Biology 101: Photosynthesis Class Notes2

Lecture Date: October 20, 2023

Professor: Dr. Greenfield

Key Concept: Photosynthesis is the process by which green plants, algae, and some bacteria
convert sunlight into chemical energy. This energy is stored as sugars, which serve as fuel
for the plant's growth.

1. Overview
- Photosynthesis occurs in the chloroplasts of plant cells.
- Primary reactants: CO₂ (carbon dioxide), H₂O (water), and sunlight.
- Key products: Glucose (C₆H₁₂O₆) and Oxygen (O₂).

2. Stages of Photosynthesis
- Light-dependent reactions: Take place in the thylakoid membrane and produce ATP and
NADPH.
- Calvin Cycle (light-independent): Occurs in the stroma, where CO₂ is used to create
glucose.

Equation:
6CO₂ + 6H₂O + light energy → C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂

3. Importance of Photosynthesis
- Photosynthesis is fundamental for life on Earth as it produces oxygen and forms the basis
of most food chains.
