How to Improve your Voice | Neeraj M.Mehra

http://www.voiceartistes.com/article4.html
Voice is God Gifted, yes it true and fact, but it can be trained,
this also a fact. Nobody is a born singer or narrator or voice
artiste, yes he/she may have a sweet, melodious voice by birth
but still his/her voice needs to be trained enough to modulate,
variate and able to perform professionally for required time. I
am here to tell you about tips on how to improve your voice
( for voicing, dubbing, mimicry) so that you are able to have
more base, uncharred, rhythmatic voice and have some control
over your throat to produce variation and modulation in your
voice as and when necessary. Whatever you want to become in
voicing arena, be it voice over artiste, dunning artist, mimicry
artiste, performing actor, you need to modulate your voice
according to the mood of the script. This is the first
requirement of being a professional voice artiste. Anyway, let’s
begin with the training.

1. Like what a singer does every morning called "Riyaaz" you

should also do the same every morning. You can take "Sa" only
of Sa Re Ga Ma and then take a deep breath from mouth, not
nose, and start reciting "Sa" with your full base voice till your
quality breath comes to a decline level. Stop deliberately.
There is no use of unnecessary stretching of breath. Keep in
mind you have to inhale from mouth, fully and should go on
saying "Sa" till the end of your breath in a continuous pitch
without any breaks, variation or modulation of your voice. This
will not only help you in having good base voice but also
increase your voicing stamina. Similarly same thing can be

1
done chanting OM, 50% "O" and 50% "MM". When you do
"MM" your resonance quality improves, your vocal chords
work in tandem, you tend to develop smoothness and
uniformity n your vocal texture.

2. If Main/Lead Voice Over is your target, you should everyday

practice atleast two scripts with proper diction, pronunciation,
modulation (as & when). If you do not have the stamina you
may lose your voice in a lengthy script, that is your voice may
be bold, enthusiastic, and fresh in the first quarter of the script
and may get tired or becomes low in the end. This is called the
stamina of Voice, to remain one till the end especially in the
case of background lead voice overs or narrators for
documentaries or audio visuals. Similarly for other voicing
fields, mimicry, standup comedy, cartoon dubbings, simple
dubbings etc. Record your voice everyday and listen. Every day
you will notice some improvement.

3. Yoga plays a very important role in keeping your throat &

voice healthy. Everyday chanting of "OM" for 3-4 minutes will
give similar positive results as mentioned in point number one.
You can also perform other Asanas for throat as "Singasana"
and "Bharamri Pranayam" which will clear your throat and
keep you away from all problems.

4. One more Yoga asana which is the most effective is

'Ujjhayani Pranayam' where full throat is contracted inside,
and a sound is produced in reverse, that is you are producing
sound by inhaling in through nose but throat is fully contracted
and lips closed. When you breathe in fully, after that you
release your throat muscles and release the breath through the
left nostril, by holding the right nostril with your right thumb.
A very effective way to exercise your tonsils.

2
5. To have a good feel of your voice and make it more fluent,
one prestigious voice artiste once told me his secret which I
am sharing with you, to speak 'om' or simple 'Aaaah' in an
earthen pot or a 'mutka'. You can also practice your scripts like
this before appearing for an audition or final recordings.

6. Stay away from very cold things, beverages, aerated waters,

chocolates, pickles, chillies and anything very sour.
Chocolates, Toffees and other paste like things form a layer on
your tonsils, exposing it to infections. If you eat occasionally do
try to clear your throat and I hope you all brush your teeth
before sleeping. Try to gargle your throat by simple Ayurvedic
Gargle Concentrate, diluted in warm water before going to bed
every day. This would minimize any chances for infection while
you are in your sleep. Do not shout; that makes your vocal
chords vibrate so harshly that they can be damaged.

while singing. Everyone will want to have a melodious
voice, especially for those who have a hobby of singing.
But what if you not have a melodious voice? Got a hobby
singing but less melodious voice. Do not worry, because
this time we will discuss that our voice can be melodious.

Tips for caring for your voice to keep it melodious

4
Many drinking mineral water; our vocal cords vibrate at
high speed, and drink plenty of mineral water will make
the vocal cords remain wet. If dry’ll be hoarse voice.
Eating fruits that contain high water content can also be,
like apples, pears, grapes, watermelon, melon etc..

Let your neck and throat muscles relax; Let your throat
and neck muscles relaxed even when singing high notes
or low. Some singers lifted her head when singing high
notes and down when singing low notes, to avoid
excessive tension on the muscle. If there is excess
tension for long periods may cause reduced voice tone.

Do not abuse your voice; abuse your voice eg by

shouting, talking too loud, etc.. Because of this make our
voices become hoarse, and this means the vocal cords
become irritated.

Save the sound when you are sick; So for example you
again sick with a fever, infection, cough, runny nose,
sore throat or hoarse. Let’s not sing as this will prolong
the healing period and Your voice even becomes more
hoarse.

Use your voice well; when you speak have to be careful.

Not until the injuries hit, note how to talk to avoid
irritating sound. Also when speaking to large groups
outside the building, consider the use of loudspeakers.
Speaking loudly without loudspeakers can cause
excessive tension on the muscle sound. So better use
loudspeakers.

Before singing you should warm up first. If you want to

perform complex voice activities or complex voice
training, you should train the voice as simple as do, re,

5
mi, fa, sol, la, si, do, repeated. Now you know the tips
and tricks to maintain and make your voice so
melodious.

During Bhramri Pranayama a sound resembling the hum

of a bee is made while exhaling. In Sanskrit Bhramri
means humming of a bee.

Preparation

Read general guidelines for pranayama before starting

this pranayama.

 Sit on your favourite Asana (Padma asana, Vajra

asana or Sukh asana) in a well ventilated room free
from any distractions. Keep the waist, back, neck
and spine erect. For the beginners, you can sit on a

 Makes voice pleasant and melodious.

 Increases power of concentration.
 Cures diseases of throat, and the vocal organs
become strong.

Effective Tips For A Better Singing Voice

Avoid vocal strain with these tips for a better

singing voice..

Don't you find it disheartening that singing appears to be

so easy for some people, yet when you sing, it turns into
a complicated mess!
7
Watching someone float from note to note, with thick,
rich tone. Watching them flutter high in their range with
absolute ease...

It's enough to completely destroy any singer’s

confidence!

Well... Don't fret. You can sound like this as well. You
can develop a voice that has tone so sweet that you can
serve it for desert.

Watch this video to find out how:

You can learn to control your voice with deft skill and
precision. Those wonderful singers that are so
intimidating may not be so different from you and I...

...I am going to share with you a few tips for a better

singing voice. Tips that you can immediately apply to
your singing, with great results....

Here is what you will learn if you decide to keep

reading...

 How to take tension off the voice, thereby

improving your tone quality and singing range

Here's a little trick that will help take a lot of tension off
your voice. Firstly let me say, if you're feeling a lot of
tension when you sing, you are doing something
wrong. Using incorrect technique...

...With correct technique, singing becomes as easy as

talking (but much more fun!).

8
There are some muscles underneath your chin. Muscles
that will kill the singing process if they are engaged!
These are called the diagrastic muscles.....

To feel these muscles for yourself, place your thumb

underneath your chin, and press gently on the skin. Now,
swallow for me. Make some noise if you like....

.....Can you feel how tight those muscles felt when you
swallow? These muscles are bad news for singing, and
with incorrect technique, will almost always become
tight.

When this happens, they will restrict your singing range,

affect the quality of your tone, and most likely, become
quite sore!

Here's a video that show's you how to overcome this

problem and set your voice free.

So what can you do about this? After all, I did promise

tips for a better singing voice! And tips you shall
receive...

Your Thumb Useful For Singing?

You can avoid the tightening of these muscles by simply

holding your thumb against them when you practice.
This works in two different ways.

Firstly, it gives you that extra awareness for when the

muscles are becoming tight. When you feel them tighten,
you can quite easily adjust to relax them. (It's usually a
matter of using a little more air support).

9
Secondly, by gently pushing down on the muscles, it will
actually make it harder for them to tighten. This is
because they have to overcome this extra force that you
are applying.

So give it a try! I suggest you begin by singing "Mmmm"

with a closed mouth on an easy scale. If you feel the
muscles tightening, you know you are singing with extra
tension.

This is good news! It means that once you allow these

muscles to relax, singing will become much more easy
and fun!

Once you have mastered singing on "Mmmmm", you can

move onto more difficult words. "Mum", "Gee", and
"Nay" are good examples.

Mastering this technique can increase the quality of your

tone tenfold. It also will make it much easier to explore
the higher registers of your voice (mixed voice, head
voice).

Tips For A Better Singing Voice - Speech Level

Singing

10
This strategy of relaxing the diagrastic muscles is just
one part of the speech level singing process.

This is a method of singing that allows you to sing with

absolute ease.....ie: the ease of speaking. By learning the
speech level singing process, you will develop a voice
that has amazing tone, singing range, and control.

Training this way, you will develop the muscles that are
important to the singing process. As these muscles
begin to strengthen, your voice will improve at an
amazing rate! Soon those singers that always were
incredibly intimidating will not seem so impressive.

Well, I hope these tips for a better singing voice help you
do exactly that.......develop a better singing voice!

Enjoy practicing the exercise and if you want to know

more, I highly recommend researching the speech level
singing technique. It is the technique that literally

11
transformed my voice from very average to quite
impressive (my humble opinion!).

http://www.wikihow.com/Develop-a-Strong-High-Singing-
Voice

How to Develop a Strong High Singing Voice

Developing a strong high singing voice takes a lot of time

and effort. Go through these steps regularly and you will
begin to notice a change in your voice. This works if you
actually try!

Steps

1.

12
2. 1Sit or stand up straight with your muscles
relaxed. Keeping your back straight and your
posture neutral will allow your diaphragm and lungs
to expand properly as well as encourage air flow.
Since your singing power originates in the
diaphragm, making a point of relaxing the rest of the
body will help you refocus your attention on the
parts of the body that matter.
o Make a special effort to relax your stomach.
Resist the urge to hold or suck it in, as this will
make your breathing unnatural.
o Using your thumb, push the larynx from side to
side gently, allowing your vocal chords to
loosen, thereby putting less stress on them
when you begin to sing.
3. Breathe from your diaphragm. The diaphragm is
a muscle beneath the lungs that contracts whenever
you breathe in, allowing your lungs to expand into
that space. Expelling air is therefore a question of
allowing the diaphragm to relax in controlled,
gradual manner. To test what it feels like to breathe
through your diaphragm, bend over at the waist and
sing. Notice the feeling in your stomach and the
sound that you create.

 Don't ever breathe in through your nose; it will

make it harder to reach high notes.
 3
 Warm up before starting to sing. Make nonsense
sounds (ex. expelling air to forcibly flap your lips by
and create a b-b-b-b-b or p-p-p-p-p sound, making a
prolonged "shhhhh" sound, and so on), covering
different consonants and vowels to engage different
13
facial muscles. This produces a richer, less strained
sound. (When you blow up a balloon, it is much
easier to stretch the balloon before blowing it up;
your vocal chords function in much the same way.)
 4
 Start with songs that are in your vocal range.
Covering territory you're already comfortable with
will continue to warm up your voice before you try
to train it to do anything new. Consider choosing a
song that has a few notes slightly above your usual
range and make these your goal.
 Practice scales, gradually increasing the pitch
each time. Remember that your vocal chords are
delicate membranes and must be eased into any new
techniques.
Train your body to hit the high notes. As you sing the
note, press your lower belly in but keep your upper belly
out; this is called a “lower belly boost.” Drop your lower
jaw dramatically but keep your mouth opened narrowly.
Bend your knees slightly to make yourself feel like you're
moving downwards as your voice goes up. Try to
minimize the height to which you lift your larynx up as
you increase your pitch; though this is what people
naturally do when raising their voices, this strains your
throat and can cause your voice to crack. Monitor this by
placing your fingers above your larynx while you sing
and adjusting your technique to keep the larynx down.

 Don’t look up while you sing high notes; keep your

vision directly in front of you to avoid bending your
throat and straining the sound.
 Sticking your tongue forward may help give the high
notes a richer sound.
 7

14
 Always remember to not strain your voice. Don't
try to force yourself into a much higher register too
quickly; there are often serious consequences when
you do. Remember to always drink water before a
performance or practice, which will keep your voice
steady. Keep one near you for emergencies as well.
Lifestyle Changes
 1
 Improve your posture. To strengthen your singing
voice, make good posture a habit, not a mode you
switch into.
 2
 Get in shape. Take up running or practise interval
training to increase your lung strength and capacity.
Work on vocal cords
 3
 Develop facial flexibility. Make funny faces,
stretch your mouth and tongue in all directions,
yawn to open the back of the throat, and loosen your
jaw until you're able to push or pull on it with your
hand. These exercises will help you shape and
perfect the sound as it comes out of your mouth.

Tips

 Keep on singing and don't get scared or nervous.

Pretend you are all alone somewhere where you
always wanted to be.
 If some of the songs you want to be able to sing
incorporate very high notes that you have trouble
reaching, warm up by singing in a lower octave first.
 Drink lots of water. (It's best to drink tepid water.
This will lessen the 'shock' to your vocal chords.)
Avoid alcohol, milk, hot chocolate and other thick

15
drinks. Also, avoid chocolate before you are going to
sing.
 Try Swimming, Holding your breath underwater will
help your lungs become stronger.
 Don't drink cold water either; it will make your voice
raspy. Drink lukewarm water, it can also ease a little
bit of your throat.
 Practice your range, and try to sing the highest and
lowest comfortable notes everyday, and before you
sing to release tension, and expand your range!
 Drink water with honey in it. This will help soothe
your throat. Drink it before a performance. It might
help.
 Do not "over sing". There is a limit of how much you
can sing. If your throat starts to feel raspy, stop
singing and drink some room-temperature water; if
you have any lemon or lemon juice, pour some in.
 Take a rest every hour or so to give your throat
some time to relax.
 Sit up and try to raise your eyebrows while making
an 0 with your mouth and face. Don't strain your
voice, though.

 Don't eat dairy before singing.

 Avoid screaming as it hurts your throat.
 Do not eat large 'heavy' meals before singing.
 Practice in a room that echoes (for example, a room
with no furniture). It will help when you are singing.
 As you sing, try to release less air, not more; expelling
more air will actually soften the sound of your singing
rather than strengthen it.
 Quiet places increase your voice to sing higher, and
singing in front of people decreases your "stage fright".
 Take music lessons

16
 Drink warm water as it soothes the throat.
 Relax your body and do some breathing exercises.
Remember to keep your shoulders down as it will help
when singing higher notes. It will help you sing beautiful
because sometimes you lift your shoulders when you sing
high. Also try and think low when you are singing high.
 Never clear your throat too hard as this can damage
the vocal chords.
 If you feel like you can't reach the high notes while
performance, then go slightly lower. Attempting a high
note will cause your voice to sound raspy.

  If you have a square fan or enclosed fan practice

vocal warm ups in them while going higher and
lower, this will help you loosen your voice to get a
higher pitch.

http://www.answers.com/Q/
How_do_you_make_your_voice_very_melodious_and_swe
et_for_singing

How do you make your voice very melodious and

sweet for singing?

1. practise !2. dont shy3. always ready to sing if

anybody says4. be confident5. discover your own
voice6. take everybody compliment

You can match pitch very well but your actual

singing voice isn't good how an improve it?

2. I think this is actually a reasonably involved

question - because it is very difficult to answer
without first hearing your voice. That said, though -
I'll do my best. To define your voice as "not good"
means one of (at least) three things:
17
1. You are singing with improper technique, and
therefore, even though you are singing on pitch,
your voice is not producing a sound that is pleasing
to the human ear.

2. You are singing with proper technique and pitch

but the sound that your voice is producing is a sound
that is not pleasant to your ear.

3. You are singing with proper technique and pitch

but the sound that your voice is producing is a sound
that is not pleasant to other people's ears.

Without knowing you, it is hard to say which is

which... but I can comment on all three of these and
hopefully you'll be able to tell which suits you the
best.

1. So... I could literally go on about vocal technique

for an entire book. Obviously, that wouldn't work
here, and it's been done a million times before... but
I can definitely tell you three of the most important
things I've ever learned about vocal technique.
Before I get started, though, can I just say that most
(seriously, like 90%) of all "vocal teachers" are not
vocal teachers? They are repertoire coaches. They
will help you learn a song and give you some half-
cocked pointers on how to sing, but when it comes
to actually building you to become a unique and
developed singer, they are useless. I can't even tell
you how many "teachers" I would love to go back
and give a peace of my mind to because I have only
realized now how little they knew for how much they

18
charged. It's sad. Anyway, here we go: Ideally, the
only things that you want to control about your voice
are the things that should be in your control. I know
that sounds funny, but it is true. These three core,
foundational things about your voice should not
change, no matter what else is going on.
Unfortunately, in times of stress they also happen to
be the first things that seem to go out the window.

a. Keep your throat relaxed. You should be able,

while you are singing or speaking, to lightly hold
your throat in your hands and gently move your
voicebox side to side. There shouldn't be any
resistance there. If your throat is rigid and tube-like,
then you are killing yourself vocally. You voice will
eventually get exhausted and burn out, and then
your sound will deteriorate.

b. You should not hold any unnecessary tension in

your jaw, your tongue, your neck, your shoulders, or
pretty much anywhere else for that matter, because
that tension adds up to you eventually getting tired
and then your voice falling apart. This is why it's so
hard to not screw this up when you get stressed
(like right before you perform on stage in front of
500 people) because when you get nervous, you
tense up like a coiled spring. The more you perform
in front of people the more this will disappear.

c. You shouldn't sing through your nose, and you

shouldn't sing from deep in your chest. You want to
find a nice, happy, balanced place where you get the
nice resonating quality from both your chest and
your nasal passageways.

19
These three things, as simple as they may sound,
have made a world of difference in how I view vocal
instruction. I never realized that I had these bad
habits myself until after I spent years trying to
figure out why I had a fantastic voice as a kid and
lost it as I got older. I used to sing freely and for fun
when I was a kid - so my voice just did what it
wanted to. As I got older I said "I want to sound like
that guy" and slowly tore my voice apart. Now that I
realized the cause of my problems, I've fixed them
and my voice is back. It's such an enjoyment to just
enjoy singing.

2. Do yourself the favor of realizing that the most

famous and recognizable voices of popular music
since the dawn of recording have made it that far
because they were unique. They all had something
specific about the quality or delivery of their voices
that was particular to them and gave them the
chance to stand out in a crowd. On one end of that
spectrum you have singers like Nat King Cole who,
while being incredibly unique can be regarded as a
"singer with a beautiful voice" and on the other end
you could have someone like the lead singer of
Disturbed (name is escaping me right now) who,
while exceptionally unique and talented, might not
be singing "Unforgettable". Both of those singers
are ridiculously good at what they do... but you'd be
hard pressed to find too many Nat King Cole fans
who think that the guy from Disturbed should put
out a Christmas album. What I'm saying here is "be
true to yourself". Cole wouldn't have had a career if

20
he had tried singing Metal, and ditto in the reverse
for the guy from Disturbed. Now, the hard part of
this is (of course) actually being true to yourself. As
we grow and listen to music around us we are
continually shaped by the voices that we hear. As a
result, we may have a preconceived notion of how
we would like our voices to sound, regardless of how
our voices want to sound on their own! Bob Dylan
couldn't sing "Old Man River" and sound like
anybody but Bob Dylan. And did he have a "great
voice"? It's debatable... his voice is certainly
incredibly recognizable, and has sold millions of
records, but what makes somebody a singer? Get all
of the ideas that your voice has to do what you tell it
to out of your head. Your voice is like a fingerprint.
It is unique to you and you should celebrate that
instead of trying to hide it. It just might make you
famous!

3. Ah, this one is no fun. Some people, through no

fault of their own, simply do not have pleasing
voices. Please take into account what I said above...
I'm not going to tell you what a "pleasing voice" is. I
like Nat King Cole and Disturbed and Tom Waits and
Martin Sexton and a ton of other crazy singers who
are completely unlike each other but who are all
phenomenal in their own right. It's all a matter of
taste, and for whatever voice you've got, there is
usually some type of music that suits you and some
type of audience that wants to hear it. But in
relatively rare cases, nobody wants to hear you. And
for those cases? I say sing anyway. We sing because
it makes us feel good - and no one should ever take
that away from you. And who knows? Maybe the

21
reason no one likes your voice is because you are so
unlike everyone else that no one even understands
how to appreciate it yet!
3.How do you make your sing voice better?
4. by exercising your voice. if that makes sense. make
sure to drink tea with lots of honey to prevent
getting hoarse (loosing your voice.)

How do you make a bad voice sing good?

Here are a few tips you can try. 1. Stand up straight and
take slow deep breaths and relax. 2. Try not to slouch
while singing this gives you less energy and makes your
voice crack. 3. Always let your throat be Open and free
of tension,an open throat protects your throat and
produces a rich sound. 4. Work on tuning your tone, like
singing notes to get your voice ready. 5. Practice these
techniques on your free time, usually it's best in the
morning.

5 Things you can do to improve your singing voice

Posted by Teresa on June 25, 2009 at 8:14 am

Whether you’re singing Happy Birthday to someone at

the office or singing along with the radio in your car, it
never hurts to try to sound a bit better. Here are five
easy-to-learn tips to improve your singing today.

22
1. Stand Up

When you sing, your posture can have a huge effect on

the way you sound. Your chest, and more importantly
your lungs, need to be open as wide as possible to get a
good sound. Stand up straight, stretch out your arms and
keep your shoulders down and back. When standing, feel
your weight on your feet. If it is not balanced, shift your
body, bend your knees, straighten your back until your
weight feels balanced on your feet. You will know if you
are well balanced if you can raise your toes without
feeling a change of balance. To open up your chest,
imagine holding a huge beach ball in your hands. Fill up
your lungs with air and feel the expansion in your
chest. So today when you sing, standing up will go a
long way to improving the way you sound and look.

2. Breathe

Believe if or not, there are many different ways to

breathe. For singers, you don’t want your shoulders to
move up when you take in a breath as this will only
create tension in your chest and neck. Instead your belly
should move out and in (your chest will expand too).
Practice taking in a quick full breath and then slowly
exhaling the air. If you have more singing
experience, work on exercising your diaphragm - it can
help you control your breathing.

Also, for each song that you sing, plan where you are
going to take your breaths. You do not want to be taking
a gulp of breath in the middle of a lyrical phrase. By
planning and practicing where to take your breath, you
will be able to concentrate on delivering the lyric.

23
When you are singing today, be aware of your breathing:
how you are breathing and where you are taking your
breath during the song.

3. Open your mouth

This sounds like a no-brainer but many of us don’t open

wide enough when we sing. We might think that our
mouth is open wide, we might be shy to open it wider
than we normally do, or we might even think that it’s our
style to sing with a mouth that is only slightly open.
Whatever the reason, it won’t hurt you to try to open
your mouth wider than you normally do. Physically, you
know your mouth is really wide open if you feel like
yawning. When you yawn you will feel the increased
space in your mouth and throat. In fact, practicing
yawning will really open your mouth to let your voice
flow out. For today, exaggerate opening your mouth
really wide while singing and if possible record yourself
so that you can listen to the difference in the sound of
your voice. Make adjustments until you get the sound
you want.

4. Sing like you mean it

Over our lifetime we will sing thousands of songs, from

Happy Birthday to Auld Lang Syne. Sometimes we sing
just for fun, and in those cases it might not matter
whether you sound like you mean it or not. But if you’re
singing a solo, that you really care about, making sure
you mean what you sing will add tremendous value to
your performance. I don’t mean over-performing it, or
belting it out really loudly. Singing loudly or holding
notes for a long time does not necessarily add meaning
to your performance. What will make the lyrics more
24
believable is the phrasing, intonation and texture that
you give to your delivery of the lyrics. For each song
that you want to perform, ask yourself these questions:

 Why are you singing this song?

 What does the song mean to you?
 What do you want to communicate to your
audience?

When you have the answers to these questions for the

song, practice speaking the lyrics out loud. Speak the
phrases as if you were saying them to someone. Know
who you are saying the words to and why you are saying
the words. Next, before singing the lyrics, practice
humming the melody. Listen to where you want to place
emphasis and think about how you want to place
emphasis; sometimes you will want to sing louder to add
emphasis, but sometimes singing with a quiet whisper-
like voice can add more impact than a loud voice. Also
think about which notes you would like to hold and
which you would like to cut short. When you are ready,
sing the lyrics to the melody. For the song that you are
singing today, practice speaking the words first,
humming the melody and then putting the two together
and sing the song like you mean it.

5. Use your ears

Controlling what comes out of your mouth, starts with

your ears. There is a reason why singers practice scales
and follow other musical exercises. The more you can
train your ears, the easier it will be for you to sing the
notes on key. Although you can spend years training
your ears, paying attention to a few details today can
improve your performance now. If you are singing with
musical accompaniment (live or recorded) listen to the
music as you sing and keep your pitch tuned to the
music. If you are singing a cappella, you will need to sing
from memory and so you’ll need to listen to the music in
your memory. This requires more practice than singing
with accompaniment but can be quite rewarding. In
both cases when you perform you will need to listen to
both the music and your vocal. To improve your
performance today, listen attentively to the music once
without singing along before you perform it. When you
are performing the song, let the music guide your voice,
you’ll sing great.

A few other thoughts

Paying attention to any one or all of these 5 tips will help

improve your singing today, but like anything else, the
more you practice the better you’ll be. Practice your
posture and your breathing daily so that it becomes
natural to you. Learn the lyrics and melody of the songs
you sing so well that they seem they could have been
written for you. Learn the music so well that you could
sing the song in any key, with any musical
accompaniment or a cappella.

When you are singing or practicing, if you start to feel

pain in your throat, neck or head, stop immediately.
Singing should not hurt and any pain that you experience
when singing will mean that your muscles are tired or
that you are straining for something you are not ready
for. Stop singing, take a break, relax and try again later.

All of that said, the best way to improve your singing

voice is to sing!
