Air University

Final Examination: Fall 2008

Subject: Computer Networks Total marks: 75 + 55 = 130

Instructors: M. Sohail Khalid / Shahid Hussain Abbassi Time allowed: 3 hours
Classes: BETE 7A, 7B

Attempt all questions. If you think there is any mistake, just mention your assumptions and answer
accordingly. Attach MCQ sheet with your answer book.

Q # 1: Consider the following network, some of the interfaces are marked with their respective IP and MAC
addresses. (25)

Answer the following in only one line

(1) Computer B requests web contents from web server E, which responds accordingly. For all the questions
below, assume that packets are originating from server E in response of the request of Computer B.
a. If the packets from server E contain the TTL field value 3, would the packets reach to computer B?
answer YES or NO
b. If there is a noise source between router B and router A which corrupts the data after every 10
seconds, is it still possible to transfer a very long file from computer E to computer B without any
error, over TCP link? Answer YES or NO
c. What can be a valid MAC address of hub?
d. If the link between router A and switch A is broken what type of ICMP message will be received by
Server E? Which device will initiate this message?
e. If routing table of router B gets empty somehow, what type of ICMP message will be received by
Server E?
f. What would be the destination MAC address in frame header between Server E and switch B?
g. What would be the destination MAC address in frame header between switch B and router C?
h. What would be the source MAC address in frame header between switch B and router C?
i. What would be the source and destination IP address in IP header between router B and router A?
j. What would be the source and destination MAC address between router C and router B?
(2) Assuming the conditions as in part (1), draw the shape of complete frame before and after router A.
Mention all the fields you may remember, particularly layer 2 and layer 3 addresses.

Q # 2: Air University is a federally chartered university, interested in opening its campuses in Lahore and
Faisalabad also. During the planning phase of network design, you are hired by the university as a network
engineer. Initial design of university network with expected number of hosts, is shown in figure. University
is planning to launch many servers so it has bought the network domain 150.150.0.0 with subnet mask of
255.255.0.0. University asks you to complete following tasks as your job responsibilities. (20)

(a) Specify IP addressing scheme without VLSM, specifying each network segment (range of IP
addresses) along with subnet masks.

(b) It is expected that after two years, with the growth of university, there will be 16,000 hosts at each
campus. University is not in a position to buy more global IP addresses. University requires you to design
the IP addressing for this future concern. Discuss if VLSM is necessary or not for this new requirement.
Specify the complete IP addressing in case VLSM is needed.

(c) How would you make it possible to save the university budget by spending as few money as possible
on global IP addresses, keeping in mind internet connectivity from Islamabad campus. Specify the changes
in your previous scheme if needed.

Kindly keep your answer as precise as possible. DO NOT WRITE PARAGRAPHS, just write features like
sentences in presentation slides. Note also that best solution will give you high reward.

Q # 3: Consider the following network, switch ports are configured to be the part of respective VLANs,
identify the Collision domains and Broadcast domains by writing down the names of computer in each
domain. (5)
For example
Broadcast Domain 1 (..computer names..) Broadcast Domain 2 (…..) …. Collision Domain 1 (……) etc

Q # 4: Consider the following network and answer the following. Answer should not comprise of sentences
or paragraphs, only name the specific node, term or very short reason. (10)

(a) Router A wants to send packets to Router E, what path it would adopt? WHY?
(b) Which router/routers may behave as ASBR?
(c) Which router/routers may behave as ABR?
(d) Router B wants to know about networks in Area 200, what type of LSA it requires?
(e) Router G wants to know about Router A, what type of LSA it requires?
(f) Router F wants to know about networks in Autonomous System in which RIP is running, what type
of LSA it requires?
(g) If a static route with default options is defined on Router A to reach Router E through Router D,
what path will packets actually take to reach Router E?
Bonus Question:
What routing protocol would be running on Router A and Router E? Can you name the term specific to this
mechanism?

Q # 5: Host A wants to send some data to Host B on a TCP connection. Following is the information about
stations and data (15)
Host A application: web browser Host B application: web server Transport protocol: TCP
Total data size: 9000 bytes Window size: 4500 bytes MTU: 1500 bytes

Draw the complete diagram of this transfer of data, including initial session establishment and session
termination messages. Also mention the sequence numbers, acknowledgement numbers and code bits/flags
on every transfer.
An incomplete example of diagram is given below.
