at Fresh Kills on Staten Island in
New York City. Eight million people live in New York City, and they

produce a similarly large amount of waste. In the second half of the 20th century, all that
waste was sent to just one place – Fresh Kills. Between 1955 and 2001, hundreds of trucks

residential waste from the city to Fresh Kills every month. It
held approximately 150 million tons of solid waste and was among the largest man-made
structures in the history of the world! No plants 5 at Fresh
Kills – it was too polluted. And nobody could live near the place either – the smell was awful.
Eventually, New York City authorities closed the site. They wanted to reduce the city’s

by stopping the release of greenhouse gases from Fresh Kills.
Today, a massive park is being built on the site, parts of which have already opened, although
most of it won’t be ready until the 2030s. The legacy of Fresh Kills will be a green park with
clean air.
