then apply what you get to your own ideas,
knowledge and interests knowing that you can be reasonably certain you have
a surefire winner.

Once I have that winner, I then think about whether or not I can maximise it by
turning it into courses, workshops, live VIP days and anything else I want to do
to bring in multiple streams of revenue.

In both the examples I have given you here, there is plenty of potential for just
that.

21
Amanda Craven TrustyMarketer.com
Identify Your Target Audience
Now that you have a topic, or several, for your book, it’s time to identify who
exactly would want to read that book, i.e. your target audience.

Before you start writing, it's essential to understand who your target audience
is. Ask yourself, "Who would find my book useful?" Identify the demographics,
interests, and pain points of your potential readers. Knowing your audience
will help you tailor your book to their needs and increase its appeal.

To help you identify that audience, ask yourself the following questions (you
can answer these in the space provided in your workbook):

Purpose and Content:

What problem does your book solve or what need does it address?

What key takeaways or skills can readers expect to gain from your book?

What is the main subject or theme of your book?

22
Amanda Craven TrustyMarketer.com
Demographics:

What age group will benefit most from your book?

Is your book more suitable for a particular gender?

Are there specific cultural or regional groups that might be especially

interested?

Psychographics:

What are the interests, hobbies, or values of your potential readers?

What kind of lifestyle do they lead?

Are they beginners, intermediates, or experts in the topic you're addressing?

Profession and Education:

Would professionals in a certain industry or field find your book particularly

beneficial?

Is there a specific educational background that would make someone more

interested in or receptive to your content?

23
Amanda Craven TrustyMarketer.com
Reading Habits:

Do your potential readers prefer long, detailed explanations, or are they

looking for quick, actionable tips?

Are they likely to read your book cover-to-cover or jump to specific sections?

Current Solutions:

What other books or resources currently exist on this topic, and how is yours
different or better?

What gaps in the existing market does your book fill?

Engagement and Community:

Are there online forums, communities, or social media groups where people
discuss topics related to your book?

Would your book be a good fit for workshops, seminars, or group discussions?

Price Point and Value:

How much are potential readers willing to pay for the information or skills
you're providing?

Do they view your topic as an investment in their personal or professional

growth?

24
Amanda Craven TrustyMarketer.com
Feedback and Validation:

Can you share a chapter or section with a group or beta readers to get
feedback?

Are there influencers or experts in the field that you can contact who could
provide endorsements or testimonials?

Book Format and Distribution:

Do your potential readers prefer print books, ebooks, or audiobooks?

Where do they typically buy or consume content (e.g., bookstores, online

platforms, libraries)?

To further define and narrow down your target audience, you can ask ChatGPT
to help you using the following prompts.

25
Amanda Craven TrustyMarketer.com
Target Audience Prompts
Here are some prompts you can give to ChatGPT to delve deeper into
identifying your target audience. When you input these prompts, be sure to
provide as much specific information about your book as possible for more
accurate feedback:

General Inquiry:

"Based on a how-to book about [Your Book's Topic], who might be the primary
target audience?"

Demographic Focus:

"For a book covering [Your Book's Specific Topic], what age group would be
most interested?"

"Considering a how-to guide on [Topic], would it appeal more to men, women,

or both? Why?"

Psychographic Insight:

"What kind of reader, in terms of interests and values, would be drawn to a

book about [Your Book's Subject]?"

26
Amanda Craven TrustyMarketer.com
Professional Relevance:

"Would professionals in the [Specific Industry or Field] find a book on [Your

Book's Topic] beneficial? Why or why not?"

Comparative Analysis:

"How does a how-to book on [Your Book's Topic] compare to other popular
books in the same niche? Who are their audiences?"

Skill Level Inquiry:

"For a guide on [Your Topic], would it be more suitable for beginners,

intermediates, or experts?"

Geographic and Cultural Relevance:

"Is my how-to book on [Topic] culturally or regionally specific? If so, which

cultures or regions would be most interested?"

Reading Style:

27
Amanda Craven TrustyMarketer.com
"Given a book that offers [specific features, e.g., "detailed explanations,"
"step-by-step guides," "personal anecdotes"], what type of reader would be
most attracted to this style?"

Feedback on Book Sections:

"I've written a section/chapter on [Specific Topic or Approach]. Who would this

resonate most with?"

Engagement and Community Potential:

"Which online communities or forums might be interested in a book about

[Your Topic]?"

Price and Value Evaluation:

"Considering the depth and scope of my how-to guide on [Topic], what might
be an appropriate price point? And who would see value in this?"

By giving ChatGPT these prompts including specific details about your book,
you can gain insights and perspectives on potential target audiences.

ChatGPT can also help you identify specific demographics or segments within a
niche. For instance, you can ask ChatGPT to suggest niche ideas tailored to a

28
Amanda Craven TrustyMarketer.com
specific age group, profession, or interest. You might even discover niche
markets or reader segments you hadn't previously considered.

29
Amanda Craven TrustyMarketer.com
Keyword Research
Keyword research is another vital aspect of market research you should
undertake in order to have a bestselling book.

On Amazon, keywords can make the difference between your book being
discoverable or lost among millions of others. There are plenty of free
keyword research tools you can use including Ahrefs, KDT, KeywordTool,
UberSuggest, and SEMrush.

Here’s a step by step guide to using these and other tools for Amazon keyword
research the way I like to do it.

1. Understand Your Book's Core Themes and Topics

Before diving into keyword research, have a clear understanding of your book's
main themes, topics, and the value it offers readers. This will help you
brainstorm initial keyword ideas.

2. Start with Amazon's Search Bar

Amazon's search bar can be a straightforward way to find keyword ideas.

Begin typing a word related to your book's topic.

30
Amanda Craven TrustyMarketer.com
Notice the autofill suggestions. These are terms that users frequently search
for.

Note down relevant suggestions.

3. Use Amazon's Category Listings

Explore categories related to your book on Amazon.

Check out the "Best Sellers" and "New Releases" in relevant categories.

Look at book titles, subtitles, and descriptions to identify commonly used

keywords.

4. Analyze Competing and Similar Books

Identify top-selling books in your niche.

Look at their titles, subtitles, and descriptions.

Note down any recurring keywords or phrases.

Check out their reviews. Sometimes readers will mention what they were
looking for in a book, offering keyword clues.

5. Leverage Keyword Research Tools

In addition to the free tools I have already mentioned, these can also help with
Amazon keyword research
31
Amanda Craven TrustyMarketer.com
Publisher Rocket (formerly KDP Rocket): This is a dedicated (paid) tool for
Amazon authors, providing keyword suggestions, competition scores, and
estimated Amazon searches per month. I absolutely love it and wouldn’t be
without it.

AMZ Suggestion Expander: A free Chrome extension that offers an expanded

view of Amazon's autofill suggestions.

Kindle Keyword Tool: Provides keyword suggestions based on Amazon data.

Google's Keyword Planner: While not Amazon-specific, it can provide insights

into what terms people are searching for.

6. Consider Long-Tail Keywords

Instead of just focusing on broad terms, think about more specific, longer
phrases.

These often have less competition and a more targeted audience.

For example, instead of "self-help", consider "self-help for overcoming

childhood trauma".

7. Prioritize Relevance

While it's tempting to choose keywords with high search volume, relevance is
crucial.

32
Amanda Craven TrustyMarketer.com
Ensure that chosen keywords accurately represent your book's content.

Misleading readers with unrelated keywords can lead to poor reviews and
reduced sales in the long run.

8. Incorporate Keywords Naturally

When you've identified the best keywords:

Integrate them into your book's title, subtitle, and description.

Ensure they flow naturally and don't feel forced.

9. Monitor and Adjust

Keyword trends can change over time.

Periodically review your keywords and see if they're still effective.

Consider updating your book's metadata (title, subtitle, description) if you

identify stronger keywords later.

10. Beyond Keywords: Other Factors for a Bestseller

While keywords are essential for discoverability, you also need to…

Ensure your book cover is professional and appealing.

Gather early reviews from genuine readers.

33
Amanda Craven TrustyMarketer.com
Consider running Amazon ads or promotions to boost visibility.

Remember, the goal of keyword research is to ensure your book gets in front
of the right audience: readers who will find genuine value in your content. By
combining effective keyword research with quality content and strategic
marketing, you'll be on your way to a bestseller.

34
Amanda Craven TrustyMarketer.com
What If You Have No Idea?
But what if you simply can’t think of an idea in spite of all that research? Or
you have too many and can’t decide on the right one?

Again, you can do this old school by following the steps in your workbook or
you can do it with the assistance of ChatGPT like this…

Idea Generation With AI

Here's how ChatGPT can help you come up with some great ideas for your
nonfiction book:

1. Brainstorming Session

Just spill out some areas you're passionate about or topics you have a wee bit
of knowledge in. ChatGPT can help bounce ideas around with you. It's like
having a brainstorming session with a friend... just that it’s a bit more "digital"
and doesn't need coffee breaks.

35

2. Trending Topics

Ask ChatGPT about the latest trends in various fields, like tech, health, finance,
or lifestyle. ChatGPT is now pretty updated (until 2022, at least), so can give
you a rundown of what's been buzzing.

3. Gap Analysis

Tell ChatGPT about popular books or topics you know of, and it can help
identify gaps or areas that haven't been explored in-depth. Think of it as
finding a niche within a niche. Sometimes, the best ideas are in the
intersections!

4. Deep Dives

Got a topic that's a tiny seedling of an idea? You and ChatGPT can deep dive
together! ChatGPT can provide facts, stats, or related concepts that can help
flesh out that idea.

5. Cross-Pollination

Why stick to one field? Share two seemingly unrelated interests, and ChatGPT
might be able to help you find connections between them. It's like making a
delightful new recipe by combining two of your favorite dishes!

36
Amanda Craven TrustyMarketer.com
6. The "What If" Game

Pose some "what if" questions to ChatGPT. They're great for exploring
hypothetical scenarios. "What if humans could photosynthesize?" or "What if
the internet never existed?" Playing with ideas can lead to some pretty
fascinating topics.

7. Feedback Loop

Jot down a few potential ideas or outlines, and ChatGPT can give you feedback
or expand on them. Sometimes, you just need a sounding board, and ChatGPT
is all ears! (Well, all algorithms, but you get what I mean.)

8. Audience Insights

Not sure who'd read your book? You can chat with ChatGPT about potential
target audiences and tailor your topic to their interests and needs. After all,
knowing your readers is half the battle.

9. The "Wild Card"

Feeling adventurous? Ask ChatGPT for a completely random fact or topic.

Sometimes, the most unexpected nuggets can spark the most brilliant ideas!

37

More Ways To Brainstorm With
ChatGPT
Let’s now dive deeper into more ways ChatGPT can help with your research so
you can come up with an idea for a book you know will be a bestseller.

1. Trending Topics

You can use ChatGPT to research trending topics, insights, or emerging

technologies.

Ask questions like:

• "What are the latest trends in [industry/field]?"

• "Can you summarize the current challenges facing [target audience]?"

2. Idea Generation

Start with broad themes related to your purpose/general topic and

audience. If you’re targeting entrepreneurs, themes might be 'productivity',
'networking', 'innovation'. With your chosen theme:

Ask ChatGPT: "What are some unique angles or untapped areas related to
[theme]?"

42
Amanda Craven TrustyMarketer.com
3. Dive deeper with follow-up questions like, “How have these angles
impacted [target audience]?”

4. Refine and Validate

Once you have a list of ideas:

Use ChatGPT for Validation. Ask: "What's been written on [specific idea]
in the past five years?" to ensure your concept is fresh.

Once you’ve done that, it’s time to take it on to the next step which is planning
and outlining your book.

43

Planning & Outlining Your Book

Old-School Planning
Before even diving into writing, you'll want to have a solid plan. If you’ve
followed the process here, you should already have the answers to the first
two questions and enough information for the third.

What's the book's main idea?

Who is the target audience?

What are the chapters going to be?

Create an outline to answer these questions. This not only acts as a roadmap
but also helps you maintain focus throughout the journey.

You can do this by completing the relevant section in your workbook and then
using that as your writing roadmap.

By creating and following an outline, you will be able to write your book much
faster as it’s simply a case then of filling it in. You can either do that the old
school way too or use AI as your assistant.

44
Amanda Craven TrustyMarketer.com
How To Outline Your Book
Creating a clear and logical outline is essential for organizing your book. It’s the
best way I know to ensure you write fast and with clarity so that your readers
can easily absorb and understand what you have to say.

Here's a step-by-step guide to help you create an effective outline:

1. Define the Main Topics:

Identify the main topics or themes you want to cover in your book. These are
the broad areas that encompass the knowledge or skills you aim to share with
your readers. For example, if you're writing a book on photography, your main
topics might include camera basics, composition techniques, lighting, and post-
processing.

2. Brainstorm Subtopics:

Under each main topic, brainstorm subtopics or subcategories that further

break down the content. These subtopics should cover specific aspects or steps
related to the main topic. Using the photography example, under the main
topic of camera basics, you might have subtopics like camera types,
understanding exposure, focusing techniques, and choosing lenses.

45
Amanda Craven TrustyMarketer.com
3. Order and Prioritize:

Think about the logical order in which the topics should be presented. Arrange
them in a sequence that makes sense and allows for a progressive learning
experience. It's generally best to start with foundational topics before moving
on to more advanced or specialized ones. Prioritize the subtopics within each
main topic based on their importance and relevance.

4. Craft an Engaging Introduction:

Your introduction sets the tone for your book and should grab readers'
attention right from the start. Begin with your engaging hook that sparks
curiosity or piques their interest. You can use a compelling anecdote, a
thought-provoking question, a surprising fact, or a relatable story to draw
readers in.

In the introduction, also establish the relevance of the topic and explain why
readers should care about it. Highlight the benefits they'll gain from reading
your book, how it can solve their problems or fulfill their needs. This helps
create a strong connection between the reader and the content, setting the
stage for the rest of the book.

5. Organize Content into Chapters or Sections:

Divide your book into chapters or sections based on the main topics and
subtopics you've identified. Each chapter should focus on one key aspect or

46
Amanda Craven TrustyMarketer.com
step related to the main topic. This helps maintain clarity and allows readers to
grasp the information in manageable chunks.

Ensure that there is a logical flow between the chapters or sections, with each
one building upon the previous one. Think about the natural progression of the
content and arrange the chapters in a way that facilitates understanding and
learning.

6. Create Subheadings and Subsections:

Within each chapter or section, create subheadings to further organize the

content. Subheadings act as signposts for readers, indicating what specific
aspect or step will be covered next. They also make it easier for readers to
navigate through the book and find the information they need.

If necessary, divide the content into subsections under each subheading to

provide even more structure and clarity. This allows for a more detailed
breakdown of the information and helps readers locate specific points of
interest.

7. Review and Refine the Outline:

Once you've created the initial outline, review it to ensure it flows logically and
covers all the necessary content. Look for any gaps or areas that need further
development. Consider the balance between chapters and sections, making
sure they're evenly distributed and provide a comprehensive overview of the
topic.

47
Amanda Craven TrustyMarketer.com
Refine the outline as needed, making adjustments or additions to strengthen
the structure and organization of the book. The outline serves as your
roadmap, guiding you throughout the writing process and keeping your
content focused and coherent.

Remember, a clear and logical outline sets the foundation for a well-structured
book. It helps you maintain a smooth flow of information, ensures all key
aspects are covered, and makes it easier for readers to follow along and absorb
the content. This in turn means that they will feel able to put it into action
which ensures great feedback for you.

AI-Assisted Planning
ChatGPT can be a fantastic resource for planning your book or even creating
outlines. This is a multi-step process which involves refining the output you get
with relevant prompts until you get the desired result.

You might ask the AI to generate an outline based on a brief description of

your book's concept, or consult it for targeted suggestions on individual
chapters or topics.

Here's how ChatGPT can assist you in this process:

1. Main Topics and Subtopics: By discussing the general theme and scope

brainstorm relevant examples, case studies, or anecdotes that can illustrate
and reinforce your points. By discussing the main ideas you want to convey,
ChatGPT can generate examples that add depth and credibility to your content,
making it more engaging and relatable for readers.

6. Key Takeaways and Summaries: ChatGPT can assist you in identifying

key takeaways or summaries at the end of chapters or sections. By discussing
the main messages or lessons you want readers to grasp, ChatGPT can help
you formulate concise summaries that reinforce the key points and provide a
quick recap of the information covered.

Let’s Get Writing!
Now comes the fun part: writing. Don’t get too hung up on making it perfect
on the first go. Just start blabbering away on your keyboard. Let your
personality shine! If you’re funny, be funny. If you’re sarcastic, let that sass
out. Remember, informal and chatty is the way to go.

This is where you turn caffeine and keyboard clicks into written gold. So let’s
get those fingers tapping…

We’ll start old school and then add ways that AI can become your writing
assistant so we’re keeping it ethical all the way.

Getting Started

Create Your Writing Haven: Find a cozy spot where your thoughts can flow like
a lazy river. This could be a quiet room, a bustling café (if you’re the type who
likes a little background noise), or even a park bench.

Set the Mood: Some like it silent; others prefer the soft hum of music.
Whatever tickles your fancy, get it set up. If you need a little background noise,
lo-fi beats or nature sounds can be just the ticket.

56
Amanda Craven TrustyMarketer.com
Equipment Check: Make sure you’ve got everything you need. Laptop fully
charged? Check. Notepad for scribbling down side-thoughts? Got it. A drink to
keep hydrated? Absolutely.

The Actual Writing Part

Daily Goals: Set a word count goal for each day. Something manageable – no
need to aim for a "War and Peace" every time you sit down.

Just Write: Don’t be paralyzed by perfectionism. The first draft is about getting
the clay on the wheel, not sculpting a masterpiece. Write first, edit later.

Chunk It Down: Tackle your outline one section at a time. Think of each
chapter as its own mini how-to article. It’s less daunting that way.

Use a Friendly Tone: Imagine you’re explaining your topic to a friend. Use
“you” to make it personal and direct. Crack a joke here and there, if that’s your
style. Keep it light and conversational.

57
Amanda Craven TrustyMarketer.com
Be Clear and Concise: Since it’s a how-to book, clarity is king. Write as if you’re
giving directions to someone who’s lost. No one wants to take a detour
through fluff-ville.

Add Stories and Anecdotes: Sprinkle in personal stories or anecdotes to

illustrate points. It’s like adding herbs to a dish – it just makes everything more
flavorful.

Use Active Voice: “You will turn the screwdriver” is a yawn. “Turn the
screwdriver” is a command. See the difference? Active voice adds energy to
your writing.

Include Actionable Steps: After explaining a concept, give the reader an action
to complete. It's like saying, “Don't just sit there; do something!”

Keeping the Momentum

Writing Sprints: Work in short bursts – say, 25 minutes, followed by a 5-minute
break. It’s like interval training for your brain.

Track Your Progress: Keep a log or a spreadsheet. Watching those word counts
grow is more addictive than the last cookie in the jar.

58
Amanda Craven TrustyMarketer.com
Overcome Writer's Block
Take a break. A short walk or a change of scenery can unclog the brain pipes.

Write out of order. If you’re stuck on a chapter, move to another one. It’s like
choosing a different path on a hike.

Talk it out. Sometimes saying things out loud can break the dam.

After the Session

Reflect: After a writing session, take a few moments to jot down what worked
and what didn’t. Being reflective can help you tweak your process for the
better.

Reward Yourself: Did you hit your word count? Reward yourself! It can be
something small like a piece of chocolate or a fist pump. Celebrate the wins.

Stay Flexible: Some days the words will flow; other days, they’ll trickle. It’s all
part of the process. Don’t get discouraged. Be like water and adjust.

Remember, writing a how-to book is not just about dumping what’s in your
brain onto paper; it’s about transferring your passion to the reader in a way
that's engaging and helpful.

And who knows? Your words might just be the nudge someone needed to
change their life. So keep at it, one word at a time!

How To Use ChatGPT As Your Writing
Assistant

Let’s now delve into how your AI sidekick (that’s ChatGPT) can swoop in like a
superhero and assist you with Step 5 – the actual writing of your how-to book.

Using ChatGPT for Writing Your How-To Book

Idea Generation and Brainstorming

Ask for Ideas: If you’re stuck on a topic or a chapter title, ChatGPT can help you
brainstorm. Just give it the gist of what you’re aiming for, and it will throw
some ideas back at you.

Writing Content

First Drafts: Tell ChatGPT what you want to cover in a chapter, and it will whip
up a first draft. It may not be perfect, but it’ll give you a starting point.

Sample Paragraphs: Need an example of a chatty, informative paragraph?

ChatGPT can craft one for you. You can then emulate that style or tweak it as
needed.

60
Amanda Craven TrustyMarketer.com
Dialogue and Anecdotes: Struggling to make your writing more engaging?
ChatGPT can generate some conversational elements or fun anecdotes related
to your topic.

Action Steps: After explaining a concept, ChatGPT can help create actionable
steps for the reader to follow, making sure each explanation ends with an
invitation to act.

Editing and Refining

Rewording for Clarity: If a section you’ve written feels muddy, paste it in

ChatGPT, and it can offer a clearer version.

Active Voice Conversion: Got a passive sentence? ChatGPT can help rephrase it
into an active one to add punch to your prose.

Grammar and Punctuation: While ChatGPT is not a replacement for a

professional human editor, it can certainly help tidy up your grammar and
punctuation.

Overcoming Writer’s Block

Prompting: If you’re staring at a blank page, give ChatGPT a shout. It can

provide prompts to get your creative juices flowing.

Writing Exercises: Sometimes you just need to get the gears moving. ChatGPT

can help check basic facts within its training data up until the last update.

62
Amanda Craven TrustyMarketer.com
How to Interact with ChatGPT for Writing
Assistance

Be Specific with Requests: The more detailed you are about what you need,
the better ChatGPT can assist you. Instead of saying “Help me write,” say “Can
you provide an example of how to write an engaging introduction for a chapter
on urban gardening?”

Iterate: Use its responses as a starting point and ask for revisions or
expansions as needed. This process is collaborative.

Use ChatGPT as a Sounding Board: Bounce ideas off it. Sometimes just the act
of articulating your thoughts can provide clarity.

Incorporate Feedback: If you've received feedback from friends or editors,

share that with ChatGPT, and it can help incorporate their suggestions.

Stay Engaged: Keep the conversation going. Writing a book can be a marathon,
not a sprint, and ChatGPT is here for the long haul.

simplify it? [insert text]"

Remember, ChatGPT is like a Swiss Army knife for your writing process—useful
in many ways but it’s your hand guiding the tools.

Always keep in mind that anything generated by AI should be heavily edited

and reviewed. Originality is key - ensure that you're not just publishing auto-
generated content or, as I said at the beginning, you run the risk of being
penalized.

You’ll also find that your own voice resonates far better with your readers than
that generated by a machine. People want to learn from you, flaws and all. It
doesn’t have to be perfect. It just has to provide them with the solution they
want!

68
Amanda Craven TrustyMarketer.com
Revising & Refining
Refining and revising your manuscript is a vital part of the process, polishing
that rough diamond until it gleams.

If you’re doing this Old Skool, what I like to do is set the manuscript aside for a
few days and then look at it again with fresh eyes. This can make a real
difference. I also read bits aloud to see if they flow and ask trusted friends to
read some or all of it to make sure they understand it and that it works for
them.

I can’t emphasise enough how important it is not to put your book out there
until it’s truly ready. In this rush, rush, rush world you might feel compelled to
just slap it down and hit publish. Don’t. A few hours spent revising and
checking will pay off hugely in terms of happier, more satisfied readers and an
enhanced reputation for you.

Here's how to do this step by step…

1. First Read-Through

Take a Break: Before you start revising, put the manuscript away for a few days
or even a week to gain some distance.

Read Aloud: As you go through the text, read it aloud. This can help you catch
awkward phrases, run-on sentences, and other issues that might not be as
obvious when reading silently.

69
Amanda Craven TrustyMarketer.com
2. Big Picture Edits

Structure and Flow: Look at your book as a whole. Does the order of chapters
make sense? Is the information flowing logically from one section to the next?

Relevance and Depth: Ensure that all the content is relevant to your readers’
needs and offers enough depth. Cut out or consolidate sections that might be
repetitive or off-topic.

3. Chapter-by-Chapter Refinements

Opening and Closing: Each chapter should open with a hook to grab attention
and end with a call-to-action or a transition that leads to the next chapter.

Headings and Subheadings: These guide your reader through the text and
should be clear and descriptive.

4. Paragraph-Level Enhancements

Topic Sentences: Ensure that each paragraph opens with a sentence that tells
the reader what it will be about.

Clarity and Brevity: Look for ways to say things more simply. Use the active
voice and cut unnecessary words.

70

5. Sentence-Level Surgery

Variety in Sentence Structure: Avoid monotonous rhythm by mixing short,

punchy sentences with longer, more complex ones.

Strong Verbs and Nouns: Choose strong, specific verbs and nouns to convey
your points more powerfully.

6. Word Choice and Tone

Consistent Voice: Ensure that your writing voice remains consistent

throughout. Your tone should match the expectations you’ve set for your
reader.

Jargon and Technical Terms: Replace or explain jargon and technical terms
unless you’re sure your audience will understand them.

7. The Finer Points of Grammar and Syntax

Grammar Check: Go through the manuscript with a fine-tooth comb to catch

grammatical errors.

Punctuation: Ensure that your punctuation is correct and used consistently.

71
Amanda Craven TrustyMarketer.com
8. Facts and Accuracy

Fact-Check: Verify all your facts, statistics, and references. Even small
inaccuracies can compromise your credibility.

Sources and Permissions: If you have cited sources or used quotes, make sure
you have the proper permissions and that they’re correctly attributed.

9. Sensitivity Reading

Cultural Sensitivity: Ensure that your content is culturally sensitive and

inclusive. Consider hiring a sensitivity reader if you’re covering topics outside
your own experience.

10. Feedback from Others

Beta Readers: Get feedback from people within your target audience. Their
insights can be invaluable for understanding how your book will be received.

Professional Editors: If possible, hire a professional editor. They can catch

things you might have missed and provide expert advice on your manuscript’s
strengths and weaknesses.

72
Amanda Craven TrustyMarketer.com
11. Polishing Your Work

Final Proofread: After revisions, do a final proofread—or better yet, have

someone else do it.

Formatting and Design: Ensure that your manuscript’s formatting is consistent,

and consider professional design for the interior and cover of your book.

12. Implementing Changes

Track Changes: Use software that allows you to track changes so you can
review and accept or reject each edit. I use Microsoft Word but it’s your choice
– pick what you’re most comfortable using.

Iterative Revisions: Revise in waves, focusing on different elements each

time—content, clarity, grammar, etc.

Tips for a Productive Revision Process:

Set a Schedule: Allocate specific times for revising and stick to them.

Use Technology: Utilize writing tools and software for grammar checking and
style guidance, but don’t rely on them completely.

Stay Open-Minded: Be willing to make big changes if necessary. Sometimes

you need to rewrite large sections to get it right.

Revising is about more than just correcting mistakes; it's a creative process in
itself. It’s your opportunity to truly craft and sculpt your writing into something

73
Amanda Craven TrustyMarketer.com
that stands out and delivers your message with impact. Take your time and
treat each pass as an opportunity to add value to your how-to book.

Tips for Using ChatGPT in the Revision Process:

Be Iterative: Refining and revising is an iterative process. Use my feedback,

make changes, and then ask for further review.

Work in Manageable Chunks: Rather than sending large blocks of text, focus on
key sections for targeted feedback.

Utilize Version Control: Keep track of changes by saving different versions of

your manuscript. This way, you can always revert to an earlier draft if needed.

Incorporate Human Feedback: Use my suggestions as one part of your revision

process. Human editors and test readers provide invaluable insights that AI
currently can't replicate.

Remember, while ChatGPT can assist with many tasks, its abilities are based on
patterns and data up to its last training cut-off. For the most current trends,
data verification, or stylistic advice, supplementing with your own research and
expertise is always a good idea.

79

Design and Formatting
This is where your manuscript gets dressed for success—it's all about design
and formatting. This step ensures that your book isn't just informative but also
visually appealing and professional.

Understanding Design and Formatting

Importance of Professionalism: Your book's design is its first impression. A
professional look instills trust and credibility.

Consistency: Formatting should be consistent throughout the book—this

includes headers, footers, font choices, and paragraph styles.

Layout Design
Choose Your Tools: Decide whether you will use professional software like
Adobe InDesign, a simple word processor, or a self-publishing platform with
built-in formatting tools.

Trim Size: Determine the size of your book (e.g., 6"x9", 5.5"x8.5"). This affects
how much text fits on a page and impacts the layout.

Margins and Spacing: Set comfortable margins and line spacing. Margins that
are too small or too large can make a book difficult to read or awkward to
handle.
80
Amanda Craven TrustyMarketer.com
Fonts and Typography: Select fonts for headers and body text. Ensure they’re
legible and fit the tone of your content. Typically, serif fonts are used for print
body text, while sans-serif fonts work well for headers and digital formats.

Chapter Titles and Headings

Hierarchy: Use a clear hierarchy for chapter titles, headings, and subheadings.
Larger, bold fonts for titles and slightly smaller ones for subtitles work well.

Consistency: Maintain consistent styling for all headings and subheadings

throughout the book.

Front Matter and Back Matter

Front Matter: This includes the title page, copyright page, dedication,
foreword, table of contents, and preface. Each element serves a specific
purpose and should be formatted with care.

Back Matter: This can include an appendix, glossary, index, about the author
page, and calls to action such as inviting readers to join your mailing list.

Visual Elements
Images and Illustrations: If your book includes images, charts, or diagrams,
ensure they are high resolution and clearly labeled.

81
Amanda Craven TrustyMarketer.com
Captions: Provide clear captions and make sure they are formatted
consistently.

Text Boxes and Sidebars: Use these for additional information, but make sure
they are not distracting from the main text.

Page Numbers, Headers, and Footers

Page Numbers: Place page numbers consistently (e.g., bottom center or top
outer corners).

Headers/Footers: These can include the book title or chapter title on alternate
pages. Keep the styling simple and non-intrusive.

Technical Formatting
Digital Formats: If you’re also releasing an eBook, formatting needs to be
compatible with eReaders. Tools like Calibre or Kindle Create can help.

Print Specifications: For print books, follow the specifications provided by your
printer regarding file types, bleed, and so on.

Proofing and Prototyping

Proof Copy: Before finalizing, print a proof copy of your book. This allows you
to spot issues that aren't evident on-screen, like color differences or layout
inconsistencies.

82
Amanda Craven TrustyMarketer.com
Test on Devices: If releasing digitally, test how your book looks on various
devices to ensure compatibility and readability.

Tips for a Smooth Design Process

Start Early: Think about design early in the writing process—it can influence
how you organize your content.

Templates and Guides: Use templates and style guides to maintain consistency.
Many self-publishing platforms offer these for free.

Seek Feedback: Show your layout to peers or potential readers for feedback.
Fresh eyes can catch things you might have missed.

Professional Help: If design isn't your strong suit, consider hiring a professional
book designer. It can be a worthwhile investment.

Remember, the design and formatting stage is not merely an administrative

hurdle but an integral part of producing a how-to book that readers will enjoy
and recommend. A well-designed book can significantly enhance the reader's
experience and ensure that the valuable information you're providing is
accessible and engaging.

Gathering Feedback and Making
Improvements

Seeking feedback and incorporating it into your work can truly elevate the
quality of your book. You can gain from the perspectives of readers from your
target audience as well as professionals in the field.

Here's how to approach it…

Identifying Your Reviewers

Beta Readers: These are individuals from your target audience who read your
draft and give feedback from a reader's perspective. They can catch readability
issues, confusing content, and point out what they find most or least helpful.

Peer Reviewers: If you're writing on a technical or specialized topic, it's wise to

have experts in the field review your content for accuracy and
comprehensiveness.

Professional Editors: A professional editor can provide a level of feedback that

is often more technical and detailed. They can address issues of structure,
style, and consistency.

89
Amanda Craven TrustyMarketer.com
Gathering Feedback
Prepare Questions: Create a list of specific questions for your reviewers to
answer. This will guide them to provide the type of feedback you're looking
for.

Structured Feedback Forms: Develop a feedback form or survey. This can make
it easier for readers to provide structured and actionable feedback.

Reading Group Sessions: Organize a session where you can read parts of your
book to a group and get live feedback.

Managing Feedback
Collecting Responses: Organize feedback in a way that is manageable and
accessible. Use a digital tool to collect and sort the information.

Categorize Feedback: Sort feedback into categories: content, clarity, structure,

and mechanics (grammar, punctuation, etc.).

Avoid Overwhelm: It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by feedback. Remember that

not all feedback will be equally useful. Prioritize changes that align with your
book’s purpose and your vision as the author.

Analyzing Feedback
Look for Patterns: If multiple people point out the same or similar issues, those
are areas you definitely need to address.

90
Amanda Craven TrustyMarketer.com
Consider the Source: Weigh feedback based on the expertise and relevance of
the reviewer to your target audience.

Subjective vs. Objective: Separate subjective opinions from objective feedback

on technical aspects of your writing.

Incorporating Feedback
Actionable Plan: Create an action plan for revisions based on the feedback.
Tackle the most significant changes first, which might have a domino effect on
smaller issues.

Keep or Discard: Decide what feedback to keep and what to discard. Not all
advice will serve your book’s purpose or style.

Iterative Process: After making changes, you might want to go through another
round of feedback to ensure that your revisions work as intended.

Communicating with Reviewers

Clear Instructions: When you send out your manuscript for feedback, give clear
instructions on how you'd like feedback to be provided.

Gratitude: Always thank your reviewers for their time and insights, regardless
of whether you agree with their suggestions.

91
Amanda Craven TrustyMarketer.com
Follow-Up: If certain pieces of feedback are unclear, follow up with the
reviewer for clarification.

Tips for a Productive Feedback Process

Stay Objective: Try to detach yourself from the work and view feedback
objectively.

Be Open: Be open to criticism. It can be hard to hear, but it’s often the most
helpful.

Stay True to Your Vision: Ultimately, the book is yours. Make sure the final
product aligns with your goals and vision.

Track Changes: Use your word processor's 'Track Changes' feature to make it
easier to review and decide on each piece of feedback.

Document Revisions: Keep a log of the changes you make. This can be helpful if
you need to revisit why certain changes were made.

Remember, feedback is a gift that offers you the perspective you might not
have on your own work. It’s an indispensable part of writing a book that
resonates with readers and is therefore far more likely to become a bestseller.

Publishing and Marketing Your Book
Once you've written, designed, formatted, and revised your how-to book
based on feedback, you're moving toward the final steps of the process.

This final step is about publishing and marketing your book. Since this step can
be quite comprehensive, I’ll break it down into detailed sub-steps for you:

Publishing Your Book

literary agent and pitching to publishers, or self-publishing, where you have
more control and potentially a higher profit margin but also more
responsibility.

ISBN and Copyright:

If self-publishing, purchase an ISBN for your book. This number uniquely

identifies your book and is required for distribution.

Register your copyright to protect your intellectual property.

99

Order proof copies of your book to check for any last-minute errors or issues
with print quality.

Conclusion
By using AI responsibly and ethically, you can both write faster and better
while creating a book that you know will resonate with your target audience…

Which means it’s far more likely to become a bestseller.

You can also use ChatGPT to help with marketing and promoting your book as
well as coming up with great ideas to launch it online and off.

Ultimately, though, you can do all of these things without ChatGPT – it will just
take you a lot longer.

Your choice.

And your book.

Always remember to infuse it with your voice, your unique experiences and
insights and just more of you. In the end, that’s what sets your book
apart…readers can’t get you anywhere else.

So be brave, be bold and unleash yourself on the world.

I promise that the world will love you for it!
