Many educational institutions assess students through exams rather than continuous

assessment. Do the advantages of this policy outweigh its disadvantages?

With the shifting demands of an ever-evolving world have come radical changes in the
educational landscape. One of theses is many educational institutions’ replacement in continuous
assessment with exams. In my opinion, the merits of this policy eclipse its demerits and reasons
for my belief will be discussed in the following essay.
Admittedly, there are undeniable downsides to the adoption of exams. First and foremost,
exams may cause pressure among students. For example, the pressure of performing well in
exams can lead to high levels of stress and anxiety, which may negatively impact a student’s
performance and over-all wellbeing. Moreover, exams is not completely accurate as it is one-
time performance. As a matter of fact, exams assess students based on their performance on a
single day, which can not fully reflect their overall understanding or abilities. Besides, factors
such as illness, stress and external circumstances can unfairly affect results.
Notwithstanding the aforementioned drawbacks of assessing students through exams, I
believe that such an assessment is more beneficial for students and teachers alike. The prime
argument is that it provides teachers with efficiency in evaluation. In reality, exams are a time-
efficient way to evaluate a large number of students in a short period. This allows teachers to
assess knowledge and understanding across a wide range of topics simultaneously. Furthermore,
exams are motivation for students to study harder. In fact, the high stakes associated with exams
can motivate students to study intensively and consolidate their learning, leading to a deeper
understanding of the material. Finally, evaluating through exams is a great way to improve
students’ academic performance. Since exams can provide clear feedback on students’ strengths
and weaknesses, they can identify areas for improvement. This helps students to strengthen their
fortes and decrease their defects.
To summerize, I believe that the merits of assessing through exams overshadow its
demerits. While exams’ disadvantages, namely pressure and inaccuracy, should not be
overlooked, their efficiency and motivation remain notable advantages. It is highly
recommended that instituitions and teachers should strike a balance between exams and
continuous assessment.
