Intro to Management
1. One of the topics covered in team exercises that was really interesting and impactful in helping
me better understand management concepts was the new product and service ideas alongside
national expansion. This was one of the topics to stick out to me as we hadn’t really considered
expanding nationally, being a business catered to operating at Rutgers, but it was interesting to
hear everyone’s opinions about it and how we can bring expansion to the company. Coming up
with new ideas was also fun and interesting because once again, it invoked thought and creativity
when working on it along. When discussing our ideas together, we didn’t have many of the same
ideas, rather they were all relatively unique and gave our thinking behind the birth of these ideas.
2. I believe that we had very engaging discussions and interactions when reaching a consensus on
the worksheets prepared. Everyone participated in the exercises and it was nice to see that we
quickly became friends, allowing conversations to flow more smoothly which allowed everyone
to give their input. We always had productive discussions and had each member share their
individual worksheet before coming to a consensus, whether it be only using one idea or a
combination of a few. We honestly did not have many disagreements, but I can recall one where
we were torn on the name of the brand and it was split evenly. We eventually decided on going
with the current name and using another member’s logo, as the name was more catchy to most of
us while the chosen logo looked more appealing. While not a proper disagreement, we took
everyone’s opinion into consideration and negotiated on an outcome that everyone was happy
with.
3. I feel our team project presentation turned out great, as we had great points to talk about as well
as visually appealing visuals. We ensured to stay professional while designing a theme that wasn’t
the traditional sentences and bullet points everyone is used to, yet making it more unique at the
same time. It also flows very well, looking like it was created by one individual with a consistent
stly and format as opposed to five people with each slide having a different style. We approached
creating the final presentation by using what we’ve learned in class and the team worksheets as
references for each point that was required to be expanded upon. We then assigned 3-4 slides for
each member to work on, that way when it comes time to present we will know what to talk about
in great detail. Of course, we ensured to look over the rest of the slides and provide feedback
when necessary. This approach was effective as it made constructing the powerpoint much easier
as we had everyone help each other when needed while using past assignments to help us get our
points across better. It turned out to be very efficient as we finished the presentation within a class
period with a few additional adjustments made on our own time. If I were to do the project over
again with improvements, I would ensure to communicate everyone’s roles a bit more clearly, as
one of our members was absent the day we began working on the project in class. Because of this,
we were unable to clarify the roles each member had due to there being a couple of extra slides
we needed to incorporate while our member was absent. Even though we resolved this in the end
by the end of class, it would have been nice not to need to worry about that.
4. Based on interactions with my team members, I believe my style of management would be a more
relaxed one that still ensures to be strict when things need to be done. Based on the different
leadership styles, I believe I fall in between a mix of charismatic and servant leadership. When I
was the CEO, I was still personable with my teammates and treated them with respect. However,
I ensured they knew their responsibilities and supported them in any way I could if something
was misunderstood or miscommunicated. Alongside this, some skills I believe I gained from this
course was learning to manage with purpose and the company goals in mind rather than just to
please employees. One of the most important things I learned from this course is as a manager,
you can’t just manage through a punishment and reward system, there needs to be balance and
development of relationships. Incentivizing good behavior is great, but employees need more than
just good benefits to truly help reach company goals. This is why getting close to employees and
encouraging them to come to you as a manager when needed will get the most out of them.
5. There isn’t much I’d change about the team exercises and project, however I believe that
assigning slightly different exercises to each member of the group while still keeping the same
learning objectives would be beneficial. This is because there were quite a few exercises where
everyone had the same opinions or ideas regarding a topic just because there would be a clear
answer for them. Some examples included the SIPOC chart and the designing jobs exercise.
Maybe for the future it would be better to assign slightly different exercises to each individual to
get a broader exposure to management practices while mitigating the amount of similar ideas
given on the exercises. This would also make it more interesting from a learning standpoint as it
gives incentive for whoever did that exercise to learn the specific topic better and teach it to the
rest of the group for their own exercise.
6. I would include optional quizzes in the textbook to use as practice for the actual quizzes we have
in class as well as better preparation for the exams. I think by having these, we can learn the
format of the quizzes better and have general practice questions at our disposal whenever we
please to understand the material a bit better as well. If added, the video lectures could also
provide answers as well as explanations for the answers to the quiz questions.
