SAMPLE PROBLEMS: BRAKES

Sample Problems:
1. The brake shown in the figure has a coefficient of friction of 0.30. If the band width is 50
mm, find the band tensions and the brake torque.
Solution:
2𝜋 𝑟𝑎𝑑
b = 50mm f = 0.3 𝜃 = 250° 𝑥 360°
= 4.66
𝐹1
= 𝑒 𝑓𝜃 = 𝑒 0.3(4.66) = 4.95
𝐹2

∑ 𝑀ℎ𝑖𝑛𝑔𝑒 = 0

F2(125) = 400 x 275

F2 = 880 N

F1 = 4.95 𝑥 880 = 4,360.12N

T = (F1 - F2) r = (4360.12 – 880) (125) = 435,015 N-m

2. The band brake is to absorb 6HP at 150 rpm. The maximum pressure between lining and
the drum is 100 psi. The width of the band is 2”, radius of 6” and f = 0.12. Find the angle
of wrap.
HP = 6 n = 150 rpm Pmax = 100psi b= 2” f = 0.12 r=6
Solution:
𝐹
𝐹1 𝑙𝑛 1
𝑓𝜃 𝐹2
=𝑒 𝜃= eqn 1
𝐹2 𝑓 𝑙𝑛𝑒
𝐻𝑃(63,000) 6(63,000)
T= = = 2,520 in-lb
𝑛 150

Force of the tight side : F1 = brPmax maximum unit pressure

= 2(6)(100) = 1,200 lb
𝑇 2520
T = (F1 - F2) r ; (F1 - F2) = 𝑟 = 6
= 420 lb

Force of the slack side : F2

(F1 - F2) = 420 lb ; F2 =1,200-420 = 780lb
Therefore: from eqn 1:
𝐹 1200
𝑙𝑛 1 𝑙𝑛
𝐹2 780
𝜃= = 3.59 radians
𝑓 𝑙𝑛𝑒 0.12 ln (2.718)
3.59 𝑟𝑎𝑑 𝑋 180°
𝜽= = 207. 5°
𝜋 𝑟𝑎𝑑

3. A differential band brake has an operating lever 0.230m long. The ends of the brake band
are attached so that their operating arms are 28mm and 152mm long. The brake drum
diameter is 61cm, the arc of contact is 300˚, the coefficient of friction f = 0.22 and the brake
band is 3mm x 102mm. Compute the minimum force required at the end of the operating
lever to subject this band pressure of 5.5MPa.

∑ 𝑀𝑜 = 0 ( Clockwise)
0.028F1 + 0.23F = 0.152F2 eqn 1

∑ 𝑀𝑜 = 0 (Counterclockwise)
0.028F2 + 0.23F = 0.152F1 eqn 2
Using the maximum pressure given:
0.61
F1 = Pmax (rb) = 5500 ( )(0.102)
2

F1 = 171.1 KN
2𝜋
171.1
= 𝑒 0.22(300 𝑥 360)
𝐹2
F2 = 54.07KN
From eqn. 1:
0.028 (171.1) + 0.23F = 0.152 (54.07)
F = 14.98 KN
4. A single block brake is shown. The diameter of the drum is 250mm and the angle pf contact
is 60°. If the operating force of 400N is applied at the end of a lever and the coefficient of
friction between the drum and the lining is 0.30, determine the torque that may be transmitted
by the block brake.

250 mm dia

Given:
𝜋 2𝜋
D = 180mm 2θ = 60° x 180° = f = 0.30
3

Solution:
USE CASE 3: line of action of the tangential braking force passes above the fulcrum
Torque, T = Ft r = RN f ( r ) eqn 1
Radial force; RN (x) = Ft (a) + P(L)
RN (200) = Ft (60) + P(450) but : Ft = RN f
RN (200) - Rn (.3)(60) = 400(450)
RN = 989.01N

From eqn 1: T = RN f ( r ) = 989.01N (0.3) ( 125) = 37,087.875 T-mm
