1) A t-shirt company charges less money per shirt when more shirts are ordered. The function below
shows the costs where x is the number of t-shirts ordered.
14𝑥, 0 < 𝑥 ≤ 20
𝑓(𝑥) = {12.5𝑥, 20 < 𝑥 ≤ 65
11𝑥, 𝑥 > 65

a) If a club needs to order 48 shirts, how much will they cost in total?
b) How much will each t-shirt cost if a club has 19 members?
c) Northside High School will be buying 150 shirts for a fundraiser. If their goal is to make a $600
profit, how much should they sell each shirt?

2) Chloe has a summer job that pays a time and a half for any hours she works over 40 hours. Her normal
hourly wage is $9 per hour. Write a piecewise function modeling her weekly pay, P, in terms of the
number of hours, h, she works. How much will she get paid if she works 36 hours? 44 hours?

3) Shein has the following shipping prices: $8 for purchases up to $30, $11 for purchases over $30 but
below $75, and $15 for purchases $75 and more. Shipping is charged before any other discounts are
applied. If you spend over $75, you receive 20% off while you receive 10% off if you spend over $30
but below $75, you receive 10% off. 𝑆(𝑐) below illustrates the total cost of your order with shipping
added in.
𝑐 + 8, 0 < 𝑐 ≤ 30
𝑆(𝑐) = {. 9𝑐 + 11, 30 < 𝑐 < 75
. 8𝑐 + 15, 𝑐 ≥ 75

a) How much does a $30 purchase with shipping and any qualifying discounts cost?
b) How much does a $45 purchase with shipping and any qualifying discounts cost?
c) How much does a $90 purchase with shipping and any qualifying discounts cost?

4) A rental house on Airbnb rents for $150 per night for the first 4 nights, then $120 per night for the next 3
nights, and then $90 a night for each remaining night. The total cost, C, is a function of the number of x
nights that guests stay. Write a piecewise function for this scenario. How much is a 5-night stay? 8-
night stay?

5) Shell is having a promotion. If you buy 10 gallons or less, each gallon is $3.15. If you buy more than 10
gallons of gas, it costs $2.95 per gallon. Your gas tank can hold 18 gallons.
a) Write a rule the models this function.
b) What is the domain and range of this piecewise function?
c) How much will you pay for 14 gallons?

6) Food Lion has a discount on family packs of chicken. The cost per pound of chicken is modeled by the
function below.
3.39𝑤, 0 < 𝑤 < 4
𝐶(𝑤) = {
2.89𝑤, 4≤𝑤≤7

a) How much would 4 pounds of chicken cost?

b) How much would 2.2 pounds of chicken cost?
c) If Quay spent $17.58 on chicken, how many pounds did he buy?

7) Over a 12-hour span, a snowstorm hits upper Michigan. For the first 3 hours, it snows at a rate of 2
inches per hour and then the storm picks up for the next 5 hours, snowing at a rate of 4 inches per
hour. For the final 4 hours, the snowstorm slows down and it snows at a rate of 1.5 inches per hour.
a) Write a piecewise function that models the snow accumulation in which t is the number of hours that
have passed since the storm started.
b) How much snow was on the ground after 7 hours?
c) What is the domain and range of the piecewise function?

8) Income tax is assessed using the function below in which x is the amount of income someone makes
each year and 𝑇(𝑥) is the amount of taxes owed.
0, 𝑖𝑓 0 ≤ 𝑥 ≤ 12000
. 17𝑥, 𝑖𝑓 12000 < 𝑥 ≤ 28000
𝑇(𝑥) = {
0.2𝑥, 𝑖𝑓 28000 < 𝑥 ≤ 50000
. 26𝑥, 𝑖𝑓 𝑥 > 50000

a) If Jessica made $38000 last year, how much will she pay in income taxes?
b) Crystal made $48000 last year while her friend Amelia made $56000. How much more did Amelia
pay in taxes than Crystal?
c) Nate made $28000 in 2021. How much did he pay in income taxes?
d) In 2022, Nate made $500 more than he did in 2021. How much did he pay in income taxes?
Compare this to the amount of taxes he owed in 2021.

Challenge: What amount of money would Nate have to make in the third tax bracket for his take
home pay to be more than when he was in the second tax bracket?
