Year 4 Civics

National Values
Last lesson we looked at what values citizens should have.
Can you name some of the values we studied?

National values are the ideas and beliefs that citizens of a

country should share.
These values should also guide the way that citizens behave.
In Nigeria, our national values are written in our constitution.

The constitution is a book that contains the highest laws (or rules
citizens must follow) in a country.

Let us look at some of the

national values found in
the Nigerian constitution
Hard work

Good Nigerian citizens must work hard to provide for their families.
We do not respect people who cheat or steal instead of working hard.
Discipline
• To have discipline is to be able to
control yourself and follow the rules.

• Good Nigerian citizens always obey

the law.
Patriotism
• Patriotism is when citizens love
their country very much and are
proud of it.

• Patriotic Nigerians support and

show respect to everything
Nigerian.

• Patriotic Nigerians do not say

bad things about their country.
Religious tolerance
Religious tolerance is when we accept and live in peace with
people who practice religions different from ours.

We do not force others to join our religion.

We do not stop being friends with others because they do not belong
to our religion.
Why are national values important?
• Imagine there was no discipline or
laws in the country.
What would the country be like?
Sharing national values makes our country more united
and a better place to live in.

Nigerians will be able to live in peace with one another.

We will also be able to enjoy our rights.
Like the right to be free and the right to be safe
