Course Objective
Information Technology (IT) has become an indispensable part of doing business in today’s
environment. The least that is expected from a business manager today is the ability to use IT tools
such as Excel - for day-to-day business decision making in the most effective and productive manner.
There exist a number of IT-enabled tools which have become almost an integral part of the way
business decisions are made in almost all modern day organisations in all functional areas. It is
therefore crucial that the students of management, irrespective of their functional specialization, are
able to appreciate the concepts behind these tools and are capable of making use of these tools. The
objectives of the course on SSM are:

a) To familiarize the students with the basic concepts of spreadsheet modeling.


b) To provide them hands-on experience in using the common IT tools namely, MS EXCEL
c) To develop the ability to relate typical decision making situations in various functional areas of
management such as marketing, finance, operations and HR etc., with the well-known features
of Excel.
d) To enhance the capabilities of students to apply Excel in business decision making situations of
diverse kind.

Contents

Sessions Topics
1-2 An overview of MS EXCEL as a tool for data analysis – key features and capabilities;
getting hands-on with EXCEL: Absolute and Relative addressing, formatting and testing
your confidence level with MS EXCEL 2010
3-4 Excel Formulas, Functions ,Charts/Graphs and validation testing and filtering data with
application of business data for managerial decision making
5-6 Sensitivity Analysis with Data Tables; Using Scenario Manger for Sensitivity Analysis

7-8 Using Pivot Tables to Describe Data and working with data to make business decisions

9-10 Importing Data into Excel and linking data sheets; Using Solver to evaluate impact of
business decision
