Attempt QUESTION ONE (compulsory) and any other TWO questions.
QUESTION ONE (Compulsory)
a) Define and describe in detail the following as used in resonant circuits and
theory of networks. (5 Marks)
i. Selectivity
ii. Q-factor
iii. Resonant frequency
iv. Power factor correction
v. Coupling co-efficient
b) Two coils are connected in series and their effective inductance is found to
be 15 mH. When the connection to one coil is reversed, the effective
inductance is found to be 10 mH. If the coefficient of coupling is 0.7,
determine: (2 Marks)
i. The self-inductance of each coil, and
ii. Mutual inductance.
c) Find the Fourier transform of the function in Figure 1c using the derivative
property. (4 Marks)

d) A current of (15 + 𝑗8) 𝐴 flows in a circuit whose supply voltage is (120 +
𝑗200) 𝑉. Determine:
i. The active power, and
ii. The reactive power.

e) Obtain the inverse Laplace transforms of the following function. (4 Marks)

f) Three impedances are connected in series across a 100 V, 2 kHz supply. The
impedances comprise: (5 Marks)
An inductance of 0.45 mH and resistance 2
An inductance of 570 H and 5 resistance, and
A capacitor of capacitance 10 F and resistance 3
Assuming no mutual inductive effects between the two inductances
calculate:
i. The circuit impedance,
ii. The circuit current,
iii. The circuit phase angle and
iv. The voltage across each impedance.
v. Draw the phasor diagram.
g) For the circuit shown in Figure 1g determine the voltages V1 and V2 if the
supply frequency is 1 kHz. Draw the phasor diagram and hence determine
the supply voltage, V and the circuit phase angle. (4 Marks)

h) The use of the Laplace transform in circuit analysis facilitates the use of
various signal sources such as impulse, step, ramp, exponential, and
sinusoidal. Find 𝑣0 (𝑡) in the circuit of Figure 1h. Assume 𝑣0 (0) = 5𝑉.

QUESTION TWO
a) Consider the diagram in Figure 2a. When the switch is closed and a step
voltage 𝑉 is applied, the series 𝑅𝐿 circuit it is assumed to have no current
carried by the inductor 𝐿. By use of circuit theory of networks laws and
engineering mathematics, derive expressions for the following parameters
after 𝑡 = 0. Sketch the behaviour of each parameter verses time. (6 Marks)
i. Current through the circuit, 𝑖

b) Strictly using the derivations obtained in 2 (a) above, solve the following
problem. A coil of inductance 50 mH and resistance 5 Ω is connected to a 110
V, D.C. supply. Determine (i) the final value of current, (ii) the value of
current after 4 ms, (iii) the value of the voltage across the resistor after 6
ms, (iv) the value of the voltage across the inductance after 6 ms, and (v) the
time when the current reaches 15 A. (5 Marks)
c) For the coupled circuit shown in Figure 2c,
Calculate:
i. The self-impedance of the primary circuit,
ii. The self-impedance of the secondary circuit,
iii. The impedance reflected into the primary circuit,
iv. The effective primary impedance,
v. The primary current, and the secondary current.

QUESTION THREE
a) It is expected that a parallel RLC resonant circuit has a mid-band
admittance of 25 ×10-3S, quality factor of 80, and a resonant frequency of
200 krad/s. Calculate the values of R, L, and C. Find the bandwidth and the
half-power frequencies. (3 Marks)
b) The term convolution means “folding.” Convolution is an invaluable tool to
the engineer because it provides a means of viewing and characterizing
physical systems.
i. Enumerate the four steps used to evaluate a convolution
integral. (4 Marks)
ii. Find the convolution of the two signals in Figure 3b. Show all
the steps involved while sketching all the necessary figures
from the start to the end. (8 Marks)

c) A coil of resistance 5 Ω and inductance 120 mH in series with a 100 µF
capacitor, is connected to a 300 V, 50 Hz supply. Calculate:
i. The current flowing,
ii. The phase difference between the supply voltage and current,
iii. The voltage across the coil,
iv. The voltage across the capacitor and
v. Draw the phasor diagram.

QUESTION FOUR
a) Examine Figure 4a below. There is load impedance in the secondary
terminals.
i. Show that the reflected impedance can be given as:

ii. Let 𝑅1 = 20 𝛺, 𝑅2′ = 16 𝛺, 𝑅𝐿 = 50𝛺, 𝐿1 = 𝐿2 = 10𝑚𝐻, 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑀 =
2𝑚𝐻. Determine the value of the secondary current 𝐼2 if 𝐸1 =
2 𝑉 and the angular frequency 𝑤 = 2000 𝑟𝑎𝑑/𝑠. (5 Marks)
b) Two mutually coupled coils X and Y are connected in series to a 240 V d.c.
supply. Coil X has a resistance of 5 Ω and an inductance of 1 H. Coil Y has a
resistance of 10 Ω and an inductance of 5 H. At a certain instant after the
circuit is connected, the current is 8 A and increasing at a rate of 15 A/s.
Determine the mutual inductance between the coils and the coefficient of
coupling (4 Marks)
c) A mutual inductor is used to couple a 20 Ω resistive load to a 50 V generator
as shown in Figure 4c. The generator has an internal resistance of 5 Ω and
the mutual inductor parameters are 𝑅1 = 20 𝛺, 𝐿1 = 0.2 𝐻, 𝑅2 = 25 𝛺, 𝐿2 =
0.4 𝐻 and 𝑀 = 0.1 𝐻. The supply angular frequency is 150 𝑟𝑎𝑑/𝑠. Determine
the generator current 𝐼1 and the load current 𝐼2 . (6 Marks)

QUESTION FIVE
a) Using the Fourier transform method, find 𝑖0 (𝑡) in Figure 5a when 𝑖𝑠 (𝑡) =
10 𝑠𝑖𝑛 2𝑡 𝐴. (5 Marks)

b) An alternating voltage v = 250 sin 800 t volts is applied across a series circuit
containing a 30 resistor and 50 µF capacitor.
Calculate:
i. The circuit impedance,
ii. The current flowing,
iii. The potential difference across the resistor,
iv. The potential difference across the capacitor, and
v. The phase angle between voltage and current.

c) Consider the diagram in Figure 5c. While Figure (a) is a series 𝑅𝐶 circuit,
figure (b) is a step voltage of magnitude 𝑉 used to charge the capacitor in
Figure (a), which is assumed to be initially uncharged. By use of circuit
theory of networks laws and engineering mathematics, derive expressions
for the following parameters after 𝑡 = 0. Sketch the behaviour of each
parameter verses time. (6 Marks)
i. The capacitor voltage, 𝑣𝐶
ii. The resistor voltage, 𝑣𝑅
iii. Current through the circuit, 𝑖

d) Strictly using the derivations obtained in 5 (c) above, solve the following
problem. A 500 nF capacitor is connected in series with a 100 kΩ resistor
and the circuit is connected to a 50 V, D.C. supply. Calculate:
i. The initial value of current flowing,
ii. The value of current 150 ms after connection,
iii. The value of capacitor voltage 80 ms after connection, and
iv. The time after connection when the resistor voltage is 35 V.
