PSYCHOLOGY is the SCIENCE that aims to DESCRIBE and EXPLAIN the


BEHAVIOUR and the MENTAL ACTIVITIES mainly of man but also of other living
beings.

Historical background

o Three centuries ago: the child was a miniature of the adult.


o 17th century: The child was inherently evil so there was a great emphasis on moral
teaching.
o 18th century: (Rousseau)The child is naturally good and should be left free to develop
at his own pace.
o (Locke): the child is neither inherently good nor inherently bad but is born tabula
rasa, "a charter of good for inventory"
o The Industrial Revolution: it "wanted" the child as property and as a source of
economic benefit.
o The modern view: the child is a developing person with special developmental needs
that must be met.
o The pioneers of Developmental Psychology with the first studies showed that the
environment influences development.
Purpose of Developmental Psychology

o Growth goes through three phases:

(a) the type and nature of changes in the different periods of life (from the
intrauterine period to senescence).
