Hydrological Modeling Using GIS

Project_8

Watershed Delineation Map

Mohammed G. Mohammed, Ph.D., University of Salahaddin-Erbil

Abstract

This project is to prepare the watershed delineation map (Part 1) for Kosinjaq City in Erbil and
also learn how to use Hydrology Tools to implement the most common tools in ArcGIS. The
project is also will demonstrate how to get a stream order map and generate a stream network map
(Part 2).

Inputs:

- Study area shape file (Kosinjaq_Boundary.shp)

- Digital Elevation Model of 30 m resolution (DEM_Kosinjaq_30m)

Outputs:

- The watershed delineation of Kosinjaq City in Erbil City.

- Stream Network of the watershed -Kosinjaq
Steps:
- Copy and paste your Base_Project_Structure and rename it Project_8
- Copy and paste your RawData which you downloaded from the web to the Data Folder inside
the Project_8, and then unzip it by WinRAR using this time the Extract Here option:
- Open ArcMap
▪ ADD Data >Connect to folder
Check the resolution of the DEM, Cell Size (x, y): 30, 30

Check the coordinate system: WGS_1984_UTM_Zone_38N

Use the project to make the shapefile projected on UTM 38 N zone: name the
new shape file as (Study_Site):
Data Management Tools>Projections and Transformations>Project
Make the shapefile Hollow: and 1.5 line weight
Notice that the unit is in a meter

Notice that the data frame has a coordinate system of

(WGS_1984_UTM_Zone_38N)
Remove the Kosinjaq_Boundary
To save the project_8
- File
- Save as (Project_8_Watershed Delineation) inside the Other Folder
inside the Project_8 folder
> Save

Make the Project_8.gpd your default file

Click save again
Now, let us start filling the sinks in the DEM by using the Fill tool
Notice that the DEM ranges from 1454 to 260 meters:
Spatial Analyst Tools>Hydrology>Fill
Name the new raster as (Fill)
Notice that the 260 became 262 after using Fill Tool

Now let us use the Flow Direction tool

Spatial Analyst Tools>Hydrology>Flow direction
Name the new raster as (Flow_Direction)
Notice that each number refers to a specific direction: For example, number
1 means the direction of the flow to the right; and number 4 means the flow
direction to the south, etc.
Look at the meaning of the other numbers below
Spatial Analyst Tools>Hydrology>Flow Accumulation
Name the new raster as (Flow_ACC)

Let us make some changes to the Flow_Acc layer to make it clearer and finer
Click on Classify 2 classes
Change the 238,870 to 5,000> click OK
Apply>OK

Change the Black color to white color for the first range (0-5,000), and the White color
to Black color for the second range (5,000- 771,038) in the Table of contents under
Layers
Hint: right click on the first range and then pick the white color
Now, use the Raster Calculator to pick the second range of the Flow_Acc raster
Spatial Analyst Tools>Map Algebra>Raster Calculator
"Flow_Acc" > 5000
This condition states that the Flow_Acc which is bigger than 5000 should take the value
1, otherwise it will be 0
Name the new raster (Raster_Cal)
Click on OK

Change the 0 layer to no color and the 1 layer to black color

Now, use the Stream Order to get some categories for the streams, and name the new
raster (Stream_Order)

Use the Stream Order Tool to get new stream network

Look at the attribute table of the Stream_Order raster layer

Let us generate the watershed for this study area

Part 1
Watershed delineation: the first step is to create a pour point which is the outlet of the
drainage area: open ArcCatalog> right-click on the Proejct_8.gdp and New>Feature
class
Next
Next>Next>Next>Finish
Click on Editor>start Editing>Editor>Editing Windows>Create features>
Pick a pourpoint that is located here
Stop editing>Yes
Change the symbol of the pour point

OK

Click on the Watershed Tool, name the new raster layer (Watershed_1)
OK

Change the color to blue

Convert the Watershed_1 raster to a Polygon
Conversion Tools>From Raster to Polygon> name the new shapefile as (Watershed)
Look at the attribute table: two polygons are generated, you can either delete the smallest
one using the Editor Tool or combine them together using Dissolve
- Let us delete the polygon with a small area using the editor tool

Prepare the Layout for the Part _1 map

Export the map as JEPG with 100-pixel resolution: name the exported map as
(Project_8_Watershed Delineation)
Part -1
Map
We need to extract the stream _Order raster layer into the Watershed using the Extract
by Mask., name the new raster (Stream_Order_1)
Covert the Stream_Order_1 for the watershed from raster to polylines, and name the
new polyline (Stream_Network)
Look at the attribute table

Use Dissolve to unite the Grid Code number based on the Grid_code number, name the
new polyline (Stream_Network_1)
Use symbology to get 4 stream order
As follows:
Apply>OK
Grid Code 1 - line weight =0.5
Grid Code 2 - line weight =1.0
Grid Code 3 - line weight =1.5
Grid Code 4 - line weight =2.5

Show the grid code and prepare the layout for Part -2 Use the label Features Option
Export the Stream Network Map as the same as Part 1: name the map as
(Project_8_Stream Network)
To be turned in:
Question 1: Please screen capture, or copy-paste your final during this exercise into a word
document and export it as a pdf, then submit it via the Website. For the following maps:
o Part 1: Watershed Delineation Map. JPEG, with 100 dpi resolution
o Part 2: Stream Network Map.JPEG, with 100 dpi resolution

Question 2: Write a short-bulleted description with a snapshot if possible, of at least 5

(five) different new tools encountered (during conducting this project_8) when finding,
copying, importing, editing, or submitting the final pdf result.
Hint: don’t google it and copy things that are not related to this project. The
description is for the new things that you are exposed to through this project.
