Summary:
This Quickstart provides you the minimal steps to start up a communication with DeviceNet
devices. Additional troubleshooting information at the end of the Quickstart can help you to
troubleshoot your communication.
This Communication Quickstart completes the Product Quickstart that explains how to install
and use the product you have. Please read first the Product Quickstart.
1 How configure the applicomIO interface card

1.1 The Console description

The applicomIO console is the configuration tool that will be used to configure the
communication between the applicomIO interface card and the DeviceNet devices.

To start the configuration Console click on the button in the applicom directory:

define
Channels • Protocol parameters
available to • Equipment list and
define the parameters
protocols used

Library of
equipments to add
in the active
configuration

Loggin area to see

warning and error
messages during Status
the configuration • Board configured
• Board status
• Configuration status

1.2 Select and setup the communication interface

Specify the interface communication card

installed on the PC.
- Right Click on “Board configuration”
- Select “add board”
- The card installed in the PC should be
automatically detected, click OK.

1.3 Configure the protocol

Select the “DeviceNet, Master/Slave” protocol available now under the applicomIO card.
The right area will allow you to configure the communication with the devices.
Configure now the DeviceNet communication properties, by a double click on “DeviceNet
Master” channel.

Baud Rate: Select the DeviceNet

communication Baud Rate, one unique
Baud Rate for the complete network.
MAC ID: Define the MAC ID of the
applicomIO card.

Chapter 6. Step by step Implementation

1.3 Add new equipment EDS files

The Equipment EDS file

describes the functionalities and
object dictionary supported by the
Equipment.
It is important to get the EDS file
from the device manufacturer and
to insert it in the EDS library of
the applicomIO console.

1.4 Scan the DeviceNet network for installed devices

The applicomIO solution provides you the possibility to scan the network and get the pre-
configured list of all the connected devices.

- On the left bottom side of the

applicomIO console select the
Network Detection tab.
- Click on the Read Network
Configuration button.
- Adapt the BaudRate and MAC ID.
- Click on OK.
The scan will be performed and the detected
devices displayed.

1.5 Insert devices from the scanned devices list

The scanned devices are detected by the applicomIO console. They are then associated with
the corresponding EDS file inserted in our EDS library and are pre-configured.
Insert the detected devices via a Drag & Drop into the right area of the console. No further
configuration should be requested. Verify that the configuration proposed correspond to your
real network and confirm.

Verify the scanned information:

- MAC ID of the slave device
- IO size and communication
mechanism

Parameters can also be sent to the

remote device to configure its
behavior. These parameters depend
on the device supported features.
Adapt directly the parameters in the
list and exchange the values through
the buttons Read and Write from the
device.

1.6 Add devices Manually via EDS files

If the DeviceNet device is not connected to the network you can also insert manually the
device in the configuration via the EDS library (see the previous chapter how to add new
equipment EDS files in the EDS library).

Drag & Drop your device from the Library to the right configuration area and configure all
parameters listed previously.

1.7 Configure the DeviceNet Local slave feature

The applicomIO card can also be configured as a DeviceNet Slave / Adapter to exchange IO
data with a remote scanner. This option can be used with or without the master configuration
to remote IO devices.
To add this feature, double click on the DeviceNet Local Slave line.

Equipment: define a symbolic

number for this local slave to
access to it via the applicomIO
interfaces.
Connection Configuration: select
the wished communication mode
and adapt the IO sizes
EDS viewer: an EDS file is
automatically generated in the
directory of your applicomIO
configuration project. Use this file to
configure the remote DeviceNet
scanner.

2 Check the communication with your equipments

Initialize the communication solution with the following button in order to update the
configuration in your card.
Use the diagnostic tool to check if the connection with the remote slave is running and
test the IO communication.
