ORAL COMMUNICATION IN CONTEXT – GRADE 11
TYPES OF SPEECHES ACCORDING TO PURPOSE

I. Introductory Concept
People have different reasons and purposes when they speak. Some may want to convey information.
Other people may have other intentions like wanting to motivate another. Some may speak because they
want to convince their listeners to support or affirm what they claim. And others do speak out to disagree
with someone’s opinion.

At the end of the lesson, you are expected to identify the type of speech used according to purpose,
and differentiate the type of speeches from one another.

is not simply reading or talking about your
topic, it requires making connections with
one’s audience and being able to effect
change.

Types of Speeches According to Purpose
1. INFORMATIVE SPEECH
This speech aims to teach the audience something new or to provide worthwhile information.
This type answers the “what”, “why” and “how” of the topic.
Has four types
a. Speech about objects or people: ex. could be about gadgets, COVID 19, etc
b. Speech about processes: may be about photography, dressmaking, etc
c. Speech about events: Martial Law, etc.
d. Speech about concepts: Feminism, Bermuda Triangle, etc.

2. ARGUMENTATIVE SPEECH
This speech intends to convert the audience to agree on the speaker’s point or side.
It focuses on controversial issues.
Types of appeal:
a. Logical Appeal – this speech uses rhetorical strategy in making conclusion based on facts.
Example could be a speech trying to convince someone to get vaccinated against COVID by
showing proofs of people who did not have severe COVID infection because they were
vaccinated as against those who were unvaccinated.
b. Psychological Appeal – this type targets the listeners’ feelings. To convince the listener to
observe health protocols to prevent spread of covid infection, the speaker may tell a story
about the hardships being experienced by the healthcare providers as they work inside the
hospitals.
c. Personal Appeal – this type of appeal is used to persuade the listener based on the character
or reputation of the speaker. For example, a gynecologist giving a talk on adverse effects of
early pregnancy to convince the listeners to avoid pre-marital sex and teenage pregnancies.
3. INSPIRATIONAL SPEECH
The purpose of this speech is to motivate or inspire an audience, to help them have positive
views about things.

Its ultimate goal is to make the audience desire to achieve their goals.
Ex: Pep talks, valedictory speech, a priest’s homily

4. PERSUASIVE SPEECH
 Its purpose is to convince the audience to believe or to adapt something.
 It attempts to influence not only the audience’s belief, but also their attitude and behaviour.
Ex: campaign speeches

5. ENTERTAINING SPEECH
This type intends to make the audience smile, relax, enjoy or even laugh. The topic is usually
light, and funny. The writers of this type however has to carefully plan his talk to avoid making
the audience feel bored and avoid embarrassment on the part of the speaker.

 Use visual aids, and interesting anecdotes
