CIPS Principal Marker (External) Report

Qualification Diploma in Procurement and Supply

Module L4M8

Exam Series November 2023

These reports are designed to help tutors and learners understand the common trends presented by
both strong and weaker answers in relation to the module for the given exam series.

Learning outcome 1:

The question addressed learning outcome 1: Demonstrate the application of the procurement
cycle.

The command word used was: Describe - Give details setting out the key characteristics of a topic
and the potential impacts.
This question was generally answered well. A number of responses discussed the subject area in
detail before finally addressing the question. Better answers clearly identified the area in question
and showed some application to the case study. Weaker responses suggested general areas
without application to the case study.

Learning outcome 2:

The question addressed learning outcome 2: Demonstrate the application of the key stages of the
sourcing process.

The command word used was: Explain - Give reasons for/account for something so that it is clear
and easy to understand in relation to a given situation.
This question had mixed responses; weaker responses included incorrect criteria that did not
address the question. Better answers clearly addressed the question with good application to the
scenario.

Learning outcome 3:

The question addressed learning outcome 3: Demonstrate the application of whole life asset
management.

The command word used was: Explain - Give reasons for/account for something so that it is clear
and easy to understand in relation to a given situation.
This question was generally answered well, with most candidates clearly understanding the area
being assessed. Some answers only briefly addressed the question with limited, if any, application
to the scenario. Better responses also provided detailed examples with good application to the
scenario.

Learning outcome 4:

The question addressed learning outcome 4: Demonstrate the application of ethical and
responsible sourcing within an organisation.

The command word used was: Describe - Give details setting out the key characteristics of a topic
and the potential impacts.
This question was generally answered well, with candidates able to describe changes to the
sourcing options. Most responses also showed good application to the scenario. Better answers
clearly highlighted the different elements identified in the scenario and identified clear changes.
Weaker responses identified general changes that could be made without any link to the scenario.
