______________________ Approval of Community Service Coordinator, Mr. Kirkman Guidelines

While Community Service refers to volunteering in the community on the whole, we want to be clear that what we seek is Community Service Learning. That is, we expect students to reflect back on their experience and process what they have learned. The form they submit to register the hours theyve served will require a short essay to achieve this step. The goal of developing a sense of communal responsibility beyond Colusa High Schools borders and learning from each experience guides all else in this policy. After completion of service the student must submit a letter from their supervisor. This signed letter will state the number of hours worked and the nature of the work. Affixed to this letter will be a typed essay of not less than 150 words in which the student describes what he or she has learned from the experience. Once the Community Service Coordinator, Mr. Kirkman, has signed a cover form approving the documentation, the students hours will be recorded as part of their Civics grade for the fall semester. Examples of such organizations include hospitals and certain private and corporate philanthropic endeavors. Approval should be secured before the student engages in the activity. Students must submit a typed proposal for the work explaining how they will be fulfilling a need that the beneficiary would find difficult to fulfill on his or her own. This proposal must be signed by the student and by the beneficiary of the service and include a contact number for that beneficiary. At the completion of service, the student will complete all of the standard requirements as would be expected. For hours spent on a Community Service Learning event with a faculty sponsor, the faculty sponsor may turn in a description and list of names that replaces the official letter. Any work performed with a religious organization must be secular in purpose to count towards this requirement. A student may not receive credit for paid work or work required of him or her by an academic class.
