COGNOS BI

Cognos Business Intelligence is a solution designed to address

the challenges of enterprise-scale reporting, analysis,
scorecarding, and event notification.

The Multi-tiered Architecture

Tier 1. Web Server: IBM Cognos BI Gateways

 Web communication in IBM Cognos Business Intelligence
is typically through gateways, IBM Cognos BI supports
several types of Web gateways, including CGI, ISAPI.
 When an IBM Cognos BI gateway receives a request, it
encrypts passwords to ensure security, extracts
information needed to submit the request to an IBM
Cognos BI server.
Tier 2. Applications: IBM Cognos BI Servers

The IBM Cognos BI applications tier contains one or more IBM

Cognos BI servers. an IBM Cognos BI server runs requests, such
as reports, analyses, and queries, that are forwarded by a
gateway.
Each IBM Cognos BI installation includes:

 Application Tier Components, which include a dispatcher,

that operates services and routes requests

 Content Manager, which manages IBM Cognos BI

information

Tier 3. Data: Content Providers

It contains the following:

 Content Store- The content store is a relational database
that contains data that your IBM Cognos BI product needs to
operate, such as report specifications, published models,
and the packages.

 Data Sources-The content store is a relational database that

contains data that your IBM Cognos BI product needs to
operate, such as report specifications, published models,
and the packages

 Metric Store-A metric store is a relational database that

contains content for metric packages.

Components Of IBM Cognos:

IBM Cognos Business Intelligence components are IBM Cognos

Query Studio, IBM Cognos Report Studio…

IBM Cognos Query Studio

 This is mainly used for testing the generated report.

 Here we can also generate the simple reports.
Report Types

 In IBM Cognos Query Studio, you can create list reports,

crosstab reports, or charts.
 A list report shows data in rows and columns. You can
apply a filter, summary, or calculation to manipulate the
data that appears in the report.
 A crosstab report shows a measure at the intersection of
each row and column.
 A charts to present information graphically.

NOTE: In report studio also we can do filtering, formatting like colouring,

borders, font, sort etc

Set Page Breaks

You can set page breaks in a report to control the data that
appears on each page.

Filters
You can use a filter to specify the subset of records that the
report retrieves. Any data that does not meet the criteria is
eliminated from the report, which can improve performance.

IBM Cognos Report Studio

Here we can also generate the reports.

Queries
Queries determine what data items appear in the report.

Lists
Use list reports to show detailed information from your
database.

Crosstabs
Use crosstab reports to show information in a more compact
form than in a grouped list.

Change a List into a Crosstab: by swapping

Summary Functions
This section describes the summary functions that are available in
Report Studio. Some functions, such as Custom, are available only
when you click the aggregate button on the toolbar.

Aggregate
In lists, sets the summary function to Automatic. In crosstabs,
sets the Rollup Aggregate Function
to Automatic.

Automatic
Depending on the type of data item, applies the function None,
Summarize, or Calculated based on the context in which the
data item appears.

Average
Adds all existing values and then divides by the count of
existing values.

Calculated
Specifies that all the terms within the expression for a data
item are aggregated according to their own rollup rules, and
then the results of those aggregations are computed within the
overall expression.

Count: Counts all existing values.

Count Distinct
Returns the total number of unique non-null records.

Custom
Summarizes data based on an expression that you define.

Maximum
Selects the largest existing value.

Median
Returns the median value of the selected data item.

Minimum
Selects the smallest existing value.

None
Does not aggregate values.

Not Applicable
This function is available only for the Aggregate Function
property.
Standard Deviation
Returns the standard deviation of the selected data item.

Summarize
Aggregates data based on model or data type information.

Total
Adds all existing values.
Variance
Returns the variance of the selected data item.

Detail or Summary Filter

Add a filter expression to focus a report and minimize
processing time by excluding unwanted data.
Detail filters are applied to the data source.

Master Detail Relationship

 Create a master detail relationship to deliver information
that would otherwise require two or more reports. For
example, you can combine a list with a chart.
 The list can contain product lines and the chart can show
details for each product line.
Master detail relationships must appear in nested frames
to produce the correct results. You can create a master detail
relationship like:
 Use a parent frame for the master query and a nested
frame for the detail query.

Layout Calculation
Create a layout calculation to add run-time information to your
report, such as current date, current time, and user name.
Properties Pane:

The Properties pane lists the properties that you can set for
an object in a report.

Explorer Bar
Pause the pointer over the following buttons on the Explorer
bar to work with different parts of a report:

 the page explorer button

You use Page Explorer to view or create new report pages

and prompt pages or to create and modify classes .

 the query explorer button

You use Query Explorer to create or modify queries in

relational reporting or dimensional reporting and to
perform complex tasks, such as defining union joins and
writing SQL statements.

 the condition explorer button

You use Condition Explorer to work with variables to define

conditions in a report.

Prompts
Prompts act as questions that help users to customize the
information in a report to suit their own needs. Prompts are
composed of three interrelated components: parameters,
prompt controls, and parameter values. Parameters are based
on parameterized filters and form the questions to ask users.
Prompt controls provide the user interface in which the
questions are asked. Parameter values provide the answers to
the questions.
Types of prompts:

Value Prompt Retrieves data based on values that users

select from a list.
Select & Search Prompt Retrieves values based on search
criteria that users specify.

Date Prompt Retrieves data based on a date that users select.

Time Prompt Retrieves data based on a time that users

select.

Date & Time Prompt Retrieves data based on a date and

time that users select.

Interval Prompt Retrieves data based on a time interval that

users specify.

Tree Prompt Retrieves data based on values that users select

from a list.Values are organized hierarchically.

Generated Prompt Selects a prompt control based on the

data type of the dataitem.
Formatting Object in a Report

Table Adds a table, which is a container in which you can insert

other objects. This is useful for controlling where objects
appear.

Layout Calculation:
Adds a calculation in the layout that contains run-time
information, such as current date, current time, and user name.

Crosstab Space:
Inserts an empty cell on a crosstab edge. Allows for the
insertion of non-data cells on an edge. Blank cells appear for
the edge when the report is run.

Crosstab Space (with fact cells): Inserts an empty cell on

a crosstab edge. Allows for the insertion of non-data cells
on an edge. The contents of the fact cells for the edge are
rendered when a measure is added or the default measure
is specified.
Conditional Blocks Adds an empty block that you can use for
conditional formatting

Page Number Inserts page numbers that you can customize

Row Number: You can add row numbers only to lists and
repeaters.
Conditional Style
A conditional style is a format, such as cell shading or font
color, that is applied to objects if a specified condition is true.

Style Variable:

Highlight data in your report to better identify exceptional

results.

Bursting Reports:

Bursting is the process of running a report once and then

dividing the results for recipients who each view a subset of the
data. For example, salespeople in different regions each need a
report showing the sales target for their country. You use burst
reports to send each salesperson only the information they
need. Burst reports can be distributed by email or saved to a
directory for viewing in IBM Cognos Connection.

Format Data:

Format data in a report to improve readability.

Suppress Empty Cells

Sparse data may result in crosstabs showing empty cells. You
can suppress rows, columns, or rows and columns based on
divide by zero, missing, and overflow values. Suppressing rows
or columns without data gives you a more concise view or your
report.

Drill-through Access
Using drill-through access, you can move from one report to
another within a session while maintaining your focus on the
same piece of data.

Drilling Through Between Packages

You can set up drill-through access between different packages.
The two packages can be based on different types of data
source, but there are some limits.

Create a Page Break or Page Set

You can create simple page breaks, or you can create
advanced page sets to associate pages with a query structure
to force page breaks.
Query Calculation
Insert a query calculation into your report to add a new row or
column with values that are based on a calculation.

Cascading Prompt
cascading prompt to use values from one prompt to filter
values in another prompt.
