READING
10 Przeczytaj cztery teksty (1–4) oraz zdania ich dotyczące (A–F). Do każdego zdania dopasuj właściwy
tekst. Uwaga: dwa zdania nie pasują do żadnego tekstu.
1 Jason
I’ve been in the job since I turned twenty – that’s a long time, but I don’t regret it. In fact, I love it!
I don’t think there is a particular type of person, but I’d say they need to be reliable and sociable. Getting along
with your workmates is very important because the job is so dangerous. We often take part in team building
activities because teamwork is crucial in the operations we perform. Oh, and we are determined to keep fit
and healthy. You need to be able to move quickly sometimes or carry heavy things. We run into burning
or damaged buildings, we are there to deal with natural disasters such as floods and hurricanes, we rescue
victims from various situations. So excellent physical shape is absolutely necessary to do the job efficiently.

2 Chris
I’m the station manager, I supervise the firefighters’ activities at our station. I’ve been in the job for too long
now! For me, I’d say that a firefighter needs to be hard-working and really dedicated. Too many of the people
starting the job have high expectations, they just want to be promoted quickly and paid well. They are
impatient and they get disappointed quickly. As a firefighter, you need to be ready to risk your own life to save
others, and I’m not sure that all of our new staff are courageous like that. And I don’t think they are motivated
enough to learn new technical skills.

3 Alex
I was a nurse but decided to change my career after ten years. I wanted to do something more exciting
and exceptional – only 4 percent of all firefighters are female. That’s too few! People need us. We are there to
show patience and warmth for sick or injured victims. Just like a nurse but in more difficult circumstances.
Another important quality is the ability to remain calm and confident under pressure. You must be able
to make quick and smart decisions in an emergency. You also need to be able to follow instructions – there’s
no time to explain twice during a fire as it is often a race against time.

4 Michael
I’ve worked as a firefighter for three months now. I think the best advice I got when I started was to take the
job seriously – you need to be sensible about things – and to remain positive, even when things start to go
wrong. It’s a tough job, and it’s easy to feel stressed. Saving someone’s life is a huge responsibility and often
you don’t have time to think twice. In order to survive in this job, you must take care of your mental health and
you need to learn how to calm down and reduce your stress.

This person
A is not happy about the way new workers think about the job.
B has started the job recently.
C explains how to follow instructions.
D stresses the importance of collaboration among workers.
E used to work in a different profession.
F talks about the high expectations society has of firefighters.
