RESEARCH PLAN
Title: Exploring the Effectiveness of Coconut (Cocos Nucifera) Husk as a Natural
Oil Spill Absorbent
Name of Researcher: Pauline Nyce M. Miguel
School: Leuteboro National High School
School Address: Leuteboro, Socorro, Oriental Mindoro
A. Rationale
Oil spill is the release of liquid petroleum into the environment, particularly
marine areas, due to human activities. These spills can occur during the extraction,
transportation, or storage of oil and often lead to devastating environmental
consequences. The oil can spread rapidly over the water's surface, affecting marine life,
coastal ecosystems, and local economies.
According to Viju Subramoniapillai in 2021, using sorbent materials to recover
oil is a highly effective method that has garnered significant attention due to its efficiency
in cleanup efforts. Natural fibers, when compared to synthetic fibrous sorbents, present
numerous benefits for oil spill cleanups, such as being environmentally friendly,
biodegradable, and cost-efficient.
In this study, the researcher propose to determine the effectiveness of coconut
husk as a natural oil absorbent which will be more affordable, abundant in nature and
eco-friendly than other oil spill absorbent.
B. Statement of the Problem
The main purpose of the study is to provide an effective, affordable and eco-
friendly oil spill absorbent.
Specifically it will seek to answer the following questions:
1.Will the coconut husk be effective as an oil spill absorbent?
2.Is the coconut husk more affordable than other oil spill absorbent?
3.Will the coconut husk be eco-friendly?
C. Hypothesis
The researcher formulated the following hypothesis to be tested:
Alternative Hypothesis (HA)
1. The coconut husk is effective as an oil spill absorbent
2.The coconut husk is more affordable than the other oil spill absorbent
3.The coconut husk is eco-friendly
Null Hypothesis (HO)
1.The coconut husk is not effective as an oil spill absorbent
2.The coconut husk is not affordable than the other oil spill absorbent
3.The coconut husk is not eco-friendly
D. Goals/Objectives
General objectives:
This investigatory project is conducted to create a natural oil absorbent using coconut
husk that will benefit both people and the environment.
Specific Objectives:
1. To make a product that is effective in absorbing oil spillage
2. To create an affordable oil spill absorbent
3. To produce an eco-friendly oil spill absorbent
E. Methods and Procedure
Materials and Equipment
The tools that the researcher will use are coconut husk, durable netting material,
rope, measuring cup and scissors
General Procedures
For this experiment the researcher will prepare the materials that are needed. First,
chop 500 grams of coconut husks into smaller, manageable pieces. Next, cut the 1 meter
of net to your desired length. After that, stuff the coconut husk pieces into the netting.
Make sure to pack them tightly to maximize the absorbency. Then, use ropes to securely
close the ends of the net. Ensure they are tight enough to prevent the husks from
escaping. Lastly, place the product around the oil spill area. The coconut husk will help
absorb the oil, preventing it from spreading further.
F. Expected Result
The researcher anticipates that the product will achieve the intended properties
and functions. Furthermore, the researcher is also expecting to create an effective,
affordable and eco-friendly natural oil absorbent that will be helpful in our environment.
