1.0 SETUP

1.1 Convert final car design to STEP file (.stp)

1.2 Open Autodesk CFD software and create new file.

1.3 Browse the converted final car design and name the design study.

1.4 Go to Ext. Volume and create a wind tunnel box. Follow the steps shown:

Move the right arrow until the Move the left arrow until the Move the top arrow until the

2.0 MATERIALS

2.1 Go to Materials.

2.2 On the Design Study Bar, assigned the CFD Created Volume to air.

1) Right click on CFD Created Volume and click Edit

2) Follow the properties shown:

2.3 On the Design Study Bar, assigned other components to solid. Any material can be chosen as it
won’t affect the result.

1) Right Click on Unassigned material and click Edit.

3.0 BOUNDARY CONDITION

3.1 Go to Boundary Conditions.

3.2 Click the front part of the wind tunnel and click Edit.

3.3 Follow the following boundary condition:

3.4 Click the rear part of the wind tunnel and click Edit.

4.0 MESH SIZING

4.1 Go to Mesh Sizing.

4.2 Hide the wind tunnel by right clicking the Air Material.

4.3 Go to Edit and select Regions.

4.4 Click Add and redefine the mesh box approximately to the car size. Set the mesh size into 0.15.
Click OK after finish.

4.5 Click Auto-size to complete the mesh

5.0 SOLVE

5.1 Click Solve, set the iterations to 100 and click Solve again.

5.2 Wait until the analysis is finished by observing the convergence plot and iterations number.

5.3 If the convergence plot does not show any constant or stable graph, run the analysis again to get
more iterations. Hence, a stabilized analysis can be achieved.

6.0 RESULTS

6.1 Plane
1) Go to Parts, right click on Air and select Outline.

2) Go to Planes and click Add.

3) Click on the generated plane and click the icon shown:

4) Adjust the Plane Control as following:

6.2 Traces
1) Go to Traces and click Add.

2) Click 3 times on the plane at different points to make traces points in rectangular array. Points
orders are shown as below:

3) Edit the traces to get a better view of the airflow.

6.3 Static Pressure


1) Go to Global and change the Velocity Magnitude to Static Pressure.

6.5 Drag and Lift


1) Go to Wall Calculator.

2) Change model entity selection to Volume.

3) Click the Select All icon.

4) Click the Deselect Highlighted Items and click the wind tunnel.

5) Tick the Force box and change the unit to Newton. Click Calculate to find drag and lift.

6) Scroll down to find the summary of the analysis.
