THE MOVIES Activity 9

Perceiving colours

Introduction

The colour of an object depends on the light that it reflects. When a red apple is illuminated by white (which contains
all colours) it will reflect the red colour but absorb all the other colours. We see the red reflected light and perceive
the apple as red.

What colour does a green apple reflect?

What colour does a white object reflect?

What about a black object?

Additive colours
Introduction

Televisions and computer monitors however produce images by combining different amounts of red, green and blue
light to produce a broad range of colours. The screen is made up of many individual pixels each of which has three
coloured sub pixels. A typical High Definition screen has over 2 million of these pixels.

Part A - simulation

Use the following online activity to see some of the colours that can be produced using these three colours of light

Part B – practical

In this investigation you will use the back of the ray box to project various combinations of coloured light onto a
white screen.

Take digital photos of your different results and include them in your results

AIM What colours are formed when different coloured light beams are combined?

Red & Blue light =

Blue & Green light =

PROCEDURE Place red, blue & green filters in the three slots of the ray box as shown in the image.

Use the mirrors to combine the different coloured beams of light onto a white surface.

RESULTS Red & Blue light = Magenta

Blue & Green light = Cyan

Red & Green light = Yellow
