Mini Project: Self Curing Approaches for Cement Production

Introduction
Concrete curing is a critical process in construction that significantly impacts the
durability and strength of concrete structures. Proper curing is essential to ensure
the longevity and performance of concrete.

Curing techniques for concrete can be classified as

• External curing and
• Internal curing
External curing: External curing is a convention type of curing, where curing
happens from outside to inside by adding external water. There are different
methods in external curing such as
• Water curing
• Membrane curing
• Application of heat

Water curing: Water curing is the process where an uninterrupted flow of water is
carried out over the surface of the concrete. This is done so that there is no water
loss from the concrete surface.

Mini Project: Self Curing Approaches for Cement Production

Membrane curing: Membrane curing is a process that involves the application of a

liquid membrane-forming compound or covering with a protective sheet material,
both of which function as a barrier to restrict evaporation of mixing water from
concrete surfaces.

Heat curing : Typically the heat curing cycle consists of 3 to 5 hours precure
period followed by heating at a rate of 20 K/hour to a maximum temperature of 60
to 70 deg C.

Internal curing
Self-curing concrete is a type of concrete that uses water filled curing agent to
retain water and hydrate the cement.
This process helps to prevent
• water loss
• improve concrete’s durability
• crack resistance and
• reinforcement protection.
Self-curing concrete is used in situation where scarcity of water exists

Mini Project: Self Curing Approaches for Cement Production

Self-curing concrete is usually developed by using pre-wetted aggregates by

introducing some polymer in the concrete. These aggregates or polymers release
their moisture during the concrete's drying process, thereby supplying water to
cementing material for complete hydration.

The ACI-308 Code states that “internal curing refers to the process by which the
hydration of cement occurs because of the availability of additional internal water
that is not part of the mixing Water.”
In conventional method curing happens from outside to inside. In contrast in
internal curing is allowing for curing from ‘inside to outside’ through internal
reservoirs created.

Internal reservoirs are in the from of

• Light weight fine aggregates (such as Leca and Polyethylene-glycol, Silica
fume and stone chips)
• Superabsorbent polymers (Shrinkage Reducing Admixture: Polyethylene-
glycol, polyvinyl alcohol PVA)
• Or saturated wood fibres
• Bio Admixtures (Calatropis gigantean Spinanceaoleracia -palak)

6
Mini Project: Self Curing Approaches for Cement Production

Objectives:
• To reduce water quantity in curing periods.
• To study different techniques for self- curing concrete.
• To increase the compressive strength of concrete in self-curing approach.
• Comparing the Compressive strength of self-curing Concrete for 7 and 28
days with traditional concrete of similar mix design.
• RCPT, c-plaster, Pozzolanic activity

Necessity for self-curing concrete

In the construction industry, curing concrete requires a significant amount of water,
which can pose a challenge for sustainability efforts and construction in remote
areas with limited water resources.
To address these issues, self-curing concrete has emerged as a viable alternative to
traditional curing methods.
Self-curing concrete is a specialized solution that can address insufficient curing
caused by human negligence, water scarcity, and difficult terrains. Self-curing
agents such as water-soluble polymers and water retention polymers can be added
to concrete to reduce water evaporation and increase water retention capacity. This
eliminates the need for manual labour to provide water or external curing, while
producing concrete with comparable or even superior properties to conventionally
cured concrete.
Using self-curing admixtures is crucial as water resources become increasingly
valuable, with curing operations being a critical factor in developing the micro-
structure and pore structure of concrete for improved durability and performance.
