Reading
J Five sentences have been removed from the blog entry. Choose from the sentences A-H the one
which fills each gap (1-5). There are three extra sentences which you do not need to use.

Hi everyone! 1 I’m from the Cook Islands in the Pacific Ocean, but I’m studying in the UK, so
it happens to me quite a lot!

If you read my blog regularly, you know that I go to university in the UK’s capital city, London. I’ve
been here for more than two years now, and I feel right at home. People have always been kind
and welcoming. Even during my first week at university, I met a lot of people. 2 As we got to
know each other better, we invited each other into our rooms to play computer games, watch films
or TV shows, study together, or just chat.
Every time I went into someone’s room, I always took my shoes off. 3 However, the first time
a friend came to my room to study, he didn’t take his shoes off! I was shocked and I thought that
perhaps we weren’t very good friends after all.
“Please,” I said at last, “would you mind taking your shoes off?”
“Uh, sure, mate,” he said. “Have you just vacuumed the carpet or something?”
4 If you don’t, it means you don’t respect the person that lives there.
“Oh, sorry,” he said. “I had no idea! Of course I respect you, but here in the UK, we don’t usually
take our shoes off when we’re visiting someone.”
Those kind of cultural differences are important to know about. It’s only a small thing, but because
my friend didn’t take his shoes off, I almost thought he didn’t like me. 5 Now, a year later,
we’re best friends!

A In the Cook Islands, it’s rude to go into other people’s homes with your shoes on.
B It was difficult for him to understand the culture and the customs.
C I explained that, in my country, it’s polite to remove your shoes before going into someone’s home.
D Luckily, we cleared up the misunderstanding.
E It’s strange being in a new place, but exciting to learn new things.
F We were all staying in university accommodation, so we each had a room in a big building.
G I’m normally quite shy, but not this time.
H Have you ever experienced a cultural misunderstanding?
