Escherichia coli (E. coli)

Taxonomic Classification

Beneficial Effects

Harmful Effects

Diseases caused by E. coli

WHAT IS ESCHERICHIA COLI (E. COLI)?
Gram-negative, short rod-shaped bacteria and
members of the family Enterobacteriaceae
Commonly found in the lower intestine of
warm-blooded organisms
Coli, means “from the colon”
Have both pathogenic and nonpathogenic
strains
TAXONOMIC CLASSIFICATION

Domain: Bacteria

Kingdom: Eubacteria

Phylum: Proteobacteria
TAXONOMIC CLASSIFICATION

Class: Gammaproteobacteria

Order: Enterobacteriales

Family: Enterobacteriaceae
TAXONOMIC CLASSIFICATION

Genus: Escherichia

Species: E. coli
BENEFICIAL EFFECTS
Most E. coli are harmless and are part of a healthy
intestinal tract
Helps in digesting food, produce vitamins, and protect us
from harmful germs.
The presence of E. coli in the gut takes up space,
preventing harmful organisms from growing there.
E. coli can be used as a diagnostic tool to detect potential
food contamination in food and water making them safe
to consume
BENEFICIAL EFFECTS
It can help maintain the balance of normal intestinal
bacteria against harmful bacteria. They also aid in
production and synthesis of vitamins in the body.
Other E. coli strains are used by the researchers in
industry to produce important compounds we use
everyday.
It was found to help the body in absorbing iron and may
also improve therapeutics that aim to treat iron
deficiency.
HARMFUL EFFECTS
ETEC: (Enterotoxigenic E. coli) ETEC causes
diarrhea without fever.
EIEC: (Enteroinvasive E. coli) invades and
destroys cells lining the colon and causes
watery, dysentery-like diarrhea.
EPEC: (Enteropathogenic E. coli) causes
watery, sometimes bloody diarrhea.
HARMFUL EFFECTS
EAEC: (Enteroaggregative E. coli) EAEC strains
often cause prolonged diarrhea in children.
EHEC: (Enterohemorrhagic E. coli) produces a
poison called Shiga toxin.
DISEASES CAUSED BY E. COLI
Some E. coli can make people sick with diarrhea,
urinary tract infections, pneumonia, sepsis, and
other illnesses.
Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome can result from E. coli
infection that is caused by STEC which are strains
that produce Shiga toxins.
Neonatal meningitis is a rare condition and it is
usually acquired by newborns during birth.
DISEASES CAUSED BY E. COLI
Chronic Bacterial Prostatitis (CBP) usually doesn’t cause
any symptoms until the patient develops urinary tract
infection which is accompanied by symptoms including
dysuria, mild urgency, suprapubic, lower back, or
perineal pain, and increased frequency of urination.
Pneumonia caused by E. coli is a rare but serious
condition that can affect individuals of all ages.
E. coli may cause Cholecystitis in certain individuals.
